weapons - 50 seems low; Only FO3 or also NV Weapons?

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 12:29 am

I would assume they are different base weapons.

Basically, it looked to me like the body/barrel determine the weapon type, while other parts adjust stats and add different effects.

So you will have things like "Auto laser pistol" "Marksman laser pistol" and so forth. Pretty much like borderlands as you say.

That's the point I'm making though. You can customize the weapons, but they'd end up assuming a different base.

The way I viewed it is there are several base laser weapons, but if you take the pistol and mod it enough, it will assume a different base (the rifle). So again, you can change the scopes, grips, etc., but it's not going to become a radically different weapon and still be the same base.

Edited for bold: I never claimed it was a bad thing

This is how I interpreted it. You can customize the weapons similar to New Vegas, but they're still the same weapons with just different stuff like grips, sights, etc.

Think about it.

There is a laser pistol.

That mods all the way from a laser rifle to a laser shotgun.

There is a 9mm pistol.

That mods all the way from an automatic assault rifle to a scoped 9mm rifle.

That is a lot of change.

50 base weapons would be better said as 50 ammo types minus whatever has been set aside for unarmed and melee. The Laser Pistol and Laser Rifle aren't separate anymore, just a base "laser" weapon. Same with 10mm, 5.56mm, plasma, .308, and so on.

We really don't know to be honest. It's all just guessing as is. I doubt the laser pistol and laser sniper will function the same way. And I don't think turning a laser pistol into a laser sniper would then count the laser sniper as one of the 50 base weapons.

No, thats 100% wrong. They showed you taking a laser pistol and turning it into a laser rifle, a laser machine gun, a laser sniper and a laser shotgun.

That is ontop of hundreds of little changed

I am still having visions of combining a few cranked Laser Muskets and a Minigun chassis

I am hoping We do not get too many junk Weapons like the Chinese Pistols in Fallout 3. I expect to have quite a few Uniques, Alien Blasters have to make a return, and My Favorite Weapon Firelance.

This might be a fair assumption. 10mm pistol then all it's variations, .308 hunting rifle and all of those, plasma and all that, etc. But the variations will have gameplay differences. A pistol doesn't act like a sniper or shotgun

I like that theory, but none of us KNOW enough about this (other than the 30 seconds of fast flipping video we all saw). Stating what you believe as fact does not make it fact.

I think worrying and gripping about this issue at this point is a waste of effort. When we learn something more (or the game releases) and you feel you have been short changed in the weapon department, then post a gripping thread here.

Umm.. So they turned one base weapon (laser pistol) into another base weapon from every other game (laser rifle), which is precisely what you just noted in your post, but it's wrong?

Okay, im going to break this down for you peeps.

There are 50 BASE weapons. and over 700 Mods.

Lets say that the loot tables and leveled lists of NPCs include randomly generated weapons that include a random weapon with up to 3 different random mods attached to it.

If you do the math, its safe to say that you probably wont come across the same weapon twice.

No, no they modded one base weapon (laser pistol) into a modded version of that same gun. Laser rifle. Laser shotgun, laser machine gun, laser sniper rifle are all modified versions of the 1 single base weapon (laser pistol)

They are all the same base weapon.

I see what's going on.

You don't consider each "core" a single base weapon? A laser pistol is a seperate base weapon than a laser rifle, even if the two share the same exact "laser core", differentiated only by a barrel length mod and grip mod?

It looks like they're following Dead Space 3's weapon crafting system to me, with a "core" weapon type, and mods that change it from a pistol to rifle, and barrels that fundimentally alter how the weapon plays. For instance, the Military Core can have a scattershot tip added, turning it into a shotgun, a precision tip that turns it into a sniper rifle, an atuomatic tip to turn it into an asault rifle, or the standard tip that turns it into a semiautomatic carbine.

What you misunderstood is that the laser pistol and the laser rifle are the same base weapons. I'm not sure which is the real base weapon, so lets just say the base is Laser.

Laser counts as 1 base weapon, and Laser Pistol, Laser Rifle, Laser Scattergun, Laser Sniper, are all modifications of that one single base weapon. They do not count as 4 seperate weapons towards the 50 base weapons mentioned, but as 1.

It really depends on what is considered a base weapon in this game. If for instance, the Laser Rifle is a base weapon and the Laser Sniper Rifle and Scattered Laser Rifle are modded variants of the base Laser Rifle, that means there is possibly a vast amount of weapons that can be obtained in the game.

I think the key to determining what is a base or modded weapon is to look at the wording of each weapon. If the name does not have some sort of adjective, then it is a base weapon (ex: Laser Rifle). Weapon titles with words such as Scattered, Focused, and Sniper would probably indicate that the weapon is a modded variant of a base weapon.

If I am predicting this correctly, the Laser Pistol and Laser Rifle are both individual base weapons which would indicate that a base weapon can be transformed into another base weapon. This would also mean that the Scattered Laser Rifle, Laser Sniper Rifle, and Focused Laser Rifle are all modded variants of the base Laser Rifle. If this is the case and if each modded variant of each base weapon has a distinct function and feel, then the total number of available weapons should provide much variety for players.

Here is a more defined example of what I am talking about:

Base Weapon: Laser Pistol

Modded Weapon Variants: Long Laser Pistol, Short Laser Pistol, Focused Laser Pistol

Base Weapon: Laser Rifle

Modded Weapon Variants: Laser Sniper Rifle, Scattered Laser Rifle, Automatic Laser Rifle, Focused Laser Rifle

Lets put it this way.

You have the base weapon archetype, Lasers.

Which can then be modified into any secondary archetype (pistol, rifle, shotgun) through mods.

I am kind of making an assumption here.

But i believe everything that a weapon can be modded into is part of the same base weapon. Like a family of sorts.

A laser rifle can become a laser pistol, same base weapon.

A laser rifle cannot become a plasma pistol, different base weapon.

Seems pretty good to me. Far Cry 4 had about 50 weapons.. not counting the specialized weapons which were simply modded versions of the other guns.

If you look at the gameplay from E3 concerning the weapon customization you can vividly see some examples of base weapons.

10mm pistol

Combat shotgun

Hunting rifle

Laser pistol

minigun

pipe pistol

Hope this gives you all some insight.

I am not so sure about that. The Laser Musket is also a laser weapon, but it has a drastically different appearance and operation from the Laser Pistol and Laser Rifle. It does not seem as if a Laser Pistol can become a Laser Musket, but I could be wrong. I would be willing to bet that the Laser Pistol, Laser Rifle, and Laser Musket are all different base weapons that can be reformed into many different weapons with varying performances.

I think the combat shotgun was actually a part of another base weapon. I think shotgun/scattergun is a modified version of a base weapon, much like rifle, pistol, sniper, thrower, etc

We dont know if the Laser Musket is in the same family as the Laser Rifle, and if it can be modded into other Laser weapons or that other laser weapons can be modded into a Laser Musket.

If they can i'd thinkthey are the same base weapon. I think base weapon encompasses all weapons that can be modded into eachother. As an example i gave, laser pistol can become a laser rifle as they are part of the same base weapon. A laser pistol cannot become a plasma pistol as they are two different base weapons.

That strikes me as a logical way to define a base weapon.

Adding elements like electricity goes beyond scopes, sights and grips/stocks. A 10mm SMG is not the same thing as an SMG that shoots electrified bullets. These types of mods are the ones that I find interesting and which will definitely take us out of base weapon territory.

Todd Howard said over 50 base weapons and over 700 modifications. So we don't know the exact number. I also don't think the laser rifle is a base weapon, just the laser pistol. The laser pistol is the (base) that you build off of to create the other weapons.

Precisely, as this is how they have been portrayed in all previous games, and they haven't said anything to the contrary. In fact, in the customization video Todd Howard even says something along the lines of, "You can take the laser pistol, one of the base weapons.."

Take New Vegas' weapons for example: In laser weapons there are the Pistol, Rifle, RCW and Gatling Laser, which have all been their own base weapon.

Unless you have some information that I haven't seen, then you can't possibly know that. It even contradicts stuff we've seen in every previous installment and what Todd said in the customization video.

See the above: Todd Howard himself, in the customization video that was released, said that the laser pistol is one of the base weapons in the game. This is also supported by previous games as well.
