Weapons use stamina. But staff uses magicka, or does it?

Post » Sat Feb 22, 2014 4:49 am

I have been trying to figure that out since I playd in the beta.

Me and 2 friends tried to figure out if a staff hit harder by going magicka, or stamina.

So I had a templar with only points in magicka and a tad in health. When I had my staff on it showed the exact dmg number as the staff had by default. The same with regular weapons like swords and bows. One of my friends had only stamina and health, and hes showed exactly the same. One guy who had in both, shows the same results.

So basically, no matter what stat you took, it never actually showed up on the dmg/stat window. Other stats like max of something, seemed to work.

The abilities on the weapon themselves used stamina on regular weapons, and magicka on staves. But - what stat makes your default attacks hit harder? Because under stamina, it says that it makes "weapons" hit harder. All weapons it would seem, as nothing else was stated. Under Magicka, it did not mention weapon dmg at all, not even staff.

So the tests showed that no stat increased the base dmg for default attacks, even though it was stated that stamina would do so. I will assume it was a bug, and I reported it as such. But are we really sure that magicka affect the staff base dmg then?

Does anyone have any intel on this? The obvious would ofcource be that statt base dmg is increased by magicka, and the rest of the weapons by stamina.

I noticed raising magicka did not seem to increase my staff weapon damage (as listed in my character window). I was keeping an eye on this when raising my stats.

Not sure if this was a bug, but if your people raised stamina and also noticed no staff weapon damage increase then we might have spotted an issue.

Well right now it seems to me, that light and heavy standard attacks damage only depends on the weapon itself. Neither stamina nor magicka affect it. They only affect the abilities unlocked through skillpoints, where the abilities from weapon lines are boosted by stamina, and abilities from class lines are boosted by magicka.

(This is what i got so far from the sources available to me, i am not saying this is a fact, only that it is my current understanding of the system).

But thats the thing, stamina says it increases weapon dmg (not ability) but magicka does not claim to raise weapon dmg. So even though that would make sense, the description says otherwise.

Well, if over a decade of playing MMO's taught me anything at all, it would be "don't trust the descriptions" :D

Well like I said - raising magicka does not increase staff damage.

And you said raising stamina does not increase staff damage.

So that means no stat increases staff weapon damage, only upgrading the staff or using a new staff would seem to do this.

I don't know if it's a bug or not, if it is then I guess this is the report.

The actual damage of the staff, while elemental/magical in nature, is considered "weapon" and does increase with stamina.

However the skills from the staff line are magical and increase with magicka.

Yeah, the actual LEFT CLICK damage. Its considered a weapon. They're apparently very specific on that point. Personally I think it should increase with magicka, and hope to see it change to that.

It would make sense to have it increase with magicka. Either that or make staff skills use stamina like all the other weapon skills use.

Nah, I think how it is now makes no sense and making staff skills use stamina would be even worse. :( Speaking as an almost strictly mage-character player anyway.

It definitely makes no sense now as it is, though I think I'd be ok with staff skills using stamina (though I only played one beta, might change my opinion later). Anyway they should look into doing something with it - streamlining the staff to use one stat for both skills and damage increase would be a good move.
