Way to counteract bad tasting medicine

Post » Mon Nov 16, 2015 11:32 am

So I was recently diagnosed with diverticulitis(thankfully not a bad case), and my doctor prescribed me two different medications(both in pill form). The one leaves the most god-awful after-taste in my mouth for hours after I take it, and because I have to take it 4x a day the taste basically never leaves my mouth. I've tried several different types of drink(i'm on a liquid diet for 3 days) and popsicles, but nothing rids me of it.

Has anyone else here encountered a medication that does this, and if so did you find something that was capable of nullifying it, or at least temporarily overpower it?

Did you ask your md or people in the medical world, visit forums related to your disease? People having to take the same medicine would provide advice, I suppose.

Before taking the pill make sure you say that the pill tastes like chicken :liplick:

I have never taken any bad tasting medicine unless you cal Buckley's Cough Syrup as bad tasting. I actually like the taste compared to other syrups.

Put the pills on a spoon, pour honey into the spoon over the pills, swallow it all in one gulp. Honey makes the worst meds go down easy.

Gotta second this. If the taste is bad enough (or at least annoyingly persistent), your doctor might have recommendations or might even be able to prescribe another medication. If not, and if it is what I think it is, a google search with the name of the medicine and the words "bad taste" gives some reasonably consistent advice ("reasonably consistent" by internet standards, anyway).

Avoiding ALL nuts, seeds, and some small candies is your only other hope. It will svck to not have tomatoes, sausage, and other such foods again, but your other options are limited.

Looks like people read Starwulf post too fast. His/her problem is not about swallowing the pills because they taste awful; his/her problem is that the medicine leaves awful taste in his/her mouth hours on end, long after he/she has swallowed it.

This :) I don't have issues swallowing medicine, never have. I can take multiple pills in one go and not even flinch. For whatever reason though, after taking this pill(and let me tell ya, it only sits on my tongue for a split second) this awful taste starts coming up the back of my throat and then just sits in my mouth for hours. It's this odd...metallic + bitter floral taste(like I chewed on the leaves of a strawberry or something). I just need to find something that can counteract the taste, preferably liquid(I imagine once I can go back to a non-liquid diet I won't have as much issues, plenty of strong, overpowering foods out there).

I find that the trick is to swallow the tablet without letting it touch the tongue. I have my mouth partly full of water, place the pill between my lips and sort of let it fall into my mouth while simultaneously drinking more water while keeping my tongue pressed down while I let it all whoosh down the throat. It usually works but a lot depends on the size of the pill, the smaller the better. Takes practice too.

Again, I don't have issues taking the pill. And I don't think completely avoiding my tongue is going to solve the issue. The moment it starts to dissolve in my throat/esophagus/stomach/wherever it sends up a nasty taste up the back of my throat and into my mouth. Again, the taste is not coming from sitting on my tongue.

Ahh, sorry. I misunderstood. Having acid reflux I'm rather prone to unpleasant tastes coming back up, since you're on a liquid diet the stomach acid isn't having any solid food to work on so perhaps there's some reflux going on there. Have you tried using any liquid antacids? Here in the UK the major brand is known as Gaviscon, don't know what the US equivalent would be.

Hmm, that is a good idea. Mylanta and the sort are what we use here in the U.S.(or at least I think, I generally use Tums/Rolaids for acid reflux). Might have to make a quick trip into town to find some, might help. Thanks for the idea!

I have tablets i take, it leaves a chemical taste in my mouth about 30 minutes after it take it and lasts for 8 hours, there is no way to stop that its a side effect of the medication, even if i eat anything taste like it taste with a chemical aftertaste, if its a medication more than likely the only way to stop to take remove the taste is to not take the medication, but ti would be worth looking up a drug guide, or searching the net for the drug and see if its listed as an effect, its always worth having a drug guide if your going to start taking regular medications.

Yeah I did that as soon as I noticed the nasty taste, from what I've read it's quite common for the medication I'm taking. Unfortunately nothing I read had any mention of how to counteract it, which is why I posted here on the forums, hoping someone here would have had come across something similar throughout their life and know a way to get rid of it. This medication does the same thing you mentioned, no matter what I eat, the nasty taste slowly starts to overwhelm the flavor of whatever I'm drinking. I'm still holding out hope that once I can go back to solid foods I can find something flavorful or if barring that, spicy enough to overwhelm it.

On another note, 3 days of liquid is flipping awful. 1 day of liquids only when I had a colonoscopy done 2 years ago was bad enough. I'm halfway through my 2nd day now for this and it's a nightmare. I'm so hungry I'm pretty sure I could eat balut and be happy with it, LOL. I want to grab a bag of chips and just eat the whole thing, or fry up a dozen hamburgers and scarf them down one after another. Oh food, how I miss thee!

Have you tried any of the online suggestions for this particular medication? Sometimes things that seem like they shouldn't work end up actually working anyway - and often not for the reasons people think.

For example, one suggestion is to take in a small mouthful of a relatively "heavy" or strong-tasting liquid without swallowing (people have recommended anything from milk to orange gatorade), pop the pill into the liquid, immediately swallow in one gulp, and immediately chase it with more of the same liquid. The idea is to minimize the pill's contact with your tongue and esophagus, which might trigger the persistent aftertaste for some people.

No guarantee that it will work (different people have different susceptibilities to different side effects), but if you haven't tried it already, it might be worth a shot.

I had this problem with an antifungal I'm taking. Working on month 5 of the crud.

Turns out the pill almost instantly starts dissolving on contact with my mouth and throat.

Antacids might work(btw Gaviscon is available in the US) but something thick enough to keep the pill from touching the mouth and throat works best or me.

And chasing. God bless chasers.

You might try asking someone you know who's had chemotherapy treatment for cancer. Bad aftertastes are a very common side effect of chemo.

I believe the pill is leaving the taste in your mouth via the blood stream (not residual from the physical pill coming in contact with your tongue).
