Weather and Natural Disasters

Do you want Skyrim to have dramatic weather such as Tornadoes, Volcano eruptions, Tsunamis, Earthquakes, Cyclones, Floods, Forest Fires, etc?

Yes! But I don't think we will have much more then an occasional blizzard and thunderstorms.

It would be nice. Doubt to see it, but we can always dream...

You're going way too far with your examples.

What I would want is blizzards and thunderstorms. That is a must.
It would also be really really cool to see tornadoes. That is something very nice.
Finally, forest fires would be cool as well, seeing as dragons are in and that things catch fire... That is also something very nice.

These disasters tend to have a very big impact, and Skyrim won't be so dynamic that we would see towns destroyed by random earthquakes.

They just won't work, unless its part of a quest or something...

I expect blizzards and thunderstorms - nothing else.

What I'm hoping for is that the weather has actual effects on NPC's, creatures, and the player - so it is no longer possible to just stroll around in a blizzard like it's a mild inconvenience.

Does dragon fire count? Cause I want to watch the world burn when one gets to strafing.

I would like to see small volcanic eruptions that wouldn't disrupt the game world in the volcanic tundra area As well as blizzards, weather and such..

SOme of that stuff would be great, but the really big stuff I can't see actually happening. Blizzards and thunderstorms for sure.

What is this Sim City? Quest failed because a tornado killed the quest giver.

Since it is impossible for all those to be common in the same Skyrim sized geographical space, no.

However, Blizzards, Volcano eruptions and Forest Fires sounds good.

I voted no because the examples given were a little extreme, but blizzards and thunderstorms are a must, and they should have actual in-game effects.

It'd also be cool if there was a mountain high enough to climb above cloud level, and you could look down on a blizzard. :P

How many natural disasters does Scandinavia get? Ask yourself that, then come back if you find anything other than avalanche and maybe an earthquake.

I live in a warmer climate than Scandinavia, and we do not get floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, or tornadoes. The first one of those is just impractical and would only happen as a result of melting snow. The last three are simply impossible in mountainous landscapes.

True, but Skyrim doesn't equal Scandinavia. It have similarities, but obviouslt not everywhere.

There are no dragons in Scandinavia as far as I know :)

Still, if we are talking realistically of what might be included in Skyrim:
Avalanches.
Some kind of earthquake thing from Giants.
Forest fires from using too much fire spells ^^

Hurricanes (summer, fall) once a year
Blizzards (winter) all the time during winter in coast and mountain plateaus
Floods (spring) low land areas and big rivers around every other year or so
Avalanches (can happen all year except summer - but mostly in the spring) surprisingly rare
Rock slides (most common)
Forest fires (summer) pretty common, especially in birch and pine forest, not so much in evergreen forest

Everything else - Tsunamis, Earthquakes, Tornadoes: never. Earthquakes are so mild and rare that you don't feel them (we had 1 in 100 years, measured 4.8), Tsunamis are almost exclusively in tropical areas, and Tornadoes need very low land and also a difference in water/air temperature that you don't get in the climate.

Also, the only volcano in Scandinavia is on Jan Mayen, a Norwegian island far from civilization, and it's dormant. But this is one area I think they can take artistic freedom with, since volcanos make good set pieces and they're common on Iceland (though not Scandinavia, it's pretty much the offspring of isolated Norse culture) and also some in Russia very close to Norway and Sweden.

But if we don't have seasons there is little point to all but blizzards and avalanches.

I hope, HOPE there are real seasons, because Scandinavia's seasons are amazing. Fall is bright orange everywhere, winters can be very cold in the inland and mild on the coast, spring is like summer and winter at once, and summer is just as hot if not hotter than central Europe.

Also, the sun never comes up in the winter and never sets in the summer.

That's right! Vampirism can be problematic when you have to stay inside for 6 months! LOL

not a natural disaster but I'd like to see shifting water levels with tidal effects, I mean Tamerial has two moons... it should have some interesting tides and the water level at beaches and ports should reflect that to a level. I'd like to see Thunderstorms, Blizzards and perhaps Avalanches but only in certain conditions/areas. Towns/Cities are unlikely to be built in areas where Blizzards and Avalanches are likely going to hit the town/city.

I answered yes, but my opinion is more like, "sure, why not?" I like the idea, though I'm terrified of tornadoes. If I was out in the wilderness of Skyrim and a flipping tornado came out of the sky, I'd run like hell and try to find shelter. It would be quite the adrenaline rush, let me tell you... Yeah, I like it. As long as the tornadoes aren't real, I'm all for it. :D

Yeah I'm thinking there is so much going on at any one time in a game like Skyrim that it must be "fun" for the game itself to keep track. Just thinking how a big disaster like this would impact the game world makes me think the tech isn't ready for that. You know, programming in dynamic changes to the economy, the behavior of NPCs both at the time, and afterward. I think it is a mean idea, and when it happens it will probably be a scripted event, and one that is strongly tied to major quests. Maybe as worlds become more complex and the models become more realistic we may begin to see weather that produces these effects. I havn't got my hopes up for Skyrim though.

You're probably right about that, but if it were possible to implement natural disasters without ruining the game or killing your system, it would be really cool. How about if they just make it possible for you to get zapped by lightning during a storm? That would be enough for me. :shocking:
