Weapon enchantments not increasing by size of soul gem

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 8:08 pm

Hi there.

I'm playing around with the enchanting system for the first time, and I'm noticing that the stats on a weapon that I'm trying to enchant don't seem to change at all based on what size soul gem I use. The stats on a weapon that I enchant with a petty soul gem are exactly the same as one that I enchant with a greater or grand soul gem. Enchanting apparel seems to work properly, and the higher level soul gem I use on them, the higher the percentage of the bonus is. For weapons, though, each soul gem produces the exact same result.

Does it not matter what kind of soul gem you use while enchanting weapons? Or can I just not see a difference yet, since my skill is still so low? (Or, possibly, could it be some kind of bug?)

Thanks.

I think you are limited by the quality of the item you are enchanting.

Weapons have sliders. You can add 19 (arbitrary number, don't bash it) points of fire damage with a petty soul gem or black soul gem. The black soul gem will give you a lot more swings though.

Soul gem just lets it have more charges, you can make an iron dagger with 16 life absorb with a petty soul gem but it only has 3 charges/hits. Use a Grand with grand soul and it should goto around 30+.

Yeah, I had the slider turned all the way to the highest setting each time. My skill was in the low 30s, and regardless of whether I was using a petty or greater soul gem, any weapon I tried enchanting would have the same bonus (in this case, 9 absorb health) and the same number of charges (in this case, 24.)

I actually just went back a minute ago and tried it with a grand soul that I purchased from a nearby mage, (I only had petty, lesser, common, and greaters when I was trying before) and this time the number of charges DID go up to 36 for the same amount of damage. However, if I cancelled that and tried it again with any petty-greater gems, I would have 24 charges again.

Weird, isn't it? I'd imagine there should be at least SOME difference between petty and greater gems. I think it must be either some sort of bug, or maybe at low skill levels the difference is so small you just can't see it.

Ah well. Either way, it increased when I used a grand, so at least now know it's not COMPLETELY messed up. Thanks anyway!

If you don't have the gems all filled with petty souls, then you're probably experiencing some weird glitch. I know when I enchant, there's a significant difference between petty and common and common and grand.

It's possible that your higher grade soul gems were filled with less powerful souls. Double check them.

what souls did you have in the gems ? the soulgem's size only rates the most potent soul it can hold, the actual soul inside is what gives the power (for apparel) or number of charges (for weapons).

In Oblivion the filled soulgems you could buy weren't all holding souls suited to their size, I suppose Skyrim does the same. Maybe you've bought a common gem with a mere rat's soul inside.

Soul gems for weapon increase the amount of charges on the weapon not it's effect.
