I hope the moving water has accurate physics so I can toss watermelons down waterfalls.

I think uncharted had some of the best water in recent gaming history ( crysis' water looked awesome too, but was too clear in my opinion).

Take a look at this piece of gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3v80N_k9oA&feature=related

I think this scene isn't the best example, but further on there are some genuinely impressive whitewater parts...

Id prefer bethesda made SKyrim's water more like this, as opposed to a 2d animated texture...

edit: some better examples of uncharted's water:

Are you comparing Skyrim's water as a whole, or just the white water shot in the trailer? ...because neither of those examples is white water. The other water in the trailer is at least on par with the water in the Uncharted games.

There's no doubt the white water rapids are not as good as the surrounding visuals, and I immediately knew that when I saw the scene in the trailer for the first time. But it's not a big deal to me. The rest of the water, and the waterfalls in the trailer were very, very good.

It would be nice if Bethesda did some more tweaking to the rapids, but if they don't, we can live with it. They look decent.

The still water looks nice. But didn't you notice when he swerved under at about minute 1:10. That waterfall is not flowing or gushing, it's a paper thin model that had absolutely NO disruption when it poured on him. At 1:46 you can also see this paper thin model again on your left. In some places where the rapids were, it looked a little better but didn't give a full sense that it was rapids. The water should have been broken up by the ground and rocks more causing lots of white caps.

The body floating by at 3:27, I like that! :) I'm confidant that the end result in Skyrim will be just as good.

The water:

http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/morrowind_031502_013.jpg

It looked real in comparison to every game I have ever played (and that is a LOT of games) and it felt alive somewhat.

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcThyVxNavwu3LiMPKJdhuDShg5uJDbvTR7u0SxcNCmpcYbbkD88kA&t=1

It looked like complete fantasy not real like morrowind's....

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy297/b_harrison/skyrim/skyrim_gameplay_whitewater.jpg

It went from brilliant (Morrowind) to ehhh not so good (Oblivion) and now it is terrible (Skyrim)!

Though there are still 9 months to go so it could be re textured and hopefully they do because this isn't good at all.....though I will have to wait until the game comes out to see if they do change the water. and I seriously hope that Bethesda reads this post/thread.

How about Morrowind with MGE:

As long as modders can mess with it, I'll be happy. :)

Kinda off topic, but I thought I could show a few screenies of how far the OBGE team has come so far with replacing OB's water. We haven't seen the WATER (not rapids) in Skyrim at full focusing screenshot with good lighting.
We'll just have to wait and see...

Anyway, here's the OBGE screenies (not there isn't even a reflection map yet, yet it looks amazing :D):

The water from the trailer looked good to me, but they still have time to polish things up, so this may not be the final result...I know that at this stage the graphics are pretty much final or am I wrong?

Supposedly it does. This game actually has moving water and things move with it, including you. Same with weather. Weather affects your character.

I think... you're wrong.
I don't remember where I heard it. Could have been podcast or something.
But I vaguely remember a dev or Todd Howard saying that graphics and such would be improved even further later?
At least for the PC. It would make sense.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I could be wrong too.

No your right. Final touches to graphics go on last, just like icing on a cake.

@Mraz As for the water, the water looks gorgeous in game, the only water that doesn't look exceptional but still look good is the rapids.

Hell, I'm just glad there's flowing water. All the standing pools got old, and think of the mosquitoes.

As you probably already know, I strongly disagree about the rapids. I think the look terrible :P
The other water looks pretty good though, from what I've seen so far.

Despite the video being 720p it's still hard to see sometimes...
We would need a good view of the ocean at sunset to be able to tell fully about the water.

I was thinking about posting my (and Tomerk's) water here... Seems you've done it for me. :)

To clarify, Tomerk ported some of MGE's water shader code and textures... We don't have permission for the water textures (yet), so I created new normal maps, which you can see above. The issue is mine don't animate as well as MGE's... But I'm working on it.

Well looking at the ocean would only reveal what the ocean water looked like. We've already seen in Skyrim that the water looks differently depending on where it's implemented. The river water in the village is very different looking (and great looking even without full reflections that it will have on the PC) than the water in ponds or rapids. Besides your thinking of seeing full reflections on the water which you aren't going to get on the console, only on the PC. I'm going to say this just to make sure that you know but everything we have seen of Skyrim is the console and there are limits to the console, so no full reflections on the water and lesser lighting than on the PC (the console has great lighting so I'm hopeful on the PC version)

Yeah I know there are limitations. Good comparison is this CryEngine 3 vs CryEngine 2 video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WJG14uLA3k
Look at 1:37 showing the water differences. Pretty big I'd say ^^

You're comparing the wrong things, the animated water from the trailer is not the same as the normal water from Morrowind or Oblivion, and the normal Skyrim water looks much better.. http://neon.chem.bg.ac.rs/morrowind/atlas/vivec/palace/outside-2.jpg is Morrowind water too.

I hope the moving water has accurate physics so I can toss watermelons down waterfalls.

Or....toss myself?

I wouldn't expect it to be more than a bunch of animated statics.

its simply a bad texture, so long as the engine supports refractions we can get much better looking water
