Everyone has his own prefferences. No need to attacking other peoples martial arts choices. A martial arts flamming war is the least this forum needs.

Shure, why shouldn't nords be superagressive with their hands! :D I think kicking on the enemies legs to break his knee is very Nordish... And IMO chocking and eye gauging could be a perfect way to end a fight... or even make the PC use its helmet to smash the oponents head as a fatality... Headbutting could be a way to avoid getting choked.

I suppose throwing and disarming would be somesort of the same: an enemy tries to hit you with his/her weapon and you throw him over your shoulder and you grab their sword while doing so... (or even bend their arm forcing the sword between his own ribs :D) something like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1gtmRq5WxQ would do

Personally i really think most martial arts are completely rubbish. There's a few videos about two different types of martial arts fighting against eachother and it's always the same type of combat that wins: the not so complicated one lol. in one of these videos a guy using kung fy fights a guy using jiu jitsu (or however you spell those things) and the jiu jitsu guy basically just tackles the other guy using his entire weight to drop him. Once he's down the jiu jitsu guy pwns him.

Martial arts work well in movies and in areas where the fighting has rules, but if you can use and do whatever you want those fancy martial arts are all completely worthless and it all comes down to strength and stamina. Therefore it would fail in Skyrim because it will ruin immersion unless you really believe that those fancy martial arts are useful.

So, you think martial arts are worthless, you saw videos of martial arts fighting, and don't like martial arts moves in games?

please to meet you. I dislike echonomics conventions, I enjoy eating spagetti and I don't like too much gore in games.

iv done taekwando and it was the martial art i was with the longest excluding kick boxing when i was little, so many bad habbits and non useful moves. and many of the kung fu styles are... more dancing than practical.

muay thai, karate, jujitsu are the things ive done that would be good to copy

or bethesda could just copy the MMA guys...

what about Jeet-kung-do? I guess it's basically the same as what some of the MMA guys do.

They should practice no style as style. they should be like water... if you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup, if you put water in a bowl, it becomes the bowl, water can crash powerfully or flow gently, Water can take any form. Be water... my friend.

You must understand that this is a game with a lot of melee fighing and so a great ammount of players are martial artists. If various tae-kwon-do or kung fu/wushu style practitioners should have your same opinion, they shouldn't practice those styles. So they have different (strong) opinions than yours. If you speak ill of those stiles, many people may try to deffend them in a too pasionate way.

Despite having some rules, MMA is the best example of "effective" martial arts. Not to mention Jeet-kune-do, and Chun Kuk Do. It's never about being fancy, there are just styles that have extra stuff.

But despite that, for TES, I think H2H needs to be fairly simple, brutal, and NOT be as effective as any other weapon. If someone in Skyrim punches a dragon to death, I will be so pissed at Bethesda.

We can't kick in first person because we don't have any legs. ;)

I think we will have this in future TES, but right now they are trying to find a fight <-> magic balance.

Btw, kicking and screaming hasn't been good in games since the move to 3D. ;)

But we have legs. They are invisible though, which makes kicking extremelly effective :P .

Bethesda has amazed me before though... I think the "fighting" portion of this game should have very many similarities to realistic fighting games if possible, just like how i think that the "stealth" portion of this game should have many similarities to good stealth games like Thief and Metal Gear Solid.

BTW, Metal Gear Solid 3 (not a fighting game) had a pretty nice CQC system for the PS2, involving kicks, counters, grabs, chokes, punches, and other stuff.

MGS 4 was pretty good too, almost identical if i remember correctly, but i felt it was a little better in 3 for some reason.

Probably because in MGS3 it was a lot stronger and easier to pull off than in MGS4, though it makes sense in the context of the game considering the protagonist is Big Boss (in MGS3).

A more indepth hand-to-hand would be good, especialy with some form of takedown or hold/throw. The way I see it, is with weapon combat you have choices on the style of weapon, blade, axe, blunt, one hand, two hand, sheild ect.
I would like to see perks that alter the way hand-to-hand works, maybe a series of perks giving you takedown/throwing moves, or a series that focuses on body hardening and pure striking force.

Could even make it branch out into different martial arts styles.

and something like the CQC in MGS would be awesome. >=D

I've never really tried much of hand to hand in TES but what I'd like to see are perks that give special moves. Maybe something like disarming or counters of some sort. I could live with that

The problem with hand to hand as a skill is it would result in 2 painless drop skills in combat.. Thats something on the edge of 15 or more perks that could go anywhere and still you would be a fully strong warrior.... Thats not balanced specialy if any of the remaining 4 skills are a painless drop skill.

They nuked the one panless drop skill magic had.. some might see conjuration as the other.... but that still leaves only 1 painless drop skill left and they need alchemy a skill thats not even in magic anymore...

If there is a hand to hand skill that means anouther skill elsewhere is going to be NEEDED. On top of 2 or so skills that already are needed outside combat skill set... thats alot of skills,

whats the deal with people calling kung fu impractical. you watch too many movies my friend :toughninja:

the mma styles are what is commonly accepted as practical martial arts, however thats a misconception, such arts are SPORTSMANLIKE and suit a caged environment with spectators and referees. but when you look at other martial arts, silat, juu jitsu, pancration, various forms of kung fu [ancient china was the hotbed of martial combat], wing chun [the last shaolin style] you soon see that there is a distinction in arts that are for sportsmanship and arts that are for lethal combat.

No kidding... wtf?

I could easily see it filling out the stealth skills by merging two lesser used skills like Speechcraft and Mercantile, Athletics and Acrobatics, or even Security and Sneak (I personally don't see the big deal in that. Sneak leveled slowly without grinding and you didn't need to level Security at all, adding lockpicking to Sneak could make it go a little faster.) I think any class that uses H2H is more likely to pull skills from the Stealth category anyways like Light Armor, Speechcraft, or Athletics.

As for perks this doesn't really take from other skills if it is already in. some perks were already dedicated to it. But if they add a skill, add some perks. I don't think anyone will mind the additional choices as long as they are balanced and fun.

Bah this is actualy quite hard to make simple...

There is a BASE warrior. Just as there is a base mage and a base rogue. They devs have that skill set already firmly in thier heads.

Making a spellsword involves dropping a base warrior skill for a base mage skill.

If there are 3 attack skills in combat.. that means the base warrior only has 4 skills. We might not like that. ALOT.

I would feel much safer if the base warrior had 5 combat skills.

kung fu realy is, you cant block punches by waving your arms up and down in front of you in a mesmerizing pattern, unless you memorize them enough

I wouldn't be surprised if H2H was cut entirely. It's pretty useless against non-NPC characters (animals usually have huge amounts of fatigue).

Kung Fu is impractical. It lacks in power and has far too much flair. MMA styles are far more effective, the only necessary difference between sports MMA and self-defense MMA is the lack of pressure point attacks (groin hits, neck strikes). Other than that MMA is a far more legitimate fighting style than the ones you mentioned. Maybe pressure point centered fighting styles such as the Taijutsu of Ninjutsu could be comparable or more effective but that is highly debatable.
