Weather?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:19 pm

Not sure. I meant if there was a freeplay mode, different weather and transitioning day/night would be good.

I seriously hope there is freeplay, or at least constantly updated new missions. Destroying the same reactor would get old real fast. But it didn't in TF2...

A dark, rainy map in a place like Container City would be completely epic.

Every multiplayer FPS I know of has players repeatedly replaying the same handful of maps over and over. I don't see how the introduction of a storyline is a bad thing. On the contrary, the fact that each of the Missions is more varied than most other games should break the monotony. For reactor, its not just "Blow up either point A or B, then rinse and repeat" like most games. Its "Go in, hack the cooling fan, then blow up the reactor, completing any minor missions that come up in that time"

If Brink is half of what Splash says it is, I'll still have buckets of fun for months. And I like to be optimistic and think that Splash is telling the truth, not blowing it out of proportion like Molyneux.

The idea of weather intrigues me, but I can see this (from REVOLUZZER)

+50% chance on SMART to fail

run - jump - grab edge - slip - brainsauce on the ground

happening or something similar. I'd be appeased with a "night" map or something darker toned.

No weather far as far as I know.
Fixed day and night settings are in. A map played at night will always be played at night (untill we have some creative people + an SDK who make a day version)

I would love to see it though.

I'm looking forward to the night maps then, they were my favorite in CoD:MW and I thought Halo:CE had a fun night level on campaign as well. Though they are not uncommon I still think they are underused as a breakup to FPS monotony.

Should be an especially interesting contrast for the colorful style of Brink.

I hadn't thought of that, such a vibrant color scheme might turn out nicely cool on the night maps.

I don't know much about the story telling aspect about brink, but I think it's completely possible that at the END of the storyline, there might me a stormy part. Maybe just the very last one, just as sort of an epic future-determining battle ominously imposed by thunder, foreshadowing the inevitable break of the war. But, as stated a million times, any weather change would be in the story line, so nothing drastic like hurricanes or snow. But maybe an add on! Ah, so there's your hope guys.

Well I think snow is out of the question because from the looks of everyone on the Ark it is in a tropical or warm part of the ocean. And with the whole Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" all coming true who knows if there is even able to be snow. Didn't the ice caps melt from global warming and that's why everyone is swarming the Ark. So I'd say rain should be in but not snow. But it still would be sweet to see a heavy in a parka looking like some death dealing Santa... like Futurama! :flamethrower:

I would like to see the weather change in some maps. Idk something about that sounds really nice. I would be kind of sad if they didnt add a night or a rain map...but even if they dont, im pretty sure someone is going to make a custom map at some point.

Adding in weather effects to a game that doesn't have them would be quite difficult, wouldn't it?

I agree that there should be both night and rainy maps.

I'm surprised online FPS games don't have dynamic weather effects at this point. Only one I can think of is Left 4 Dead 2.

They should make a system where the map goes from night to day or vice versa (Not to this game specifically though it would be cool). Or add random thunderstorms like in L4D2 or have fog roll in. Would really add a lot IMO, make you change your tactics up a bit.

The ark is supposed to be off the coast of California, most likely close to the Baja peninsula. From a geological standpoint, it would make sense that their would be few to no weather changes. Night and day maps sounds like an awesome addition to gameplay. Imo it always goes a long way in breaking up the monotony. Weather would be excellent, and the argument to implement it is valid, but if Splashdamage has not done so thus far, it is highly unlikely that they would do so, as it would probably result in a much bemoaned delay. I'm gonna buy it regardless, and *hopefully it will be awesome.

Where did you get this information. For all I know, they are just floating around somewhere at sea. California might not even exist by then and the climate will probably have changed due to the molten ice and extra water.

Wedgwood has said a couple times that it is located off the coast of San Fransisco.

Right.

Still. I believe that if all this flooding happens, the climate will change anyways. Perhaps to more tropical situations (less ice = less solar reflection = more water = more heat absorption) On the other hand, a new ice age might start.

As most shooters try to make use of the best possible graphics, especially proper weather-effects would be too much.

Even the Unreal 3 Engine, which is really reserved in the use of hardware can't handle proper weather-effects on top of good graphics.

Just a really low visibility map in general would be cool. My heavy medic would come thundering out of the shadows and throw wraith at you.

doesn't dynamic weather effects have a really negative effects on lag and connection quality?

Yea, it was taken out into international waters so they can rent their labs out to companies who want to do research in a place not bothered by laws.
