Do weapons and armor degrade?

Post » Sun Jun 19, 2011 6:27 pm

According to the Playstation magazine, the old repairing system has been removed. Does this mean there is no more weapon and armor condition? We can look at the G4 demo, and we see no value for condition in the items. Also, there is no option in dialogue to ask a smith to repair your things, as seen in the G4 demo as well.

What do you guys think of this? Do weapons and armor never degrade, being in perfect condition after many battles? If this is the case, it's reducing the believability and immersion of gameplay. :(

Repair Hammers are gone (thank God) but your stuff still degrades. You either have to pay to get it fixed or learn armor smithing and fix it yourself.

No, they made it to where you have to go to a town to repair your weapons.

Weapon degradation, as well as many other "realistic" features should be optional. One more reason to have a hardcoe mode.

How do we know that? The mag said they removed the old repair system. And like I also said, there was no option in dialogue to request repair from the smith.

I remember one of the early magazines saying that, but I'm not sure if I believe it anymore. It could have been a mistranslation. The official Playstation mag seems quite clear.

uhhh... wasn't that the exact system in Oblivion? You either pay a smith or learn the armorer skill and use repair hammers to fix it yourself?

And didn't he just say he was concerned because he did not see an option for it while talking to the smith, and there not being visible item health?

I would presume that items don't degrade and thus don't need to be repaired. I would also presume that the reference to having to go to town to do things was to smithing - not repair. That is, you'll have to go into town and use a forge to upgrade items using the smithing skill. But I'm willing to bet, partly from the information we've managed to gather, but mostly just from the overall direction of the game, that durability and repairing are entirely gone.

Meh. At least there's mods.

I hope you need to repair stuff in towns only.

Doing a dungeon run has so much more meaning when you get out with cracked armor and a blunt sword than when you can swing out your 75 armourerskill repair hammer of infinity every time you want.

I haven't read the Playstation mag article, but if it said that they removed the old repair system, I would assume that they have added a new one in its place. If they removed it completely, why wouldn't they just say that they have removed repairing. The fact that the reference the "old" system usually means they have a "new" system to replace it.

It's possible, but it's just semantics. Besides, the other couple pieces of evidence from the G4 video point the other direction, unfortunately.

Remembered in Oblivion, after fighting dremora guard for 10 seconds, I lost like 25 points on my sword's condition.
That's just pathetic.

For me there was no immersion in the way Oblivion did it. It was just annoying having to fix it. Now if you could visibly see your armor degrading, that's immersion.

With the smithing skill you should have some ability to repair your own items.

Yeah, "playing the game" should be exclusive to hardcoe mode too!

Even more reduction of believability is that every weapon you find in the ruin is in 100% shape. I guess stopping to repair items interferes with the "FPS" feel that they appear to be going for....

There is no health value for items, so no, no degradation.
