Weapon Crafting and Improvements

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 7:11 pm

Who would like to see a crafting/improvement system similar to the one in used Skyrim, or does anyone prefer the Fallout 3 system where weapons and armor actually degrade and need to be repaired? Or perhaps even a combination of both.

I really hope weapons don't degrade as fast as they do in Fallout 3. I do think we will have weapon mods and possibly even the ability to modify armor.

I think weapon mods are going to be big. I also hope weapon maintenance is going to be in, but done in a way so it doesn't become a terrible chore. It would be awesome if you found a really sweet rifle, but if was in bad shape, and then you could fix it up to as-new condition with the proper skill and parts.

I think what we'll see is a combination of Skyrim's system and New Vegas's weapon mods system. Most of the gear we'll loot will be crap to begin with, but depending on our repair skill (or maybe it will change to be a Mechanic/Engineering skill) we'll be able to craft and attach different modifications to the weapons. Same goes for armor; imagine being able to armor your own vault suit, or piece together raider armor!

I think they'll use an upgrade system instead of equipment degradation, but if they do include maintenance I'm sure they'll overhaul it from how it worked in the last games. Like being able to repair equipment with scrap metal or craftable spare parts. Or even just being able to take them to a workbench and repair them there without another item.

It would be very cool if we could build and modify weapons out of parts (perhaps including scrap metal and other misc objects) rather than having to improve them. Same goes for Armor. I think that this could also be extended to fixing/modifying robots and machinery.

The weapon to the left of the garage on the fallout 4http://www.fallout4.com/ looks homemade, something like a hunting rifle stock and a jury-rigged laser system. Based on the guard it looks like the same gun 111 was carrying at the end of the trailer.

As for weapon degradation, I'm of mixed feelings. I don't think there's any way to make it anything other than busy-work, but it's still something I feel should be in the game in one form or another.

I have to agree with you here. Perhaps most weapons could maybe start off as "less than perfect" when we first find them in the wasteland, and we can then restore them to full working condition and maybe build or add scopes/silencers/grips etc. As for general repair, maybe weapons would become jammed or less effective only after a long time in use, rather than degrading over a short period of time as in F3. This way we wouldn't have to carry five of each weapon with us wherever we go, we could instead just keep a few spare parts at our home base.

Maybe they can incorporate something like weapon over-heating that damages a weapon only when we misuse it (or it literally takes damage, like when we target a gun in VATS), or more powerful "temporary" modifications that only last for so long. Imagine being able to attach an upgrade to our Laser Rifle that "overclocks" it, but eventually breaks down.

Crafting/Upgrades would be amazing.

But not like in Skyrim. Smithing/Enchanting was stupid OP. It had more weight than all other character systems combined.

The laser rifle in the garage has a RDS. So we might get a range of sights, grips, etc. That also means we'll probably have ADS.

I'm sure it'll be closer to FO3 than Skyrim.

That being said, weapons degraded far too quickly. Hopefully the do something about that.

I hope we get to name our weapons.

I'd like weapons to break down differently than they did in F3/FNV... It'd be nice if weapons don't fully break, but internal parts do. The barrel, if faulty can overheat after repeated use, fracture, and must be replaced.... The stock, can crack.... the firing pin can be worn down... A laser rifle/energy weapon can overload and cause all the electrical systems within to fry. So when parts do wear down, you either A replace them with a identical one, or add better parts to make the weapon better than it was...

No offence but in the end its a game, a way to have fun, not a engineering simulator or gun nerd fetish fuel, the previous games durability system is perfectly fine.
