Weird things that have happened in your game

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:56 am

My savegame is now 11 MB and is getting rather unstable, and that has lead to some weird issues. What issues have you experienced, either because of savegame corruption, or because you did something wrong when installing a mod?

In L'enfant Plaza, I found 2 filled nuka cola bottles called ULNuka Cola, with 0 weight and value. I clicked on it with the console and they appeared to be from the original game, not a mod. When I picked one up it crashed the game. When I restarted my game, and walked up to the cola again, the two bottles suddenly disappeared before I could pick it up again. As if the game suddenly thought, 'hey, this isn't supposed to be here'. :P

At some point I was also unable to jump sideways in third person. It would look like I jumped into an invisible wall all the time. In first person it worked fine.

I was also unable to save without crashing the game when I had these issues. Luckily I had backup saves...

Once I couldn't save without crashing either. Thing is, if I re-loaded the savegame once, I could save till I restarted the game. Then I couldn't save again :D

Reverting to a previous save was the only thing that fixed it. Interestingly enough, the healthy save was the most recent non-CASM one :brokencomputer:

One other time I had problems with quickloading; actors spawning without collision, meaning that you shot them and the bullets just hit the wall behind them. Even left marks :P To solve this, I wrote the mod in my signature :celebration:

Finally, I remember a Talon merc who found no shame in walking with his weapon two meters above his head, rotated in a weird angle. His fellow talons were fine of course :brokencomputer:

I've had Deathclaws suddenly shoot straight into the air for no apparent reason and disappear. The area north of the Reilly's Rangers compound is screwed up too, all the NPCs near that office building bounce up and down while walking in the area and so do I if I go over there and then crash.

I'm always a little perplexed about save game / mod conflicts.

Not to gloat, but I have a 26 lvl char that I've used to test "continuing" characters during FWE's development. I've had this one character going since about FWE 2.0, the save file is about 17mb. Furthermore, I don't use CASM and I quicksave/quickload all the time as well as use the default autosave settings. I get occasional crashes (which I attribute to the engine's overal unusual odd behvavior). I haven't had random glitches / reproduceable crashes, etc... except when I was running UF3P or failed to update MMM properly.

That said, my load order isn't super big. Mostly its just the FOIP mods plus a dozen other favorites, total mods is probably under 30. I also rarely install a mod and subsequently remove it from a character save I intend to continue using. I'll first check out of the mod, and if I like it, it tends to stay in place forever. If I don't like it, I revert back to a save from before the mod was loaded. I guess I'm paranoid about mods "leaving things" behind in my saves that might cause unexpected problems.

I have been adding/removing mods/updating all sorts of mods halfway through, so I'm pretty sure that's the cause of some of my issues. I just hope that this game can survive long enough for me to do all the DLCs, which is one of the few things I still haven't done with this character yet.

In Seward Square I once notice a bird WAY up in the air but it wasn't moving, I tried using the sniper rifle scope to see what it was, but even then it was so small i couldn't tell. So I used tcl to go up to the "bird" only to find out it was a car that was solid and i could even stand on it and look at the whole square. I never did figure out what caused the car to be that far up in the air, but it was always there whenever i returned to Seward Square. I recently reinstalled fallout and my mods and started a new game, once i get back there i will check on it, if it is still there i will take a pic.

Another thing, maybe just a random glitch unrelated to savegame corruption...

I fast travelled to the Scrapyard, and arrived. I was in third person, so I saw my character standing there. Then, out of freaking nowhere, an entire freaking intact BUS falls on top of me! :D

My savegame corruption always just goes straight to crashes on save
Very early in my mod-installing career, I started my game, fought my way to Rivet City, talked to Harkness and entered the Marketplace in broad daylight. Christie Young ran to meet me on the steps...spewing forth some of the most unladylike language. Everyone in the marketplace turned hostile and ran me out of town. I'd managed to install an esp into a doubled-up Data folder.

Random weird things: I have three doors to nowhere, I had an Outcast with four fully repaired Plasma Rifles in his inventory, I saw three Shakes the robot bartender in Tenpenny, and I once used the Groovatron to redress someone and when I took the clothing they were wearing, it multiplied into a few hundred sets. I sold them all and unloaded the mod a much wealthier wastelander.

I just had a group of super mutants stop attacking me, freezing in their place (though still technically hostile) and greeting me as I walked by (and shot them in the face of course. They didn't seem to care).

Did that kill you?
Is there any type of crushing damage in Fallout 3, anyway?

My save games tend to play up in strange ways a bit when they get over 8 megs. A supermutant in the mall who was killed by the bos rose up in the air, it looked like he was suspended by his hand on an invisible wire, he then proceeded to slowly fly towards the Lincoln memorial till he was out of sight. I took a screenshot of that one because I couldn't believe my eyes, it happened twice. Another time with the mmm skeleton decay, I get back to Rivet City after being away for a while and two Skelly's who used to be talon merc's are standing on top of one of the lights in the station carpark. Skeletons tend to get the shakes when they're not in the right place so they looked like they were waving.

I had one bug some time ago where the Supermutants along the way from Megaton to Rivet City did not spawn. I noticed it first at the building near the river past the Super Dupermart, then at the broken Building past the bridge. I was called away, so I saved standing in the middle of the Supermutant camp between the Jefferson Memorial and Rivet City. When I did load that save, my character was standing in the middle of a crowd of Supermutants, which is a bad spot to be for a level 1 character with Arwen's Tweaks and Martigen's Monster Mod. :ahhh:

I had updated MMM and ART shortly before, following the instructions, but I did reinstall Fallout 3 and all my mods, just to be sure.

Not to brag. The save I have been using is now 12.8mb works fine. Only thing I ever noticed is hearing double echo's on water dripping in a sewer area without water. I got past it and never happened again. I doubt its a glitch but a odd game mechanic. Sometimes I walk to fast down escalators and my character breaks a leg or two which pisses me off lol >_<

My current save is 11MB in size and I haven't had any weird issues. Yet.
One of my earlier characters took a trip to Canterbury Commons to do a quest and when she arrived no one was there. In the centre of town was this large square pit with a pool of water at the bottom. Looking down and all the townspeople were swimming in it. So, for fun I jumped in, too
That was just a mod thing. Something I'd installed recently. It wasn't even a mod that had anything to do with CC. Whatever it was didn't last long, anyway. Not many are permanent fixtures in my load order.
Back when Point Lookout first came out I accidentally had that loading before Broken Steel. That caused Fort Independence and most of Fairfax Ruins to vanish completely, due to a massive chunk of landscape just not being there. Switching those two DLC's around the other way and reloading fixed it.

I get the odd super-strong follower who can walk past a car and flip it into the air. I walk into one and I can't move it. I've also had the car or bus zooming across the sky, usually incoming, though once at L'Enfant Plaza a car was on fire and way way up in the sky. When it exploded it looked cool, then the parts rained down on us. I'm glad I can't be killed by a flying car part. I get hurt enough from skeletons lying on the floor. Annoying up at Clifftop Shacks as one shack has a room of them. I'd like a stick so I can poke them from a distance. I think it's just the room settling when the room or cell loads.

I'm not sure how this exactly happened, but I left one of FWE's new MP38's on my workbench in one save game, and later started a new game out of the blue.

So...I'm trekking my new toon home, get in the door, and lo and behold there sits an MP38 in the exact same spot, exact same condition. I pick it up, put it in a container. Save the game, load the older character and it's gone from the workbench.

I haven't been able to get that to happen any more. And I want it too!

I think I also have a chunk of terrain just outside Fairfax missing... One full cell, I guess. Not sure what happened, my DLC are in the right order.

My save is now 13MB (and 65 hours old), for some reason the filesize seems to be going up faster than usual now.
