Weapon smithing might be a hype

Post » Fri Sep 17, 2010 7:23 am

Though we don't know for sure, I think the way weapon smithing will work is just like alchemy and workbench (in fallout), you gather ingredients (ore, such as iron, mithril, glass, ebony..., some wood that you get from wood cutting activity), and go to smithing station, select the type of weapon from a menu (dagger, short sword, mace, axe... etc) and click a button, and then you have a new weapon. Maybe the damage of the weapon depends on your smithing skill.

Originally I was hyped about the ability of creating your own weapon even if it's not a preloaded mesh in the game. Like creating a spear when spear is not in the game. But after thinking about the implementation I decided that it'll be too hard to do that.

So I guess the new weapon smithing feature is probably nothing new after all. So be prepared for the disappointment if you are hyped about it :)

We really don't know. I would like it if you could design the shape of the weapon, and considering what ore you use the color and damage. Just this would work great imo.

I was never really hyped about it in the first place, but at least they allow us to smith our own weapons, and PC players can already make their own weapons

I was thinking about the possibility of designing the shape of the weapon, but can't think of a way the game will let the player do that, it'll be like using 3d studio max to create a mesh for the weapon, which is way too complicated for a game.

I agree it will basically be a menu that consumes ingredients and outputs a generic weapon. At least thats what I think.
So I don't understand peoples hype over it.
Although this could still be good, I've been wanting at least this for a while.

True or you could have a bunch of shapes and make it that way sort of like the emblem system in Black Ops.

nah I really doubt they are gonna do that, I dont think that you will be able to create your own mesh, it would take way to long, but maybe you could chose from different parts, and I use blender

they should have told the media that you can only create generic weapons when they released the information about this feature. By not specifying that they are deliberately creating hype...

They give us a new way to obtain and create weapons in the game - for the first time - and people are disappointed that we might not be able to create non-standard weapons that aren't intended to be in the game at all? :sadvaultboy:

I was happy enough with being able to make wolf and ice armor in Bloodmoon. If this is at least that deep I'll be thrilled. The fact that it's being integrated from the start is enough to get me excited. What are people expecting? The ability to create your own unique weapons like an MMO or something?

I think I wouldn't want anything too sophisticated as it is. This isn't Runescape, I still make the most use that I can out of loot I find in dungeons anyway.

As far as customization goes, I think it would be cool if you could fashion the weapon in parts - like, say, the body, head, and haft. These could be created with different materials/modifiers that affected their stats, and then the three could be combined into a slightly more personalized weapon.

I really hope it comes with its own smithing animation so we can see our character hammer the iron into shape.

yeah, I can't see it as anything to get excited about. It's just one of those things they'll put on the box.

Although I suspect it'll just let players create a stock weapon, there are ways it could be more powerful which wouldn't be horrendously hard to implement.

Most simply, you could choose the colour and patterning of the weapon. That would simply be a matter of selecting a texture for it and (I think, but stand prepared to be corrected :)) a shader that is applied.

More complexity would allow you to build the weapon from component parts. So, if you were creating a longsword, you could choose from 3 different pommels, 3 different hilts, and 3 different blades. Then choose one of 3 or 4 patterns for each. The game would take a basic template for the blade (a sort of invisible skeleton) and create a new instance of that, with the right visible parts attached. I think in GECK/Nif terminology the component parts would be AddOnNodes, and the game would adjust the index for the node to point to the chosen visible part.

The differences would only be cosmetic, but at least your new sword, knife, club or whatever would look like yours :).

[edit]
Heh, ninja'd a bunch of times. But I waffled more :).

It would be great if you could design the individual parts of your weapon from presets, eg: pommel, grip, hilt, blade for a sword.

...And have a silver pommel with a daedric grip and an orchish hilt and a glass blade, then with gold dust or other metal powders you could change the colour or increase the weapons potential for enchantment.

I think you are the only one who thought you could do that.
Why would you even think smithing was going to work like that? Nothing pointed towards that level of detail you described, you just jumped to conclusions.

well, I was simply taking the words from GI. They said you can smith weapons but didn't specify it has to be a stock weapon.

They could just have a character creation system but for weapons. For example you start by selecting what type of weapon you want to make, then you are given a very basic weapon but you can adjust sliders to change weapon length, width, hilt length, material, shape of blade shape of hilt etc.
