Weird wind issues

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 12:35 am

So right now when I play, I get some very weird looping wind sounds. I have More Immersive Sounds [the Low Wind one], specifically I have the fixed version by Brumbek. I also have Natural Environments [fixed by Ryu Doppler], which includes Natural Weather. Along with that I have the OBSE Storms & Sound.

It's sort of like an ocean sound almost, very loud, and it takes over ALL the other sounds in the game. It started... hm. I think after I closed my last Oblivion gate maybe a day ago, while I was finishing up the very first part of Kvatch Rebuilt. [I'm just about to start the Spies in Bruma part of the Main quest as well]. Basically, it's the clear weather wind. I've tried going inside and then back out, hoping that loading a cell would do it, but it just gave me rain, and then when the rain cleared, it was back.

It drowns out horse hooves, bird song, and hovers in the background of conversations and the like. I would love to figure out how to stop it =__=

If I need to I can try to take a fraps video so the sound can be heard. It's as if the main wind got stuck at it's loudest point. Makes it real obnoxious to play. :/ {Tried Breaking Wind also which did nothing.]

Here's my load order: [Everything has been BOSS'd and BASH'd, and cleaned with TES4Edit]

I guess I know what you mean - "ocean sound" like soft waves breaking on gravel beach... Took me a while to sort that out - found it hugely annoying, too (& a little strange that no one seems to report that).
The culprit is several wind gust sounds, especially of the "forest" department (kind of "wind in leaves") in sound\fx\ambient\regions\wind. If you′re not using a sound overhaul mod like OSSO (which you didn′t mention), you have these files within your Oblivion - Sounds.bsa.
OSSO "improves" these as well, so for me with OSSO (which in general is a great mod & always on my list) that one issue became even worse. So I replaced several of the wind-/ windgust sounds from OSSO (which are overriding the vanilla ones - basically they ARE the vanilla ones, just tweaked) with silent files - those files that I could recognize instantly, because I knew them all too well from being annoying ingame. That would be the simplest method.

For me it went quite a bit further, for example, I′ve found quite a few other sounds too gentle & quiet, like the streaming water sounds. There′s other mods for that department as well, like the three-part "Ambient Sound Level"-mod. But that one did far too much regarding many sounds (it′s a very typical problem with many mods: many authors want their mod to be recognized and so their mods are too over the top), like roaring torch sounds - and worst of all, even the wind sounds (and basically each and every soundfile within the "ambient"-department) have been made (even) louder - which in case of many vanilla sounds resulted in heavy overdrive.

Basically, I ended up with unpacking both the Oblivion - Sounds.bsa and DLCShiveringIsles - Sounds.bsa, and made my own thing: I′ve replaced many sounds, using various sources like sound mods for Oblivion & Morrowind and quite a few other games (where the sound-folder very often had to be unpacked first). I worked a lot with Audacity, especially to adjust the volume of many sounds to make the faint ones louder (what "Ambient sound level" does, but with all sounds, also in cases where it′s absolutely NOT appropriate - as said, many Oblivion sounds are already very close to being overdriven), or to tune down others, or I combined various sound samples to create completely new sounds. That was a lot of work, because then there was also (for example) the Audia Arcanum sound overhaul, the Agar Varied spell sound mod and a few others to be reworked (magic sounds - quite a interesting field for sound crafting...).
Anyway, that was a LOT of work, but now at least sound-wise I′m quite content with my installation. That would be the long road. But as said, the simplest method would be to just use override sounds, like taking OSSO as a base, and then just to replace annoying sounds with silent files of the same name. As a silent sound file you could grab one from the many (quest-) mods which provide silent voice files. You could also take the silent file from Elys Universal Silent voice, but you need to transform it from MPEG3- into WAV-format. Just grab Audacity (freeware), load it, and save it again as .wav-file. Already there, you could use Audacity to rework your sound folder volume-wise. But once you′ve started with Audacity, you might getting into it, so be warned. What started small for me with the same issue you are experiencing, did cost me several weeks at the end :bonk: (not that it wasn′t well worth it...).

I had the same issue with MIS. It's great except for sometimes it would get stuck on a particular wind sound and play it over and over again, even with the Low Wind esp. I switched to http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=39804 and have not experienced this issue.

Taking care of my ears, I never even dared to try the non "-LowWind"- variant of MIS :bolt:

But SoC looks/sounds very good indeed & I recommend it as well, especially since you can add additional files so easily  , and specifically for certain situations/ locations. And it does tweak/ tune down the vanilla wind sounds as well? Because it doesn′t replace them, anyway...
