Weird persistant banging noise indoors

Post » Fri May 18, 2012 1:47 pm

Hi guys.

So basically, in most indoor areas (every singe shop, most inns/houses etc.) there is a constant banging noise. It sounds like some kind of object repetitively hitting against something else, but it ever stops and is present in almost every single house/shop/inn in the game. It happens about 5 times a second. At this point I'm trying to figure out if there's anyone else with the issue, or even better, if there's anyone who has figured out a way to fix it. If it was in just one area I'd put up with it but as soon as I walk into any shops I have to turn down the effects slider in sound. Incredibly annoying bug for sure.

Thanks
Minions.

I have the same issue in at least one inn that I can't remember. Its like the sound of chucking a game object against a wall over and over.

Yeah that's the one! I've been investigating a little more and it seems to happen when NPCs are interacting with an object with other items on it. For example, the first shop in the first town. As soon as you enter, all is well but the second he LEANS on the counter the sounds start going crazy. I even broke in at night, stole all the stuff from his table, waited till day, then re-entered and the sound had ceased even when he was leaning on the counter. It would seem a physics bug is causing the objects on the counter to move around constantly when there's an NPC interacting with it, causing these annoying sounds.

Don't worry, that's just your parents banging on your door to get you to go outside.

Sorry, just kidding. Seriously I have no idea what your problem might be.

I have the same issue, pretty much in all tight indoor areas. I assume that it is caused by objects being stuck somewhere and banging around wildly. The physics engine has made me laugh quite a few times so far, because objects (even heavy ones like wooden carts) can bounce around like crazy, doing barrel rolls and flip-flops (works best if you jump on them or get a door moving in their proximity). In one particular basemant, everything was flying all over the place when I first entered it, and now there is just a huge mess of objects lying around. At least the sound bug didn't occur. Oh well.

I have not experienced this bug, but I seem to be having sound issues. When NPC's talk the sound is crackled.

There's a few people having this issue. Try setting your sound card driver's sample rate to 44.1khz and bit rate to 24.

On my issue, we might as well start compling some system specs to figure out if it's hardware related.

So mine

XP 32 bit
Audigy ZS-2 sound card
E8400 @ 3.6ghz
HD5850 1gb
4gb ram
Steam version of skyrim w/ update.

Other than this issue my skyrim seems to be running pretty nicely for my slightly dated system, but I must say this bug is getting old and annoying very quickly.

Anyone find anything in the way of a solution yet?

If not... patch this please Bethesda!

If anyone is still having this issue it is because fps is going to high. goto skyrimnexus and dl fps limiter. follow directions and then set fps limit to 60. this finally fixed it for me. I also sometimes have a wierd glitch in caves that makes it sound like i am underwater. hopefully this fixes it as well but not sure yet. good luck everyone.

this also supposedly fixes random objects flying off shelves indoors as well.

This is EXACTLY what the problem is actually. For example I can no longer enter the Companions place in Whiterun. Objects are constantly flying everywhere (and banging against walls -- making the noises you speak of)

I can't enter that building without getting hit in the head with a "bowl" and being killed instantly for example.

Just another one of the CPU usage problems most likely -- think about how many useless physics calculations are going on, banging invisible items against the walls, that you cant even see.

That's hilarious, sorry but that's funny as [censored].

Anyway OP, check for an object cliping through a table or desk. Had this issue in the solitude inn, was a book 'attempting' to fall through a table, being unable to and trying to reset its position over and over. stealing it resolved the annoying noise and enabled the guests at the inn to have a peaceful nights sleep.

This is caused because you disabled Vsync. I don't know why some people experience this and some don't, but turning Vsync back on fixed it for me. Sure, it will cause the mouse to be laggy, but its better than having that annoying noise.

As stated, this occurs because your framerate is going too high. Skyrim was simply not designed to be played with V-Sync off, but since V-Sync can cause performance issues, a lot of people do it anyways, and then problems occur.

The FPS Limiter fixes this problem. If you don't want to use it, the only other option is to turn V-Sync back on.

That helps with a few things, but not everything. There are still a lot of issues with the physics engine even with an FPS limiter. The physics engine itself was either poorly optimized or is itself buggy. Dragon bones bouncing along the countryside and poltergeist-influenced house items are still very much present with or without Vsync.

Maybe, maybe not. Games Like LA noire are limited to 30 FPS because of the technology they have AKA the engine. You cannot expect a game like Skyrim to run perfectly with everything it has and not expect that changing settings that where never intended to be changed to not do anything bad. There is a reason why there is no option to change Vsync in the launcher. Fallout also had issues when people turned Vsync off. We are in the late stage of the console lifeline. This means that PCs of today will be extremely overpowered for games designed for the consoles and ported to the PC. This causes problems and makes Vsync a necessity, not an option.

You can blame Bethesda for preferring the consoles all you wan't, but it is just a business decision. The consoles sold millions of copies while the PC sold under 500 thousand I believe. That means that the PC community will always be an after thought. This isn't something new and it shouldn't come as a surprise.

It makes less than no sense why having a framerate above 60 should make the physics engine start throwing around items and assuming everything is in perpetual freefall. Can anybody actually confirm that turning vsync back on stops this? I've tried it and it doesn't seem to do much for me.

Yeah, I can confirm as well. Vertical axis sensitivity and physics are both tied to your FPS. As long as it stays at 60 or below, everything's fine, but once it goes above, it all goes wonky.

There is no good reason for making vsync a requirement. If a game requires vsync to function correctly, the programmers have failed.

Agreed. I abhore vsync, I'd rather get a little bit of screen tearing than nausea-inducing input lag. If the game required Vsync to play properly, I'd be trying to get a refund, and the fact that I've got to use a third party mod to get the game to work without vsync is highly questionable. I can confirm that the FPS limiter does fix the problem. I've found the physics start to get buggy at about 85 FPS, so I've set the limit at 70 and it's been more or less fine.
