Water Hazard

Post » Mon Dec 27, 2010 8:13 pm

Does anyone think that staying in the freezing waters of Northern Skyrim should damage you over time? In the south the water could be fine (it would still be cold but it doesn't have to damage you). I mean, people die from cold water exposure all the time. Do you think this should be/is going to be implemented? Please explain your thinking.

I certainly hope so. Nothing says epic manliness like dying of hypothermia.

This is one of those things I would love to be more realistic

Yeah, I think it should.

Getting wet should just not be something you want to do period unless you're prepared to deal with the cold, as it could kill you even after you're out of the water.

There should probably be some ways around it with alteration spells as well as potions though.

Yes casting spells or perhaps wearing some type of special clothing or armor should lessen or negate the harm from the cold water.

Yes, maybe Nords will take less damage from the water than other races would.

Environmental damage has been severely lacking in TES games so far, so I'm hoping that they include a lot more. Hypothermia would be obvious, and welcome - as it would make you pay more attention in the wilds, and especially when messing around near water. I'm assuming there will still be lava and steam, and it would be nice if steam damage were implemented as well.

I'd also include blizzards, to discourage you from wandering around outside. In fact, it could be used as a plot element - where you are trapped in a village due to the weather. Wander too far away and freeze to death.

Frankly, I was dissapointed that only standing on lava did damage in Morrowind. Standing in a steam vent did squat all - something modders are trying to address now.

Only if armor causes you to sick as well. Unless it's magically enhanced. Or you have massive strength. Or something. It's realism, you guys.

All seriousness aside, I doubt Skyrim will have nay sort of hypothermia or anything. It's just not the sort of thing most people would appreciate (ie: it's the kind of thing that would belong in a "hardcoe mode", of some sort).

Only in the far Northern sea. If it must be that is. Then the point of improving or even implementing sealife and seaherbs will be also gone if you can just die by going into the water. I feel it's in the North that most dangerous aquatic life should be situated. About the same time someone made a thread that dangers from the deep sea and sea life in general should be increased and that idea is very popular too. I can't see the point of it when you die before you get there.

It's a step, but I have something more elaborate in mind, which I'm not going to disclose, because I plan on making it someday. (mod)

Yes it should. I doubt they have anything like wet suits, dry suits, or hot water suits in the Elder Scrolls time period. If you're in the arctic water for too long your health should start to deteriorate and you should die. Fatigue should start going the second you get in, once it runs out your health should start to go until you die.

Considering I used to swim in lava in Oblivion and not take much damage I don't have high hopes they'll make cold water dangerous in Skyrim :P

What about adding a "other" or "yes, but..." option? Could you do that please?

Hypothermia probably not

Cold damage over time is more likely (along with damage to speed)

I think it would be cool so long as not all water was like this. There could still be some cave water, or warmer lakes that are alright. Perhaps it would not hurt you until your in it for like 5-10 seconds, so you can tell if its cold before it just starts killing you.

Alright. NO and you know why, although limiting it to the North like you say makes more sense.

except if your a nord since they are resistant....or at least give them a higher threshold.

i would like to see lots of changes with water in skyrim. first off no more swimming in full plate armor and also you drown if you encumbrance is over half of your total. i second the hypothermia thing, and i would like to see currents play in the game as well so that if you swimming upstream you move super slowly maybe even backwards if its a strong river. the swim speed needs to be drastically slower as well except for argonains who are naturally faster than everyone else.

I know everybody hates it (myself included) when people talk about things from Fallout 3 being in Skryim, but I think this is one of those time when it could apply. They could do it the way they did the radiation in Fallout 3, except a cold or hypothermia meter. I think it would make the game very interesting, and more immersive too.

Yes, but it should be a difference between cold water and freezing water. I want to go swimming without dying just from svimming. If I want to die on a normal swim I want to be attacked by some monster.
