Webcomics

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:23 am

So, Ive recently started reading the comics Something Positive and Questionbale Content. Ive always been a pretty big fan of webcomics, and then I got to thinking, 'What are other people into?'

So, what webcomics to you read on a regular basis?

XKCD

and

Megatokyo

The only two I follow. Read every new strip the day of. I'm always sad about how long Megatokyo takes to update though...

I always debate whether to keep the newest XKCD for M/W/F morning as a treat to start off my day or to read it early Su/Tu/Th night (it's usually put online around 9pm my time)

I've been reading S*P for many years now, however the content and language aren't always forum-appropriate.

If a comic contains inappropriate language or content please do not link directly to it. If it's borderline you can probably link to it with a re-direct (instructions can be found in the rules)

XKCD for humour that yoyos between the nerdy and the bizarre.

Ctrl Alt Del for the slapstick and gaming.

Subnormality for Rowntree's hamfisted approach to social commentary.

Questionable Content for the soap opera. Also, it is so hard to find one of them that doesn't break forum rules.

My favorite comic is Hark! A Vagrant, it's a very history geek sort of comic. XKCD is usually good as well, being a different sort of geeky :)

I've recently started reading Basic Instructions, which I'm enjoying quite a lot. My wife just got the Lackadaisy book which is gorgeous and quite funny, but the online strip updates infrequently. :( Girls with Slingshots is pretty good and at this point it's the only strips I follow that update daily. I should probably try and get back in to Wapsi Square, I enjoyed it quite a lot before it became far more fanciful and my wife told me it's reigned that in a bit recently.

There are a few strips I check every few weeks, often because they have a slow update schedule or because their content tends to be rather hit-or-miss: Three Panel Soul, Goblins, SMBC, Punch an' Pie, Subnormality, and probably a few others I'm not remembering off the top of my head.

When it comes to gamer comics the only one I still follow is Penny Arcade. I gave up on RealLife not long after it started and stopped following PvP several years ago; Control Alt Delete never did much for me.

I recently stopped following Evil Inc. Although I was never really in to super hero comics I enjoyed Evil Inc for quite some time but the last few months haven't done anything for me. I dropped The Book Of Biff around the same time. They're still worth checking out and they both have large archives for someone with a lot of time to kill :)

Heh, I read it via Cracked.com, where it is usually dissected and torn apart for it's repetitiveness and bland humour. I think it has been getting better though.

Sluggy Freelance. It's jumped the shark a while ago, takes itself much too seriously at times, and is impossible for newcomers to get into at this stage (being 14 years old), but I like it and follow it nonetheless.

Spinnerette.

The Meek. NSFW, especially in the first chapter. Let's just say one of the protagonists doesn't like to wear clothes.

Pawn. Also NSFW.

Just Cyanide and Happyness once in a while. They have some great ones, and a lot of mediocre ones.

I read,,,

Penny Arcade
White Ninja
VG Cats
Ctrl+Alt+Del
The Noob
Rob and Elliot
Three Panel Soul
XKCD
pictures for sad children
Dark Legacy Comics
Goblins
My Cardboard Life
Left-Handed Toons
Hyperbole and a Half

The only one I make sure to check on its scheduled days is Goblins. I've become pretty invested in the fates of its silly little characters.

Been reading lots, lately. I'll go by order they appear in my favorites.

Ctrl + Alt + Del - Guess I don't really have to explain this one.
Least I Could Do - Don't really know how to explain this one, but it can be a riot. Done by the same guys as....
Looking for Group - MMO-parodying fantasy hilarity.
Order of the Stick - tabletop RPG-parodying fantasy hilarity.
Qustionable Content - Already mentioned a few times. Also hilarious.
Menage a 3 - a NSFW Canadian webcomic about a geeky comic artist and his sixy female roomates that he has no luck with.
Eerie Cuties - A SFW comic by the same person about a school best described as evil Hogwarts.
Legend of Bill - A Conan parody about a former accountant and his adventures with a princess and a snarky dragon.
Sore Thumbs - Don't read it if you value your sanity (obviously I lost mine years ago, so I am safe).
Drowtales - Thought it would be a Drizzt rip-off thing, but it is surprisingly good, if exceptionally cheesy. Very nice artwork, very long archive. (Site has a NSFW section, but the comic is safe.)
Zap! - A pretty cheesy space adventure, but it has really grown since its beginnings. The art is good, and the characters likeable.
Goblins - A hilarious look at the lives of those creatures you think only exist to give you xp.
Devilbear, the Grimoires of Bearalzebub - Yes, its wierd, but surprisingly creative and sometimes funny.
Endstone - A great find, this one. It is a post-apocalyptic comic book set in a world that I would say is part Shadowrun, part RIFTS.
Subculture - About a bunch of geeks and the comic shop they love.
Scenes From A Multiverse - See five different strange places every week. Vote on the one you would like to see again! Very funny stuff.
The Dreamland Chronicles - This one is done in CGI. The story is very cheesy and cliche, but it is still quite charming. You can tell the creator puts a lot of love into it.

I had a couple that I normally read but don't anymore.

Megatokyo and Applegeeks

Megatokyo

The only two I follow. Read every new strip the day of. I'm always sad about how long Megatokyo takes to update though...

Yes but if Fred doesn't update with a new comic you'll be blessed with a shirt guy dom comic

We all know that's the real reason we read megatokyo.

The perry bible fellowship (Doesn't update anymore, but this have some great bizarre comics)
Cyanide and Happiness (Random Humor)
Scandinavia and the World (Funny comic that plays on national stereotypes)

Spinnerette.

The Meek. The mods would have my head if I linked to this one.

Pawn. Can't link to this one either.

I used to love Sluggy, my primary e-mail was even on sluggy.net. I started to dislike it around chapter 25 or so and a while later quit entirely . . . wow, that was nearly a decade ago!

I forgot about Krakow, I've seen Spinnerette but I haven't checked it out yet. Sometime I need to catch up on Charliehorse.

I used to read over 100+ webcomics every day, but I ended up getting frustrated with many of them for lack of updates or just incredibly slow update schedule (looking at you VG Cats), some of them finished their stories (Inverloch), and some of them just got too ridiculous or convoluted for me to care (Darths and Droids). Now days I use a slightly truncated list.

My best favorites that get to sit on my taskbar:
Girl Genius
TwoKinds
Sins Venials
Penny Arcade
Mega Tokyo

I think TwoKinds was one of the very first comics I started reading. Let us not speak of Ctrl+Alt+Del, for it does not deserve merit of any kind.

All the rest of the comics I check every single day. I also use it as a browser test, see how it performs when it's trying to open 30+ tabs in the same second.
Johnny Wander
Dominic Deegan
Not Enough BBQ Steampunk Soiree
The Meek
Red String
Supernormal Step
Spinnerette
Trying Human
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
xkcd
Three Panel Soul
Amazing Superpowers
Slightly Damned
Sinfest
Misfile
blip
Eerie Cuties
El Goonish Shive
Looking For Group
Cwen's Quest
Yosh!
Girls With Slingshots
Awkward Zombie
Aikonia
The Zombie Hunters
Lackadaisy
Dresden Codak
Peaches and Cream
Roza (the newest permanent addition)

Several candidates for either re-admission to the list or for new admission that I haven't gotten around to reading yet:
Evil Diva
The Phoenix Requiem
Manly Guys Doing Manly Things
Romantically Apocalyptic
Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki[/url] (currently going through the archives of)
Catena
The Book of Biff
Zap!
Flipside (NSFW)
The Lounge (NSFW)
Corner Alley 13

The Abominable Charles Christopher (fantasy)
Atland (fantasy)
Crimson Dark (sci-fi)
Fey Winds (fantasy)
Girl Genius (steampunk)
Order of the Stick (fantasy)
Questionable Content (urban)
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal (comic strip)
The Non Adventures of Wonderella (comedy, superhero)
Wapsi Square (urban + aztec mythology)
Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic (fantasy)
Zebra Girl (fantasy)

Those are the only ones I bother to keep up with these days. Crimson Dark is sort of "meh" and I might drop it off my list.

Alright guys, I specifically asked that you not link to comics with inappropriate content or language. If a comic uses profanity linked to on the forums you shouldn't be linking to it (the rules are laxer for this when it pertains to a Bethesda Softworks published title, but these situations require a link redirect).

Since people are having a difficult time following this, and since the moderators can't check out every comic for inappropriate content, PLEASE STOP LINKING TO THE COMICS YOU ARE DISCUSSING
