Weather in Skyrim

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:16 pm

What do you think the Weather system in Skyrim would be like? Snow is most probably confirmed, but could there be rain in Skyrim? (Maybe the non-snowy areas would be more rainy?)

Perhaps there might be Blizzards which would obscure one's vision, giving the opportunity for sneak characters to maybe take out a merchant trapped in the blizzard, or for hungry creatures to ambush you.

But yeah, I'm hoping for it.

I really hope so. Bethesda needs to get passed the "no weather effects" deal. Blizzard did it perfectly for WoW, so why can't bethesda? If disc space is a problem, we can always live without some of the more unused features that everyone complains about.

EDIT

ignore my derpness, forgot Oblivion had weather and worked it fine. >.<

but yea, snow storms, hurricanes, avalanches etc would be great.

I want snow storms! I want them to obscure my vision and slow me down. But I would also like to see rain, in the non-snowy regions, of course. :)

Yeah, SR definitely needs real storms. Not screen effects of rain that falls through canopies and stuff when you're outside.

I like this idea. This could add a whole bunch of new gameplay opportunities if done right.

I hope rain/snow gets collision recognition (or whatever it's called) against the roofs or arches of buildings, the Morrowind Code Patch was able to get roofs to stop "leaking", so Bethesda should be able to, I hope.

whiteouts, lots of low fog in the grassy parts, mysterious moon light over the snowy areas....purple/blue sun sets.....the northern lights would be epic!

Indeed, I would love to see the Northern Lights!

Sunsets were one of my favourite moments in Oblivion, and I would love to see a snowy sunset while drinking mead in Skyrim. :foodndrink:

Well, if you think Bruma is cold, wait 'till you go to Skyrim.

i'd also love to see snowstorms, also snow effects like footprints in the snow and NPC's covered in snow, it would be awesome to see a grizzled bearded Nord with snow covering his beard and breath vapour on the cold wind

Snow no doubt, blizzards/whiteouts would be cool. Some rain and lighting where you can actually see the lightning bolts actually come out of the clouds and hit the ground would be awesome. So rare have I ever seen actual lighting bolts in games with storms, usually just see the light flicker inside storm clouds and have the screen flicker white really fast or some other effect like that.

More atmosphere would be nice like when wind blows not only do trees sway but leaves blow off, dirt gets stirred up off the ground clothing blows around etc..., and snow would actually slowly accumulate on everything including your armor and weapons. Same thing with rain, puddles would form here and there, trenches, gully's or city sidewalks would fill with streams of water. And how about tides for big bodies of water.

Breath vapour is something I haven't thought of, I hope they are able to get it into the game. IIRC, I've only seen breath vapour in FIFA 11, not sure about 10.

My hopes for weather:

? That there be a bit of everything: snow, rain, fog, hail, thunger/lightning, wind, maybe even tornados/hurricanes/dust storms if appropriate
? That the weather has a physical affect on the environment: snow banks that build up in storms and diminish in sunlight, rain the collects in puddles and raises water level a bit with enough time, small bodies of water that freeze in cold seasons and thaw in warm seasons, trees/plants that sway more or less based on the wind speed, small debris being carried around in aimless eddies by wind/water, sleet that builds up on windows and roofs in the early morning, etc.
? The the weather has a physical effect on the player character: wet clothes look wet (water dripping off armor, fabric becoming darker and denser, hair becoming matted and thicker, etc.), wind that ripples any hanging fabric/hair, movement restricted when walking throw a snow bank, etc.

I'm not too concerned about weather to be honest, but I think that a good weather system can definitely go a long way toward establishing an immersive and beautiful world.
