2 weeks and there is the first beta patch...

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 8:28 pm

Which does:

Beta Update 1.2.33

New Features

  • Number pad keys can now be used for remapping
  • Remapping Activate now works on Quick Container

Fixes

  • General memory and stability improvements
  • Fixed issue where equipped weapons become locked after completing Reunions
  • Fixed issue with When Freedom Calls where the quest would not complete
  • During Confidence Man, fixed issue where player's health would continuously regenerate
  • Fixed crash related to jumping into water and reloading saved games
  • Fixed issue where Launcher would not save God Rays Quality setting properly

Is it just me or should this list be slightly longer?

And fix at least a third of all the bugs the forums is filled with? :/

I'm usually a very patient guy, but cmon, after 2 weeks?

I agree not even any settlement Fixes and there are a lot of obvious bugs and just plain tedious things with the system.

Have you ever worked on a professional development team for a product that's been used for more than 25 million accumulated hours?

If this is your first Bethesda game (which I am assuming) just be patient, Bethesda is aware of most of the bugs and even if you dont have much faith in them the modders are on it THAT I can surely tell you. Once they release the Creation Kit these things will be a bad memory. I know it doesn't seem fair or right but Bethesda provides us with a great game with a lot of freedom in a vast landscape and allows modders (in fact promotes modding) to do what they like with the game as to fit copyright laws. I wont lecture but I will say just be patient :) itll be worth it soon. to just give an example even without the C.K. modders have already found a way to run better and stable frame rates and mod the game.

Its been 2 weeks, holy guys relax. Most of the time has been just documenting bugs and figuring out why they happen. It takes longer then 20 seconds to fix things.

You say you are a patient man, but I dont really believe that when you want every bug fixed within two weeks. Hell some bugs I have been a part of take an entire week to fix, let alone diagnose, test, etc.

Its the first i'm playing since release, ya.

And i know what can be done by modders, i'm modding quite alot myself, i was just impressed how little they managed to fix in that amount of time.

I always bought Bethesda games many months after release. But I decided to preorder this one. Considering the rate at witch the fixes are coming (one of the slowest I ever seen), and the shameful customer support, this will be the last one (next one at 75% sale).

Meh. I'm still waiting for Atari to patch E.T.

Anyways, only took a few weeks to get keybinding implemented? Heck yeah! That is a big deal to get hammered out that fast. :goodjob:

Bear in mind, they have to be able to recreate the bugs and issues themselves in order to then investigate why it happens and fix it.

It's no good if even a dozen people are reporting a particular issue, if the dev's can't get the same bug to occur on their own systems. All they can do is guess on the cause and fix and often that can throw up a new problem.

That's why it's far better to give as much detail as possible as opposed to the 'it's broken, fix it' threads that pop up a lot and bury the detailed bug reports. (That's the consolidated thread is more useful than a dozen different threads)

Better they focus on finding the bug at the root cause rather than slapping a quick fix on that may not work.

Also, it's a beta patch. It'll probably go through a couple more iterations before it officially drops.

They stated that we should expect smaller but more frequent patches - So, patience. There will be more.

Fallout 4 has played relatively smooth for me though. Very few bugs/glitches.

Then you have not seen very many games get patched then. 2 weeks is not slow in patch terms unless there was some game breaking bug being patched which this isnt. But then I forget most people now are not satisfied unless they have nothing short of instantaneous solutions to things.

  • Number pad keys can now be used for remapping
  • Remapping Activate now works on Quick Container

Good, quick fixes. We need to be able to play adequately to enjoy the game,

  • General memory and stability improvements

Awesome, the game has to run correctly for us to be able to enjoy the game. Keep in mind that some people couldn't even launch the game. Make the game work then we can be annoyed by people falling through the floor or quest-trigger not triggering.

  • Fixed issue where equipped weapons become locked after completing Reunions
  • Fixed issue with When Freedom Calls where the quest would not complete
  • During Confidence Man, fixed issue where player's health would continuously regenerate

Not a priority, good they could cram it in here.

  • Fixed crash related to jumping into water and reloading saved games

Stability. What good is a game that cannot be played?

  • Fixed issue where Launcher would not save God Rays Quality setting properly

Once the game is playable and stable, they can start fixing scripts, quests, AI and glitches. It might be frustrating for now, but what good is it if it doesn't launch? I wouldn't worry too much, most of it will be fixed, the question is how much will be left, and how many new bugs will be introduced :)

Some people are defending the patch time with rationale such as takes time to document, reproduce, implement specific fixes, it's only been two weeks, etc

All valid points, BUT...one key assumption that in my opinion is incorrect.

The assumption that bethesda is starting on these bugs from scratch. That's not only improbable, but also implies the unspoken assumption that bethesda dev, QA, and producers are incompetent - which I do not believe at all.

Some more obscure or hard to reproduce issues reported no doubt are corner cases and will need to be verified, solution debated internally, tested for balance, etc. But you cant have it both ways -

A- either bethesda staff are triple A professionals and therefore competent - in which case there is no way a good deal of what we are complaining about was/is unknown. They are known issues which were logged and for whatever reason not adjusted before launch

Or

B- bethesda staff - the entire chain from devs, QA, producers, etc - are so amateur they did not find or come across to log as potential issue at least some of the top issues players are venting about.

I find scenario B to be so improbable,it is virtually nil and simply the first scenario is left.

Basically, it's not accurate to say bethesda has only had 2 weeks to work on these issues. Unless you assume scenario A, at least some and most likely many of the day 1 bugs players have mass reported have been known issues to bethesda for quite sometime. Hence the time to patch for first incremental fix release is not merely two weeks.

Just a quick question, and I played FO3 and New Vegas at launch date so I am very patient and willing to put up with bugs in such a vast world but shouldn't game breaking bugs come first ahead of UI tweaks etc? I cannot progress with the main story (haven't met Institute yet) BOS or Railroad because all 3 missions require me to go near or through the Monsignor Plaza area which crashes straight to desktop or just freezes without an error message.

So 3 of the 4 main factions are unavailable to me, does anyone know if this area will be included in the "General memory and stability improvements" I had assumed that this issue would be a priority as it is game breaking and occurring on all formats?

Fallout 4 is still far less buggy than, particularly New Vegas, I actually went 20 hours without any crash and its simple enough now to avoid that area so I'm actually quite impressed with the lack of bugginess in this game, New Vegas on launch day it was a struggle to play for 20 minutes without some kind of glitch!

Same here. I've had a few CTD's, and last night I had a glitch where my gun was pressed up against my body like I was running, but I wasn't. I couldn't shoot either. I loaded an earlier save and all was good.

Overall, I tend to have pretty decent luck with avoiding the (major) issues many others seem to get with newly released TES/Fallout games.

Well the first DLC is out early next year so i'm assuming the majority of the team is working on that. Personally i haven't encountered any major bugs at all, just some minor wackynes like Piper sounding like a sewing machine non stop and corpses doing tai-chi.

Honestly, people need to relax. This patch is for one reason - and that is to fix the key mappings - which was critical.

From what I've seen, they have fixed a lot more than is listed. A complaint about them not being completely transparent about what the patch FULLY does might be in order, however.

Here are the instruction to get the beta update from Steam:

To get the beta, you need to do the following:

1. Log into Steam
2. Right Click on Fallout 4 in your Library
3. Select Settings
4. Select Betas
5. A drop down menu will appear. Select Beta Update
6. Select OK.
7. Wait a few minutes and Fallout 4 should update.
8. When done, Fallout 4 should appear as Fallout 4 [beta] in your Library

NOTE: Step 3 is wrong. On my version of Steam, I had to select properties, not settings.

I'm sure full patch notes will be made available when it goes live and is out of beta.

That said, I have no complaints with the patch timing. I can play the game without many issues. Far cry from Skyrim on PS3 when it came out. I had to pretty much wait several months before I was able to get more than 20 hours into a game without having the save get ruined.

It's called a BETA PATCH. There might be more bug fixes when the patch is fully released.

Be lucky that these bugs are being fixed, Skyrim had 9 patches total and STILL has many bugs that were never fixed by them.
