Weapons that look Cool, and Weapons that look Awful

Post » Sat Dec 19, 2015 5:38 pm

What is your list?

I have seen several comments in other threads about how ugly some weapons are, to the extent that they are avoided because they are so hard to look at. This isn't really a damage or effectiveness topic, but rather as the title suggests, one about looks.

My list:

Cool:

Hunting Rifle - tricked out to full sniper - pistol grip not so much

.44 Mag Pistol - Dirty Harry - doesn't get much cooler than that.

Deliverer - My name is Bond, James Bond

10mm - Tricked with recon an silencer, so cool.

Mini-Gun - What's not to like

Submachine gun - Gansta, or WWII G.I., fantastic.

Gattling Laser - Don't know why you need gattling on a laser, but hey!

Institute - need more of these.

Laser Musket - New, different....

Awful:

Assault Rifle - looks absolutely ridiculous. WWI Biplane machine gun? Can't stand to look at it. Will never use it.

Plasma Rifle - looks like something a Barista might use, definitely not me.

Gauss Rifle - looks like a real one, but still ugly. FO3 and FONV versions looked cool.

Pipe Guns - C'mon.

Combat Rifle - I don't even know what this is supposed to be.

edit: put in spoiler section so any weapons can be discussed without ruining anything for others...

Cool
Pipe Weapons - Because survival isnt pretty
Gauss Rifle - It now looks as powerful as it is
Gamma Gun - it may be awful but it looks good regardless
Combat Shotgun - I missed it in NV so very much
Laser Weapons (including Gatling) - They look much sleeker than before
Hunting Rifle/Sniper Rifle - Making these weapons actually be the same weapon is odd but it works
Junk Jet - Huge improvement over the Rock-It Launcher
Shishkebab - It looks even cooler without the backpack
Extended Ripper - 1 step closer to a Chainsword
Deliverer - It looks as good as it kills
Grognak's Axe - Need i say more???
Laser Musket - It is interesting and powerful

Awful
Plasma Weapons - someone seriously thought making the rifle and pistol interchangeable was a good idea...
Flamer - It just looks awful...just awful
Curved Blade Ripper - I thought it was impossible to make the Ripper look like crap...i was wrong
Super Sledge - It is no longer intimidating to look at...although it does look more functional
Assault Rifle - Oh typo...supposed to be called LMG
Institute Weapons - Too blocky
Broadsider - It is literally a joke
Alien Blaster - Made it look like a Trekkie phaser and it svcks...

Assault Rifle is the best looking weapon in the game. Sadly I do not have a high enough level character yet to get one.

Mini-Gun looks great as well.

The other weapons for the most part alright.

The flamer will never look cool without a gas tank strapped to your back. In fact, I miss any weapon that included some sort of ammo pack on your back.

The institute rifle looks like a toy a seven year old would play with

-I would love the look of the hunting rifle if not for the ridiculous left handed design used exclusively by right handed characters.
-The assault rifle is atrocious.
-The pipe weapons range from 'meh' to 'laughably impractical'.
-The Institute weapons all look the same, and it seems completely unwieldy.

-I like most other energy weapons. The laser stuff especially.
-Various versions of the double barrel shotgun are nice.
-I know I'm in the minority, but I actually like the laser musket. It's like the poor man's laser rifle.

Overall I'm fairly "meh" about the weapons. The best designs are returning from previous games, but most of Fallout 4's original weapons look ridiculously impractical.

I'd definitely say the biggest casualties were the assault rifle and power fist. The assault rifle is beyond absurd in its design and I can never see it as a legitimate weapon the US used pre-war. Power fist just looks like some construction site tool this time around, over its previously cool design.

I'd say the Plasma weapons at least look a little better than their Fallout 3 versions, but I still miss the original looks. At the very least they could have used the compacted design of the plasma rifle from Fallout Tactics.

Everything else I like or don't mind. For some reason, I kind of like the new gauss rifle look.

The winner for ugliest would be this pipe revolver I found with an attached bayonet.

Cool:

.308 marksman sniper rifle. I wasn't a fan of the open design stock initially, but throw in a long range tracking scope, and this is one sweet weapon.

10mm. I'm extremely disappointed this game didn't have my 10mm SMG, but the one I'm carrying offers 15 fire damage along with a 24 mag. It's my sweeper as I can easily take down most enemies with it. I also have one that does 25 points radiation damage, but I don't use it. Too many enemies love radiation.

Combat shotgun. From FO3, to FONV, and now FO4, this is my clean-up weapon. 32 rounds in a drum with ultra damage, and I'm kicking over 380 damage. Mirelurk Queens are no problem. Come to think of it, nothing stands up to this. Picked up one that adds 25 damage of plasma along with base. Oh yeah!

Laser Sniper rifle with unlimited ammo. Long range one-shot killer. I replaced my .308 sniper with this one simply because there's nothing better than taking out enemies from rooftops without having to reload.

On-the-fence:

Gauss rifle with unlimited ammo. For damage which doesn't include explosives, this is the strongest weapon in my arsenal. At over 500 damage, it definitely makes quick work. Unfortunately, the fire rate is a bit too slow for my taste and the weight makes it a burden to carry. I'll probably put it into my safe the next time I make it home.

Awful:

Plasma weapons. Take aim, get ready to fire, and.... half the screen is blocked out. Pass.

"Wasteland" weapons: yeah, all that junk Raiders carry is only good early one for scrap.

Two-handed weapons (non-rifle). Too big. Too slow. Too little damage. These are best suited mounted to power armor or vertibirds.

it didn't have nearly the range (which didn't matter because Obsidian was smart enough to add other ammo types) and it was clearly a different model, therefore not the same

Personally I really like the look of the combat rifle. Especially once it's fully modded with the best stock and everything.

The assault rifle is the one that kills me. It looks like I ripped a level 1 water pump out of the ground and converted it into a gun. It looks absolutely terrible.

Awesome and cool:

- Institute pistol and rifle. I just like the colourful design and the fact it shoots a blue laser. What I can say, im a man of simple tastes.

- Hunting Rifle. Always a fan of these. It also reminds me of level-action rifle for some reason which was my favourite weapon in F3

- Laser Rifle- The basic rifle is average, but with mods it can look really cool

- Double barreled shotgun aka saw off shotgun- Another relatively old weapon im a fan off. Great for historic/victorian witchhunter style roleplay.

- Chinese officer sword/revolutionary sword. Swords are always cool, no argument there.

- Gauss Rifle. Massive, powerful, and ultra-badass. No further argument needed

- 10mm pistol- The base is nice, but the advanced/suppressor is where it shines.

- 44. subnosed/Kellog's- Oh dear, this thing looks and feels like a powerhouse. The Bull barrel is an absolute beast and a must.

- Grognak's Axe - As a poster already said, it's a [censored] axe.

Average

- Super Sledge- Starts okayish as a normal hammer, but the heated mod makes it look silly imo

- Combat rifle- Okayish. Nothing special

- Assault rifle- Reminds me of a something an ork would mount on his buggy/wartruk. The Ammo drum and scope mods make it look cooler tho

- Most melee weapons

- Pipe Weapons. Can be great if you're into steampunk and what not, otherwise can be a terrible nuisance and insult for eyes.

- Rocket Launcher. Neither like it, or dislike it. Standard stuff

- Submachine/Chicago typewriter- Kinda boring, but okayish.

- Minigun- Minigun as minigun. Standard stuff

Bad and forgetful

- Plasma weaponary- Strong as always, but the design is terrible. Could look much better.

- Fat Man- Oh god. This thing, i despised it ever since F3. Totally unnecessary, ugly, and stupidly overrated

- Combat Shotgun. Don't like it. Looks too standard and was never a fan of automatic shotguns

- Shiskebab. The mini valve at the base of it looks terrible.

- Flamer- Looks generic and boring. Also no gas canister on the back

- Alien Blaster- Looks like a 50's kid's toy.

- Broadsider- Not as cool as you'd think

- Laser Musket- Would have been a better concept if it were an actual normal musket.

Absolutely atrocious

- Gamma gun. The hell is this thing? THE HELL IS THIS THING? How did this.... how was this even a concept???????

- Junk Jet- Yeah i get it this is basically a joke weapon, but WTF.

I think the Assault Rifle looks cool. There, I said it. I feel better. It's big and honking and totally unrealistic, but I like it - if it weren't for all the complaints about it I would have thought nothing of it. I think the only thing I don't like about the Pipe weapons is the color scheme. Some of the mods look really cool, and I can dig the scrap chic, but that green I think isn't so hot. I do love the look of the Pipe Revolver with the Sharpshooter's Grip, Long Light Barrel, and Compensator though.

I was never a huge fan of Bethesda's design for the Plasma weapons, but they're a little better in this game than in 3. I just wish there was a sleeker plasma alternative - the current model is perfect for mad scientist type characters that build doomsday devices in their old ruined mansion, but it doesn't really look like cutting edge tech made by highly skilled engineers for military use, you know?

Laser musket is awesome. That red glowing ilumination is ominous and threatening.

I agree with those thinking that most energy weapon svck though, they all look like objects resembling guns for the kids to play, like a hair dryer and stuff.

Leaser musket is cool, like the glow and the charge function, a poor mans gauss rifle.

I actually am quite fond of the pipe weapons, especially when playing a more rogue / raider character.

one of my favorite guns in the entire game is a 45 pipe revolver (marksman handle, second to last barrel, the finned one is silly.)

I don't like how close the combat shotgun and the combat rifle look. and overall find them very boring.

I REALLY miss the old hunting rifle, slightly rusted barrel, stock worn and busted in places, etc. the new one is clean like an actual modern hunting rifle, don't like it.

I like the new gauss rifle aside from the baby blue cover. actually seeing the coils and the steam punk charge up display. very cool.

I don't like the new deathclaw gauntlet, I miss the F03 / NV whole hand.

Cool:
- Sniper Plasma Rifle.
- Laser weapons... All of them.
- Minigun.
- Deliverer.
- Ripper.
- Hunting Rifle.
- Combat Rifle.
- Shishkebab.

Bad:
- Plasma Pistol.
- Assault Rifle (not bad per se, but not as Assault Rifle).
- Pipe weapons.
- Gamma gun.

Cool Looking -

Full sniper rifle (ignoring the pistol grip version)

Minigun

Gatling Laser

Super Sledge

Laser Rifle/Pistol

Combat Rifle/Shotgun (the suppressors really make their profiles look nice)

Tommy Gun / SMG

.44 Magnum Revolver

Goofy/Ugly Looking -

Assault Rifle

Plasma Weaponry

Alien Blaster

Pipe weaponry (but, that's probably the point, so I don't really hold it against the pipe stuff)

Institute Weaponry

Gamma Gun

Laser Musket

I'd have to say my most commonly used weapon atm is a heavily modded Overseer's Guardian (Combat Rifle) that pulls the duties that an MP-5 pulls for an HRT/SWAT team. Suppressor, Short Light Barrel, Large Quick Eject Mag, Recoil Suppressing Stock, Ring Sight with Circle instead of a scope, and a .308 Receiver.

Current playthrough is Perception/Agility heavy statewise. Enter a room, hit VATS, queue up headshots on the four different enemies in there, and take multiple x5.3 damage sneak attacks. Very quick and deadly and quiet, with a much better engagement range than a suppressed combat shotgun (not that I don't pull that out for something big like a Deathclaw).

This is a little off topic, but how are you liking the shorter barrel? I thought about swapping out my longer barrel for the decreased weight and give it a more compact feel. I mostly use that gun indoors, but I'm worried I'll get a significant decrease in my accuracy. I use a suppressor on mine, so my accuracy is already taking a hit.

I [censored] can't agree more lol. Why so much hate for the assault rifle? That's a ww2 machine gun concept. That was widely used by the Chinese and Japanese in ww2

It didn't need range. Shotguns are close-quarter weapons and the riot shotgun was more than sufficient for the job.

None of the combat shotguns in the games are the same.

except for the combat shotguns in F3 and F4, the only difference is the placement of the magazine but other than that it is the exact design
