just a quick question here: how come in FO1 2 and Tactics they used real guns but in FO3 they didnt, was it just because Bethesda made it, and now in NV it looks like they will use real guns , and Im guessing thats because it is Obsidian

Most likely they didn't want to buy the permission to use real names and had to use fake names.

Simple Beth was lazy. In an interview it's stated that the Devs of fallout 3 did not ask alot of questions (If any) to the makers of FO1,FO2, and Tactics. They really did not care about the past games they just wanted their vision of Fallout. It would not cost alot of money to have real world weapons names. Many companies I am guessing would pay Beth to do that.

I Have a feeling Beth did not know to many fallout fans were left from the original games. I am glad they are letting Obsidian do New Vegas.

Sorry if this comes off as bashing, fallout 3 is a great game it just could have been better.

Leaving out the weapon names is actually more fallouty than Fallout 2 was.

FO1 only named 1 weapon after a real world weapon - The Desert Eagle. Feel free to check if you like:
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_weapons

In the fallout Bibles, Chris Avalone refered to giving the weapons in FO2 a name as a mistake.

So by not naming the guns in FO3, if anything it could be argued that bethesda did listen to the fans, and the previous developers. Hardly proof of "lazyness".

Computer games usually fall within reach of fair use of copyright and trademark laws. Real reason behind dropping names was simpler, they don't fit into world as Fallouts setting has diverged from real world in 50's, nothing that has happened since that have happened exactly like it did happen in real world.

Simply due to the fact, that Bethesda didn't really want to be true to the original Fallout franchise, but instead went with their own interpretation. Unfortunately, this tends to be the case, when it comes to many franchise revivals(from franchises which have been dormant for several years).

Wait a minute though, to my knowledge, there aren't very many real guns in FO3. The R91 is the closest to a real gun, being based off of the G3/CETME, but even that isn't exactly the same.

The CAR is also AK-esque, but it's really a mishmash of lots of different guns. The 10mm pistol is sort of like a Desert Eagle with a bunch of doodads tacked on, the Sawn off could be any generic double barrel, the Combat shotgun is a bizarre shotgunized version of the PPSH, and the Sniper rifle is based off of the sniper rifles from the originals, though it is different. The Scoped .44 and the .32 could be any number of revolvers, but they both seem kind of like S&W revolvers. The Hunting Rifle looks like it was made in someone's basemant.

The only real gun that stands out definitively as a "real" gun is the Chinese pistol, being a Chinese Clone of the Mauser C96, though i don't recall them ever making one in any 10mm caliber. And that certainly wouldn't need any copyrights anyway.

How can it not be true to the franchise when 1) With the exception of one weapon Fallout 1 didn't do it (which Bethesda cited as their primary source) and 2) The Bibles describe real world weapon names as a mistake?

Sounds like simple unfair critisism of bethesda. If you don't like fallout 3, thats fine, but clearly this doesnt support any critisism.
