Weather & Seasons

Capitalize, Fall, Armor = American.
Capitalise, Autumn, Armour = British.
If we can argue about that, how the hell were we allies through two World Wars.
On topic : The dates in the calendar are pretty much fixed in lore, so speeding the seasons up would be a bit weird.

Weather should be potentially as dangerous as any dragon. While I certainly like walking around in the rain, thunderstorms and blizzards should be hazardous - either from lightning, or from exposure. From a role playing perspective, it would be awesome if you really had to pay attention to the weather when out in the wilderness.

For those that remember reading "The Hobbit", do you recall how the adventurers end up in the goblin cave in the first place? It was storming, and they took shelter in the wrong cave. That's the kind of awesomeness dangerous weather in the outback could produce.

Of course, I could see making it optional - in novice mode or something.

Awesome reference!!

I think that weather should be dangerous too, I agree.

You call it Fall in America.... but you start it on the Autumnal equinox. :/

Anyway, I don't expect seasons. Why else do we have FALL FOREST?

There are many grammatical errors and spelling errors in that post.

everyone shut up and stay on topic.
grammar vs gameplay here...why is grammar winning?

(0)k, this was a big topic for me and a few others back when we had only the GI stuff., the picture of the hunter came out along side the image of the dragon flying over some sort of lakeside city surrounded by autumn trees, we were like "SEASONS FTW!" and then we calmed down.
the fact is that this is highly possible to get the visual side of this, the more physical/practical side is too. its just a matter of q/a that Bethesda has yet to comment on.
who knows what bgs has in store for us. i was very surprised at what we have seen so far, and the trailer is still JUST THE BEGINNING!

i am willing to bet that it is in. i have two things to add to this argument.
the recent concept art of Whiterun, a city in the tundra, in the pic the tundra was mostly melted.
And also obviously the images of the fall forest. which i'm hoping will not be perma fall as well as skyrim not perma winter.

i like yore idea. here is my mapping of the seasons up north

i live in Norway, so i can tell pretty much exactly the seasons, and weather with it.
5 months of winter with snow/rain and a lot of wind
autumn last for 2 months here we ha A LOT of rain and storm likke winds
summer is 3 months and its sunny, warm and some rain (if you're lucky int can rain a lot here too. last summer rained for about a month)
fall wich is 2 month is quite cold, and it's not much rain at this time, and of course the the forests look beautiful with all those colors

i would like it if the falling snow and rain wasn't just in your face the whole time. it needs to be more realistic where you can see the rain splashes in the puddles in so on. also heavy rain/snow and light rain/snow should be put into the game. also wind should be a criticle thing to archers. you should be able to see the wind blowing the trees and so forth.

I'd just love to see combat happening inside of a blizzard, where you and your enemy were trying to fight, but the atmosphere and weather effects were actually making it darn-near impossible to pull off as you get blinded, tossed about by savage winds, and can barely see each other if you are further than 3 feet apart, so thick is the falling snow, so dark is the sky. And the whole time, your both getting colder and colder, which would mean that your attack speed would begin to drop unless you had some magical enchantment keeping your temperature up. It'd also be interesting if the A.I. for such storms made your enemy say "to h*ll with this, I'm out of here!" and just take off running, vanishing into the dense clouds and weather effects.

I'm just sayin' ... I'm just sayin'!

There were some very impressive weather mods for Oblivion that did seasons and the whole nine yards. I don't see why Skyrim won't have those features, and if it doesn't they'll be added in.

Yes, fog would be really cool, so long as it is done well.

In my opinion... not doable.
In any case, it won't happen, and we all know it, we can try and mod it in for those of us who will be playing the game on the PC. The one thing I'm supporting is dynamic weather such as rain, snow, and who knows? maybe sand storms are back? :D hopefully... probably not... but hopefully.

Anywho, your requests are like saying you want this game to be more realistic. I want to get the feeling I'm actually in Skyrim too, but there's a limit on the amount of realism you can have in a game.

Puddles would be easy to mod in, but hard to do well. You would need a LOT of activators, and frame rate would potentially plummet. I'm going to guess that we won't see dynamic puddles for the same reason.

I do expect rain to collide with meshes this time around, though. It was annoying in Morrowind, and downright unforgivable in Oblivion.

I am all for more realistic weather and seasons--anything that contributes to a richer natural environment is a good thing in my opinion. So I would love to see some of the things the OP suggests.

And I know this is not on topic, but what I would really like to see in terms of weather is precipitation not falling through shelter in outdoor cells. I didn't like running around in the rain and always wanted to take shelter under some overhang or other feature, so it was a little annoying that precipitation fell everywhere in outdoor cells no matter where you were standing.

I realize that this is relatively minor, but it would be nice to be able to take shelter from the weather while outdoors.

use the word "autumn" instead of "fall" please. its bad English.

So is not capitalizing the "u", and the "i" in your comment.

Pretty much this. As awesome as it would be to have dynamic seasons (which I actually think should sync up with the in-game months), Bethesda doesn't seem to be going that route. They've repeatedly mentioned having a single perpetual "fall forest" region. Kind of ironic considering the season is named for what the leaves do after they change colors.

P.S. We call it "autumn" in America, too, but not as often.

dude what. i mean DIFFERENT GAMES HURR DURR but RDR did that [censored] flawlessly. even without puddles, tons of games have dynamic wet surfaces in rain - GTA4 has them, STALKER has them, and i'm sure there's a lot more but i haven't played any other modern games with a dynamic weather cycle for longer than five minutes (European fantasy sandbox RPGs bore me to tears).

stop thinking in terms of Oblivion modding when discussing whether or not something is doable in Skyrim. this isn't about PORTALS or WORLD SIZE or whatever the [censored] this is basic shader tech that has been in games since at least 2007.

i'm hopeful for seasons. i mean they have DYNAMIC SNOW this time so it would very easily solve the issue of HMM IT'S SNOWING BUT EVERYTHING'S STILL GREEN, MY IMMERSION HAS BEEN SHATTERED, and they've built their own foliage tech this time around, and considering it's probably going to have to respond to a) being cut down and b) being set on fire it seems trivial to script trees to drop their leaves once Last Seed rolls around.

also, fun fact: Oblivion was apparently going to have holidays at some point but they scrapped the idea. i don't actually remember reading about this at all but there's a ton of strings in the game settings named after holidays. it's kind of neat! i hope they manage to implement them in Skyrim.
