Weapon Degradation in Survival mode?

Post » Thu Mar 03, 2016 8:06 pm

Weapon degradation isn't very realistic. Guns from WW1 that have been taken car of still work. Weapon jamming is more realistic, but that too could be irritating. I suppose if you had a weapon cleaning station, and emergency cleaning rags out in the wastes it could be viable.

Everyone wants the armor and weapons to be repairable at work benches and not magically on the fly in the middle of no where.

Myself included and I have wanted the armor and weapons degradation system to be added back since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim released for sale.

Weapon degradation is realistic.

Springs can break, wood if poorly made can crack and splinter or decay if left out for a long time in the environments, especially environments where it rains a lot the sun will even damage wood, poorly manufactured firearms the metal can crack, and there can be defects that happen from the factory.

In video games like Fallout 4 where you have all this junk that you can craft and make modifications for firearms they should be even worse than what is manufactured from a factory.

I never mentioned anything about the other Fallout games I specifically said FO3 because this was the first from Bethesda..

And this will not be "just another bar to watch" this will be a system that employs a new level of attention to detail.. If a weapon malfunctions in the field you will get a message saying that the weapon is malfunctioning and have to put it away and wait until you head back to a workbench to investigate the issue..

To investigate, you will enter a menu called "weapon repair". When you bring the menu up you will choose your weapon and you will see a list of the individual parts inside the weapon. For each part, which to keep it simple I'll make it 5 of them you will be able to check them.

Barrel

Receiver

Magazine

Spring

Hammer

You press your activate button to perform checks, and will simply get a message saying if its either "functional" or "broken".

Once you figure out what the problem part is, you remove it and replace it.

This whole process will take no longer than a minute but really makes you feel involved with your weapon.. Which adds to immersion. Just how we can take our Power Armor back and see what needs to be replaced or fixed..

The whole idea of this is that it enhances your experience while at settlements because you literally have things to do while at your settlement(base of operations).

Think of the settlement as a necessary base to replenish and restock before you enter the Brutal world that is the Wasteland.

Before Fallout 4 released for sale some pcgamer.com employees talked to Pete Hines and Todd Howard about if CND exists in Fallout 4.

Pete Hines said that Fallout 4 has some visual inspection where you can look at the armor and weapons to see how they look and Todd Howard said we will not get into those details yet.

Now Fallout 4 doesn't even have a armor and weapons degradation system only for Power Armor.

Does that visual inspection feature even exist?

I'm also wondering if CND will be added in a patch since Todd Howard said we will not get into those details yet.

Bethesda Game Studios has to be evaluating the armor and weapons degradation system for Fallout 4 how to make it work better. Otherwise Todd Howard wouldn't of said we will not get into those details yet.

You have to remember that this is a post apocalyptic world and is not a advanced society like we have today. While that old 1911 still works today from good care. Remember that it hasnt been under constant use for over 60 years, who ever owns it is taking good care of it..

But imagine a world with no manufacturer to call for a spare part. Or no gunsmith to fit or resize a barrel. No way to consistently get lubrication or cleaning materials.. This is Fallout...

A world that weapons are constantly being used and there is no customer service sort of speak... Your gun WILL get Dirty and Break eventually.. So the only way to keep them operational is scavenge parts from the same model weapons or, find the proper tools to fix the current one.

Yes Fail to Fire, Fail to Eject, Fail to Feed are real things to and I would love to see that on both the playable character and enemys in the game.

Imagine if a raider with a terribly maintained weapon trys to fire and all you hear is a click instead of a bang! These would add another level to realism and force the raider to drop his/her weapon and come at you with a melee weapon or run and hide, or try to take another raiders weapon..

So many unique experiences could come out of a mechanic like this!

That reminds me of another thing about the Fallout universe.

Oil the Earth is destroyed from the nuclear bombs exploding all over. Oil sitting in a cars engine or some other place for 200 years will coagulate, and be useless, and you will not be able to use it to lubricate the firearms parts.

Why would the player let it? Weapon degradation means the weapon slowly wears over time. Looking at your inventory you would see the condition of your weapon and would know well in advance that it would need to be repaired. Unless you are talking about having weapons fall apart at an absolutely preposterous rate or not degrading at all but rather spontaneously breaking out of the blue (which would be unacceptable) no player would let his weapon get close to break territory. Even assuming weapons were so ridiculously fragile that they went from fully repaired to broke in a measley 1000 shots, a player would know well in advance and have plenty of time to see to it's care before breakage ever became a danger.

At any rate, it's a moot point. It's not in, and I doubt very seriously it will be added by official channels.

How would the "player let it" if it would be rare and random. It seems your mind is still looking at this like a "video game meter" and this is not how it should be viewed. I already stated that if something breaks the player would need to go to a bench and investigate what is wrong with the weapon.

The way you are thinking about this is absolutely wrong.. You have your own conclusions in your head on how the system will work and are making statements based off of them. The notion of "looking at your inventory" to check the condition is not something that I stated, this is something that YOU stated.. "I" stated in a previous post that the player would need to go to a workbench for further inspection of the weapon..... This is because in real life if there is a problem internally in a weapon you would need to disassemble it, hence the need for the workbench...

But Based off of your post and tone, you have already dismissed this idea. Actually you might have dismissed this idea when you saw the title of this thread based of the past shortcomings of a system like this... So do we never advance and iterate due to a past failing(figuratively speaking)???

With that kind of thinking VR wouldnt be a thing today... Like I stated in another thread, one of the worst things in game development is a good idea that is poorly implemented... Because people like you form a bias against it and become closed minded...

Ideas dont work like that.. Ideas are created and then iterated until it is viable..

Also one thing I have noticed when it comes to people attempting at arguments is that they tend to talk in extremes... Using words like " Even assuming weapons were so ridiculously fragile" is a tactic used to try and make your point more attractive... The truth of the matter is that no one said that the rate of parts failure will be some ridiculous number, in fact both me and others agreed that it would be pretty rare for a part to flat out break. But inspecting your weapon at a workbench can be a preventative measure.. You may notice a small crack or gouge on a part, if the player chooses to neglect that it can grow into a problem..

But when using a weapon constantly in this setting, parts will break...

I could go into further detail, but if you are going to be closed minded then I wont bother... There is a lecture about creativity that I had to watch in my Game Design major from John Cleesehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qby0ed4aVpo you should watch it to get a better perspective on why being closed minded in game development is not a good thing.....

You were the one that used the term 'degradation' (the gradual diminishing of it's condition) rather than something like 'spontaneous breakage' and compared what you wanted to the system in Fallout 3 which did have a condition indicator when you looked at the weapon in your inventory.

Someone fiddled with making animations for it and when the CK kit comes out they thought about making a mod for this.

I used the word Degradation because it was something people would identify with since past Bethesda games had that system and did not mean it literally(that is what the OP) was for. But to be fair you are not a mind reader and in that regard, touche.

I could have been better with the execution of the title, but the real point of this thread is about doing a weapons degrading system "right"..

And I use the word degrading as a way to finesse the idea that these weapons will need to be maintained or they wont work properly or even break.. Its not the same thing as before but its similar enough to be in the same arena..

I like the idea of equipment degradation in theory, but in practice it just annoys me. I rarely keep items long enough to justify repairing them, unless I'm late in the game, at which point repairs would be trivial.

That looks incredible and so much better than the mod that a PC gamer made for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim where the blade tips break off.

The mod is buggy and he hasn't fixed it since 2012 and has the mod hidden.

Just from this gfycat video Bethesda Game Studios needs to officially add armor and weapons degradation back in Fallout 4 with animations.

Absolutely FANTASTIC! I really wish Bethesda see's this! Wow thats some great stuff man.

So using that animation as a reference..

- This could happen to either the player or the NPC.

- This is a result of not properly replacing or fixing a faulty part with a tool.

- The player or NPC throws the weapon on the ground in a frustrating manner, and either uses another weapon or pulls out a melee weapon or fist just like in the movies.

- After the fight the player can attempt to scavenge any parts that appear to be functional.

- Player can receive damage as a result of this malfunction, which furthers the need to inspect and maintain.

- Finally, THIS WILL ONLY HAPPEN DUE TO SEVERE NEGLECTION OF THEIR WEAPON OR PROLONGED FIRE

Sorry for the caps but I wanted to stress that in order for the weapon to get to that point it had to have been neglected for a long while. Or they have been in an extended firefight which is much longer than a normal firefight, the battle of BunkerHill comes to mind.

Again, thank you for the awesome illustration!

Edit: Alternative animations that are "signs" of weapon degrading could be.

- Player will notice that sometimes when they pull the trigger the weapon will fail to fire (Bad Firing Pin)

- Player can see a ammo shell stuck in their receiver as a failure to eject (Bad Charging Bolt)

- Player notices the weapon does not shoot straight anymore (Bad Barrel)

- Player notices the charging bolt does not fully move forward (Bad Receiver)

- Player puts in magazine but it does not slide in all the way (Bad Magazine)

These are all signs of bad parts, and all can have visual animations to indicate this. These are minor issues and the weapon will still function, just not consistently. These are all WARNINGS that your weapon needs maintenance but does not necessarily mean that it will explode soon after..

As long as you can use resources instead of other weapons to repair your guns, sure, why not. Can't say I'm a fan of the system though. Also, the damage must stay the same regardless of weapon condition. It's the gun in bad shape, not the bullet.

Apparently when Bethesda Game Studios releases the Creation Kit that PC gamer who is a modder is going to be making a mod out of this probably.

That's pretty tight. But like I aid, I'm OK with jamming, but the damage must stay the same. I like to stay in the wastes for a long time, and the last thing I want is my weapons getting weaker as it limits this time.

there is a lot more to do in fallout 4, having to loot supplies is a lot of work for settlement building and equiping settlers so that more than makes up for weapons repair as far busy work to do, i doubt they'll make weapons repair part of hardcoe mode, there's already a ton of stuff to do as it is.

How about Bethesda Game Studios develops the armor and weapons degradation system so that armor and weapons break much slower than they do in Fallout 3? Then you can be fighting the enemy NPC's more and only repair when you go back to a city or where ever.

Fallout 4 needs weapon degradation because it needs a reason to keep picking up weapons once you have a fully upgraded gun.

In fallout 3 I would leave my home in megaton with multiple weapons but sometimes I would have a weapon break, forcing me to pick up a weapon from an enemy I killed. This really adds to the surviving and scavenging feel that fits in well in fallout and would definitely fit in Survival mode.

Using junk to repair guns would make sense with better guns requiring rarer components.

it was an annoying pain in the ass that made a lot of the unique weapons useless in f3/nv. PA in F4 is garbage mainly because of its durability.
