Weather & Seasons

Post » Sat Mar 05, 2011 2:40 am

A major flaw that I saw in Oblivion was that it wasn't completely obvious what season it was, and that weather effects were horrible (rain & snow move with you). After playing Oblivion for 500+ hours I wanted the weather to be a key component to the next Elder Scrolls Game so my idea is that there should be seasons that influence the weather, but unlike irl seasons Skyrim's seasons should be very short.

Basically, I want to know for a fact that I am in Skyrim, the northern region of Tamriel. And to support this, I think Skyrim's seasons should be similar to that of the Arctic region on our planet, where Winter is actually about 5 1/2 months long, spring 2 weeks long, summer 5 1/2 months long, and autumn being 2 weeks long (due to Earth's axis.) I also want dynamic weather effects where the seasonal effects are instensified based on how North/South you are in Skyrim, for example if you are in Northern Skyrim during winter, there are frequent blizzards. Unlike the way we experience seasons (3 months a season) I think a Skyrim winter should last 1 month in game time, spring lasts a couple of days in game time, summer lasts a month " ". Autumn lasts a couple of days " " (Make sure to include the fact that about a second irl is a minute in TES games). I think seasons should last this long because not everybody keeps playing their character for more than 2 or so months in TES time, so everybody can experience a whole year in a decent amount of time. The reason to why I think spring and fall should be so short is that they are basically the transition time between winter and summer.

Another thing I think should be implemented into Skyrim is season-player effects such as:
Winter: (These effects will only apply if you are caught in a blizzard or if you are out at night) you move slower, attack slower, and slowly drain health based on how insulated your clothes/armor is (insulation could be a new feature to clothing/armor.)
Spring: Nothing happens
Summer: You get fatigued faster based on how insulated your clothes/armor is
Autumn: Nothing happens

Some basic weather effects that I also want to see:
Rain and snow that falls dynamically
Trees lose leaves during fall
Trees grow leaves back during spring
During winter the ground is covered in snow, which leaves tracks when animals/NPCs walk through it.
During fall the ground is covered in leaves which crunch when something walks through them.
Obviously, NPC actions should be based on the season/current weather (children don't play outside during Blizzards)
Buildings should grow icicles during winter.
Rivers freeze in winter
Rivers become rapids during Spring
Your line of sight should be dramatically shortened during winter

Which is why I suggested shortening the seasons.

I want effing blizzards that make you and your enemies slow down in some parts of the game. that would make the game play so friggin awesome.

i dont think they're going to add different weather/seasons but rather different areas that look like a different season, for example rainy areas, and the snowy, and fall, ext, ext. just look at all the pics and you'll get the idea

If weather affects the character, I reckon it would be good if it was restricted to a hardcoe/survival mode, as I reckon many players wouldn't like that kind of thing forced on them, which is fair enough. I'm all for a hardcoe/survival mode though.

That is pretty much Oblivion for you, and I suggested shortening the seasons by month, not by making days pass by the minute.

I think you're right. The total seasons idea might be put into the game, but in traveling throughout Skyrim, one would experience all the different seasons/climates based on the geographic area.

*facepalm* you've gotta be kidding. you didn't capitalize the words autumn or fall, and also the words at the beginning of your sentences. don't bother to post if you don't have something to contribute to the topic. Sorry, but these posts really bug me.

On topic: Dynamic weather and foliage effects have already been confirmed. As for the seasons thing, that's not a bad idea. I was thinking it'd be cool if there were spells based on the current weather conditions, for example if it was stormy you could summon a lightning bolt from the sky to strike your enemy. If there was some sort of season system implemented then elemental spells such as fire or frost could be made to have a slight damage bonus in their respective weather conditions. I'm all for the idea of changing seasons, but maybe not until the next TES game since skyrim seems to already have set weather conditions based on location. I think this would have worked great for oblivion, but it seems like there's a huge emphasis on the variety of weather and general environmental conditions offered in skyrim, and maybe I'm wrong here but again, I think it's all based on location and I think it'd be tough for the devs to change that this late in the game.

Lol again - I can't decide if this thread is full of fail or win; either way, it's entertaining. What's the topic supposed to be?

If the seasons are distinct I think you'd notice. Based on the trailer the variety of environments and weather conditions are pretty distinct. Snow is white, grass is green etc.

So are you saying ideas that would make the game better are bad ideas if they wouldn't be noticed? And if you don't notice that you are slowly dying, moving slower, and attacking slower in blizzards you need to be more alert.

i would definitly notice, for example one game that i really noticed the weather changing was in left for dead 2, in one chapter it started raining bullets and it was pretty intense, so if they could add a fog and lots of rain then it would make the environment really dangreous and fun.
