Weapons - Reality vs. Fantasy

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:46 am

If you're wondering what I'm talking about, take a look at the 2 headed hammers and axes in TES games. They were large and clearly would be unwieldy and heavy - not something anyone could practically use in combat. Same could be said for some of the 2 handed swords and even some of the 1 handed were probably 2 hand sized.

Just for comparison here's what a battle axe and war hammer looked like -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Dane_Axe.JPG
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:War_hammer2.jpg

There was a fair amount of variation, but none that were used in combat came anywhere close to the massive 2 headed kind which were in Morrowind or Oblivion.

Of course, weapons in video games don't need to be realistic at all necessarily, but I know Skyrim is going for a more gritty feel, and would personally like to see them go for more realistic stuff. I can't deny that there's some fun and humor in beating things down with massive weapons though - I loved the Monster Hunter games I've played.

I hope Skyrim would have uniquely styled weapon shapes and behavior, more geared toward realistic.

I hope none of the weapons are exactly like their real life counterparts, in shapes and behavior, but they have a unique and persistent themes of their own, the Skyrim theme.

And I do not like the overly fantastic forms of WoW and Eastern RPGs.

well they said low-fantasy, so probably nothing too outlandish.

Magical weapons should have a more fantastical art style, but basic ones would be more realistic. The logic is that basic weapons require function over form, whereas magical ones can be form over function or form required for function (ie: runes).

Wow.. that warhammer svcks.

Honestly, I've liked the majority of the weapons from the previous elder scrolls games, and I'm sure they'll continue to make them with the same balance of reality and fantasy as they have been.

I want the weapon styles to remain how they are. I dont want a warhammer to be just a stick with a little nob on it.

This is what I want my warhammers to be like. http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/fms/Image.php?id=7846

I want freaking Stendaars Hammer sized hammers!

Or super sledge style/size from FO3

That warhammer does svck. But it is realistic. You know how hard it would be to wield a Steel Warhammer from Oblivion? If you missed you would probably dislocate part of your arm.

Well the weight in TES is a bit rediculous...

Aevar Stone Singers mace in Bloodmoon...90 pounds.

How do you swing a 90 pound mace with one arm???

^^ Very ineffectively

@ Badprenup

Oh absolutely, I'm not saying it isn't practical, I'm just saying it looks pathetic. It's a fantasy game, gotta make the weapons look interesting.

It's not stated to be in pounds silly, and it's not weight either. It's "encumberance." The in-game units of encumberance don't necessarily reflect any real weight, and are the number they are entirely for gameplay purposes.

I think Elderscrolls has done a decent job balancing realism with fantasy. A few of the warhammers and battle axes are unrealistic, but not extremely so.

Games like Final Fantasy and WoW come to mind, where the weapons tend to be larger than the characters themselves. In the Elderscrolls, the weapons "look" okay, as long as you don't think about it too much. What is unrealistic is when those massive weapons do almost no damage to a goblin who weighs less than them. But combat is the one area that will always be improved upon, game to game. As long as the weapon models don't get larger, I'll be happy. Now, if you want to talk about the realism of warhammers being more common than spears...

supposedly they are going for a darker grittier feeling so im hoping they are taking cues from the mount and blade games which have the best weapons selection to date. leave out the silly childish anime warhammers and bring in the weapons for advlts. the kids can always go play WoW if they want a warhammer that is twice as big as their head. do people skip physics classes on purpose or what? having a large warhead like that impedes balance and also slows down acceleration when you swing. after a certain point warhammers actually do less damage because you cant get them up to the same velocity as a lighter warhammer. factor in having to accelerat the weapon quickly in a melee fight and you would be toppling over with those cartoony weapons. this isnt WoW.

i want a weapon of war.........not something that i would see at a sci fi convention.

and no the "this is not earth, its nirn and the rules might not apply" excuse doesnt fly. their arrows are the same size as ours, their bows are the same size as ours, their swords are the same size along with their axes as ours. yet somehow apparently gravity has a completely different effect on objects depending entirely on whether or not they are sharp or blunt.

Hammers should look like this! http://s3.amazonaws.com/picable/2008/12/26/567613_Dan-Leaves-Hall-of-Heroes-With-New-Hammer_400.jpg

Just joking.

Wow.. that warhammer svcks.

Actually, it looks more painful to be hit by than any of the wide-surface area warhammers in Oblivion. Just needs to be decorated a bit. For Skyrim, I'd opt for a happy medium.

Yes the warhamers look stupid, one cool and realistic feature would be warhammer and axe combination, you have a axe head with a warhammer on the backside.
Main use was against heavy armored enemies where the axe would not penetrate armor.

Another strange thing is weight, if I make a sword with a material far superior to steel I would make it thinner and lighter, probably longer because it low weight let you handle a longer sword but mostly to reduce weight.

But as other says the weight reflect encumbrance and is also used for balancing.

Mainly realistic. I don't mind a *certain* yet subtle stylistic approach to some, but I really don't want anything utterly ridiculous.

Exactly.

For weight (actually, mass) values, you have to obviously look in the weapon's models, where the physics properties are defined.

Umbra, for example, has a mass of 10.0 (kg) in Oblivion.

Being awkard.
All styles, realistic and fantastic.
However looking at the artwork for the armour and outfits, I'd say we'll get unique new versions of old favourites.
Given a new design and placed firmly in the setting of Skyrim. so more akin to fantasy weapons.

I want realistic weapons, but not weapons that are copies of real weapons. The weapons should be from the TES world, but also realistic. Some magic and special weapons could have strange designs and be overly decorated because it fits.
A godly warhammer that's as huge as a man is possible in a mythical fantasy setting like TES, as long as that's not what a normal weapon is like.

I would prefer a fair amount of over the top weapons. Now the weapons would have to be Daedric or magical.

I like TES weapons to be realistic.
But some unique weapons could be slightly "different" ofcourse.
