Weight painting a model

I am fairly sure I have this correct, but a little confirmation never hurts. When you are weight painting the vertices of a model and you are splitting the weights between bones, the sum of the weights used must add up to 1.0 on a specific vertex?

I think it's enough it's some weight from at least 1 bone.
