Weapon Range?

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 10:13 pm

What does range affect actually?

Seems if I put a long scope on any weapon, regardless of mods, that if I can get the target in my cross hairs I can hit it. So when a new muzzle says it drops the range from 191 to 175, does it matter? When is range even a factor? Is it only for what VATS will pick up? For example if the 'range' is 175 VATS will pick it up within 175, otherwise it won't, but you can still snipe father away with a good scope?

Thanks.

All guns have a damage drop off, it just is a really long distance and not that noticeable most of the time.

I am going to assume range affects accuracy when using VATS, but it should not have any affect when aiming with sights.

I am pretty sure it is just VATS pickup distance. When you are walking around clicking away on your VATS button to see if anyone is nearby, you can VATS lock onto stuff that is farther way. VATS percentages aren't affected, as far as I have noticed. Otherwise, I don't think it has any effect.

Maybe someone has done a test?

I was going to say that there is definitely a reduction in damage with range, though I can't quantify it. Back when I was still using the .50 sniper rifle with a recon scope, I could snipe the gunners on the overpass East of Sagus Ironworks. But what would have been 1-shot kills at normal ranges took 2 or 3 from that distance.

I must say that I do really appreciate that all the scopes we have automatically take bullet drop over range into account. It's very handy. ;)

Range definitely effects accuracy in VATS. All you have to do to see that is watch hit percentage climb as they come closer to you.

True, however, that is not what I (nor the OP I think) mean by range.

Range being the 'stat' of your weapon when you are looking at it in your pip boy. So that when you add a mod to a weapon that says... "reduced range" and you see the range stat go from say 135 to 120. What does this really mean?

Should be pretty easy to test. Get an enemy in sights, disable the whole world so they don't move, and switch between different variants of the same gun with different ranges.

I'll try it tonight if I can remember and report back.

I think the number is meters till the drop off starts like if a gun had a range of 100 and a damage of 100 it would do 80 damage at 125 meters and 60 damage at 150 meters but stay at 60 beond that so probibly a gradual drop off to a flat number like in BF4 and CoD

I have (I think) noticed damaged drop off as well due to range but my attempts as figuring this out have been unscientific at best. I try using short range weapons to determine this as it makes it a little easier to notice the drop in damage due to distance.

So, the invisible wall that bullets won't go through which is located out there at "range"?

it does affect VATS and it affects VATS accuracy, i use to use the short barrel assault rifle and the range is 100 give or take and i got an upgraded short barrel version from a supermutant and it still had a short barrel but the range was like 180 and i noticed in VATS the accuracy was a lot better, so it affects not just what VATS will pick up as fas as distance but the accuracy in VATS seems to be affected by the range of the weapon.

I think range is how effective the weapon will be in the range of the number listed of 0-whatever the range is of x weapon...not sure what the numbers mean (obviously a distance), but I have noticed with shotguns especially, if you are out of range, you may still get hits, but a lot less damage is dealt..I've also noticed it with some automatics, and pistols (non-explosive rounds)..and you'd have to assume in VATS it automatically reflects that as well...not so sure it has anything to do with accuracy in VATS, but could be wrong, I don't use VATS very often at all..

If any of that makes sense..

It is how far the bullets travel before despawning, this is most notable with the flame, as dropping the range from 50 to 20 absolutely destroys it's range. Otherwise the range stat is so excessive that no other ballistic weapon is notably effected, as most guns lose the ability to aim accurately at the distances to notice that the bullets aren't reaching the target.

grenades have strange behavior, when they reach their max range they stop, fall straight down, and explode

Not sure I can buy that. Like I said if I can find it in my sights I can kill it and I've sniped things I couldn't even see with my naked eye with all kinds of muzzles on. I know I was hitting things past 170+ in range with guns whose range was less.

Problem is that we don't know what the unit is for that number. Meters? Feet? Frankly either would be awfully short when compared to realistic ranges for these weapons - at least those that actually exist.

Well yeah, because the shotguns fire separate pellets that spread out pretty quickly as they move downrange. You may hit a target at mid-range with only a pellet or two out of the load, which is why you see a lot less damage dealt.

I hear you.

The only possible thing I can think of, was when I lived up on Finch Farm overpass where I was sniping some of the Super Mutants over at Revere Satellite Array. Seemed like when I zoomed in with my long scope on my hunting rifle, I could see the SMs popping into view (being drawing in by XBOX one). I could shoot one when he was on my side of the catwalk on one of the dishes, but as he moved up the metal stairs and as a result moved farther away from me due to the upward spiral of the stairs, I wasn't doing damage to him anymore and shortly after that XBOX one stopped drawing him in. For me that was some pretty extreme range; nothing like my normal "long range" shots. I recall, I was probably about lvl 50+ at the time, so I am sure my hunting rifle was fully tricked out.

I am still not convinced either, but I am probably leaning towards the wiki description. Also, VATS would not lock on at that distance.

We need a scope with a range finder, displaying the distance to target!

also, I have noticed that there is no Ballistic trajectory. Think that factors in here as well?

I'm not sure but would go with the Wiki thing. I once fired multiple shots at a target very far away and he did not even notice. Maybe I was beyond range.

Then I used the laser musket I found that I could not hit targets at extreme ranges even stuff like supermutants in the open. Gaus does not have this restriction because of longer range.

Range might affect accuracy in VAT, know that long range sniper weapons make it far easier to do headshot than combat rifles, but accuracy might have an larger effect here.

Oh yeah, bullets travel as straight as lasers and lasers travel at less than the speed of light. It's Science!

While the range thing might be an abstraction of ballistic trajectory, but if so it's a rather sloppy way of handling it. If the unit of distance is meters/yards, the .308 hunting rifle would be 20-25 inches lower than point of aim at its base range of 600 yards. That's a significant drop - like aim for the head hit the groin - but certainly possible if you know what you're doing. The game doesn't make us hold high or anything like that, though, so things like holding high and/or adjusting a scope for range could be said to be happening in the abstract and the range limit is the point where those abstract adjustments are beyond our characters' abilities.
