No weapon degradation, no repairs needed

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 12:04 pm

I can't post pictures, but if you look at the pip boy showing the weapon menu, you will see that there is no weapon condition bar like previous games. So we have another skyrim "feature" being brought into fallout 4. IMO this is a huge step down, THIS IS A GAME SET IN A WASTELAND WHERE YOU SCAVENGE THINGS, YET EVERY WEAPON AND ARMOR PIECE IS IN PRISTINE CONDITION.

What this affects:

>Immersion

>In F:NV, Damaged weapons also affected accuracy, recoil, damage, and weapon jamming. If the weapon broke mid fight, would have to switch to another gun or melee.

> Repairing weapons was a monetary service the player can invest in, or they can learn to repair gear themselves and actually improve them beyond their limit (e.g. Oblivion repairing gear to 125%)

>It allows for player/enemy attacks that destroy equipment

We can very visibly see pieces of armor, both normal and powered, getting shot off during fights.

Even if its not item decay in the traditional sense, there is something similar to it in the game.

It could be only affecting power armor. That would make sense so you wouldn't be able to just wear power armor all the time. But no weapon degradation leaves a bad taste in my mouth

Like I said both normal AND powered armor is shown having pieces being taken off.

let's face it for what they showed everything is speculation (besides with the amounts of materials they had for everything it's safe to assume they had some form of god mode on so weapons may still degrade and just didn't for demo purposes )

Who knows? Maybe there will be weapon degradation, but without any indicators? Maybe we won't know our weapon is garbage until we take it out and realized our gun is jammed our our baseball bat is snapped in half?

If Skrim is anything to go by, that ain't going to happen. I just searched up to see if there was a degradation and repair mod on nexus, and there was one but it barely works.

The potential lack of weapon degradation in the post-apocalypse would be a bit of a quibble if it turns out to be the case, but I can understand why they'd leave it out. Newcomers might find it ... challenging tedious.

Let's hope there's a hardcoe mode and this is part of it.

Actually no... The series did not concern itself with item condition; that was an imported feature in FO3..

*No slight on other opinions, but personally I'm fine and prefer it without that. I would also prefer that certain skilled NPCs be the only outlet for mods and upgrades.
(As per the regular series. That meant they were important finds; and important to respect and/or protect. Algernon comes first to mind. The savant that would upgrade all sorts of weapons for free.)

Spoiler
He was hidden away under the weapon shop in New Reno; he did all their repairs, and they charged for it; but he'd do it for free if you let him.

*Just don't give him a heart attack, he seems able to die of fright.

I liked how NV handled it but hated how FO3 did it. There needs to be a fair threshold before penalties kick in, 99% condition having penalties was just stupid.

Meh.

On one hand, coming from the original Fallout games I didn't care much for the feature when it was introduced in Fallout 3, though I suppose it was cool to see extra animations for the reloading.

On the other hand, it made the Repair skill more relevant.

All in all, I won't miss it if it's gone.

well... plural does not imply a cut-off, but it was just to point out that the feature was an import as well... just as was implied of Skyrim, no?

I personally wouldn't mind the removal of item degradation.

The ultimate problem with it is that in order to correctly balance each and every item, to make sure it doesn't decay too fast or too slow, so it doesn't become OP/UP, it would require that the devs spend an unrealistic amount of time going through every single thing in the game with EVERY single weapon/armor, and doing more data crunching a super computer can handle, in order to create perfect decay rates for every single item in the game.

Unfortunately, that isn't possible, so we are left with a system where everything decays either too fast, or too slow, with no real consistency, logic, or balance, applied to it, resulting in the game being a mess.

Whats more, is that item degradation isn't even THAT big of a problem, as there's always some merchant you can go to to get it fixed fairly easily, or there's always some item you can fix it with using the repair skill, thus meaning item degradation never even really serves its actual purpose, to make the game harder, and incentivize taking the repair skill, while also not making it required to play the game.

Its simply broken, and doesn't ever achieve what its supposed to.

Doing something more akin to what Skyrim did, by lowering the base damage of most weapons, while still keeping them useable, and focusing more on IMPROVING them via crafting, creates a far less unbalanced situation for the player, and it manages to do what it was designed to more far more effectively, while still also achieving the same basic thing item degradation was intended to cause.

Not possible? Did you play NV? If I remember correctly, the more proficient you were at gun skill, the less the decay meter would reduce (too bad skills don't exist anymore).

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be hard to scale where the more powerful your weapon, the faster it decayed (which I think was in NV, don't quote me)

And item degradation did serve it's purpose, as stated in the OP. You either had money to repair it at a merchant, repair it yourself, or you're stuck with a broken weapon. This gave more vaule to money, your repair skill, and carrying more weapons.

also MUH IMMERSION

that was a durability spec in the part where you see them customizing the power armor, and beyond that just because we haven't seen something yet doesn't mean it is actually missing from the game. I wouldn't be certain of what is or isn't in until we either see that it actually is or they've confirmed that it isn't. all else is speculation.

I hope it's still in the game, this is still a survival game and having infinite weapons would make it way too easy. One Of My Favorite memories from Witcher 3 is exiting a Dungeon and finding that I'm nowhere near a travel point and I had to hoof it back to the nearest travel point with weapons at 50% durability all the while fearing that my weapon may break if I fight too many enemies. You can't do that in Skyrim and you certainly won't be able to have that in Fallout 4 if no item durability.

Another butterfly effect it had on Skyrim was that once you got a good weapon or armor, there was never any reason to try all the other weapons/armor you looted. Most of the low to mid tier stuff was simply skipped straight over and sold to merchants, or just not even bothered to pick up. It made the loot really boring.

In F4 it'll be useless except for selling and breakdown into base components.

It was a meh system to begin with. I would much rather see the ability to scrap down armor and weapon pieces for components for various uses. Either to upgrade existing armor and weapon models or any other creative uses.

I'd say the lack of condition meter on both the weapon and armor pip-boy screens is evidence enough. How else are we gonna compare condition between our identical weapons & armor?

Well, there was no weapon/armor degradation in the original Fallouts, and it worked just fine.

In short... according to the first few posts, weapon degrigation is stupid, unrealistic, and just shows gamesas's mishandling of the series, as nothing before it had the system.

Now people complain that it's gone.

Someone wanna post that Jackie Chan WTF meme? I'm on mobile here atm...
