Water Hazard

No. But something else should dominate the waters... killerfishes or whatever.

Some lakes could have thermal vents making them safe to swim in.

The nord's should have a race trait that helps them, and potions to make sure other races aren't underpowered, (similar to Argonians in MW)

I'd be okay with this, but there should be a spell effect or a perk to prevent it. Nords could have that effect as a racial trait.

Cold damage in very cold water, yes, and more extreme the colder it gets... but having it also negated by cold resistance would also be good. ^^

Yes but as long as it would mean enchantments or spells could overcome it as well. I don't want to see a situation where water is deadly for the sake of being deadly to avoid any design that includes water exploration.

Well, I'd say it should rapidly drain your fatigue, and once your fatigue hits rock bottom, the PC is unable to keep afloat and drowns. At least that'll be what happens in real life. Grim, yeah, but it puts fear into someone as they watch their character grasp for air, unable to stay afloat, and dies a cold and silent death.

No, we'll just have to plan before we dive in the northern parts of Skyrim; like... we could plan to use a resist frost spell, or something like that.
Then we can still find nice Kraken :)

Couldn't vote on the poll. I think in most cases the answer should be "yes". Your character stays in freezing water without some sort of protection (magical or otherwise)? He or she dies!

There are some humanoid races which could possibly tolerate such conditions, though. I'd have to break out my dust-covered D&D manuals to remember which ones.

No, I don't think "water should hurt me". *Cold* should hurt me and factors could be temperatures (colder at night), wind chill factor, and if you're wet. There should also be geysirs and hot water springs around where you could warm up. Same as for using a campfire to get the blood flowing again. Effect would be linear reduction in agility and a nonlinear reduction in health. If you do something *stupid* you pay the price for it. But playing normally shouldn't have too adverse effects other than the need to heat up every now and again.

Perhaps a Hypothermia meter, much like the radiation poisoning of :fallout: , so it gradually builds all the time... Perhaps also(Probably not for Nords or Khajiits) if naked in a very cold region should add to the Hypothermia meter.

Maybe higher athletics should make water "penalties" smaller. But the potions and alteration spells idea is good.

This

It will effect races more so than others.

Meaning: instant death for the argonian players! I don't think that's going to happen, even though it would be realistic.

There was a Tomb Raider (I think it was TR3) that had a level where she was swimming in ice-cold water, and there was a hypothermia meter for Lara. This was on the first Playstation, so it's definitely possible on a PS3.

Seeing the flaw with my earlier post (i.e. argonians cannot drown), a hypothermia meter should take over. As it climbs, your character slows more and more down as it gets more and more severe. By the time it's full, if a person is in water, they'll be immobilized and sink, and if a person is on land, they'll stumble and occasionally fall over. In addition, your character will slowly lose health, meaning those in water are completely screwed, while those on land have a chance of making it. Being near a source of warmth causes it to decrease, and certain equipment can halt hypothermia or slow it down. Armor that is not insulated will either be a liability or do nothing, depending on the armor and clothing. Potions and spells can also be used as a way to combat it, and NPC will suggest you carry a few insulation potions, like how in Morrowind NPCs will suggest you carry intervention scrolls.

No! Have you ever heard of a polar bear swim? Up here in Canada we go swimming year round.

Forgot to mention nords are likely to have resistance to hypothermia, for obvious reasons.

I think it would be cool so long as not all water was like this. There could still be some cave water, or warmer lakes that are alright. Perhaps it would not hurt you until your in it for like 5-10 seconds, so you can tell if its cold before it just starts killing you.

didn't he say not all water? and there could be a bar that pops up to show you how much longer tell you start to freeze. kinda similar to when you go under water in oblivion.

also...

Environmental damage has been severely lacking in TES games so far, so I'm hoping that they include a lot more. Hypothermia would be obvious, and welcome - as it would make you pay more attention in the wilds, and especially when messing around near water. I'm assuming there will still be lava and steam, and it would be nice if steam damage were implemented as well.

I'd also include blizzards, to discourage you from wandering around outside. In fact, it could be used as a plot element - where you are trapped in a village due to the weather. Wander too far away and freeze to death.

i think a blizzard is a really cool idea and would love to see things similar implemented. maybe they could add thunder storms and you have a chance to get stuck by lightning... increased chances if your wearing metal armor??

Does anyone think that staying in the freezing waters of Northern Skyrim should damage you over time? In the south the water could be fine (it would still be cold but it doesn't have to damage you). I mean, people die from cold water exposure all the time. Do you think this should be/is going to be implemented? Please explain your thinking.

Only if its in a hardcoe mode. To a casual gamer, that would be rather annoying and limit your exploration quite quickly. However if you have to worry about extreme temperatures in hardcoe mode, then yes, you should expect to have to avoid cold water. As you say, people die from hypothermia all the time. Why not game characters?
