George Hayes
-Apartment-
“Did you hear me, there is a man dying in here!”
For once I had no jokes to say, no witty remarks, even though I've seen death before. Seen my friends torn to shred by shrapnel, seen the decapitated heads of gang members, death, I was use too. But a death of a friend you never get use to.
And even as I ripped apart the makeshift barricade, as tables and chairs were flung down the stairs, I knew it was too late. There is a sound to death, it is complete silence, listen carefully and you might here it. There is a presence to it to, you can feel it, the hair was sticking up on my arms and goosebumps on my flesh.
I ran down the hall, I could hear voices coming from the left, a locked door. I grabbed the handle and twisted it, locked.
“I'm going to break this damn door down if you don't let me in.”
No answer. My reluctance to admit to the fact that my long time friend had passed away just showed my stubborn nature. I broke the door, ripped it off it's hinges and sent it spinning across the room. I was in hunting mode, my pistol was out with out me realizing it.
A quick scan- An open window.
“Cowards!”
I was furious, what people abandon a fellow person in a time of needing, what twisted being was it? The world had been brought to an end and finally people's true colors were showing. I leaned my head out of the window and peered down the alleyway. They were running away but I caught a glimpse of the man in the lead.
He was handsome, no doubt at that, and young. Thirties at his earliest with smooth and flawless skin. He was wearing a set of combat armor so I couldn't see the rest of him, but I got the most important part, his face. He was in the shadows within a second and a second later his friend came running back.
I could not possibly chase after the armor-clad one, the obvious leader. But this one I could, I turned around walked down the stairs briskly, I could not waste time, I needed to go before I lost sight of him. I passed Steven on my way down, lay across the floor were I left him, the solider was gone.
Cowards. Every single one of them, is there no order any more?
I said a silent prayer as I walked away from his corpses, my anger overcoming my sorrow, I stepped through the window and back on to the hostile streets. My blood was pumping now, I wanted blood, I needed it.
If I stepped back a moment to think, maybe I would've have seen reality and saw that they were not to blame. But anger hooded my eyes and I followed behind the man, the finely dressed man. At one moment I thought I saw something glitter, like a badge, but I wasn't sure. He crossed the street where a boy was pulling a man out of a car, he took the car and drove down the street slowly do to rioters.
I would have to find a car and fast, I walked down the streets of disorder. Fire burned, people lay dying, cars crashed. Stab, gunshot, [censored], lynch, they were showing their true colors. I wanted to kill every single last one of them. They killed Steven.
An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
And then the world would finally have peace.
I noticed the car that crashed into a payphone, it's paint was fairly scratched up and it would do well with a new front bumper, but it was workable and unmistakable. We had just received papers earlier this week warning that this was the car that the infamous Donnie and Jackie pair had stolen. A short ways down the street I could see Donnie hanging from a lamppost.
Ironic, the scum doing justice.
He certainly wouldn't need the keys any longer so I liberated them from him. The car was in working order and purred to life with just one turn of the keys and then I nearly killed myself by hitting the gas without shifting gears.
God it's been long since I've driven one of these, with the price of fuel and all.
I managed to reverse and get it back onto the streets without throwing myself through the windshield, the sound of the engine acted like a beacon for mobs, I noticed a couple men turn to my direction. I stopped, got out, and shot three of them in the chest. Why? Kills ambition, if you let them start then they won't stop. Stop it before it starts.
Needless to say I wasn't bothered after that.
I drove slowly towards the direction of the airport, I could see the gray smudge of the car, I took out my binoculars and saw the man instantly spring forward. I smiled, it was just like hunting. My favorite book growing up had been The Most Dangerous Game and I couldn't help but think about it.
I saw a girl run up, possible asking for a ride. I could tell by the way she dressed that she was from Gomorrah's. My lip curled in hatred, I loathed Gomorrah's, the amount of calls we got for drug busts and violence? Just plain disgusting.
Though she did look pretty, even from this distance and the man looked clean cut and handsome.
For a moment reason spoke through, but then it was drowned by anger. They killed him. KILLED HIM. It acted like a wall keeping out any logic left in my brain and when they drove away, I followed. I made sure to keep my distance, they were always just barely visible.
When they stopped at the train station, I was watching from a mile away, my binoculars out. I couldn't exactly tell what they were talking about, but it seemed like pleasantries. Eventually they made up their mind and continued on.
I hoped they were leading me to the combat clad leader. But when they stopped at the Hoover Dam a little bit later, I was surprised to see the army lad greet them. The same one that left Steven on the floor of the apartment, my anger refilled, I kept close tabs from afar.
When the woman started undressing, I averted my eyes. Just because they were scum doesn't mean that I had to be, I was still a gentlemen. Three minutes later I resumed my watching she was leaning against the car, also watching.
There was no way she could see me with the naked eye, but as an extra precaution I shaded the lens so there was no glare. Eventually the two men returned from whatever they were doing and started up the car again. My targets had gone from one to three, getting answer would be harder now.
They drove to a fenced off area and I had to park my car a little ways back and walk a distance so they wouldn't see me. I climbed up a rock face and went prone to minimize the chance of them spotting me. They were messing with what appeared to be a normal hill, but when they went inside it, I realized it was a bunker.
I waited ten minutes before getting down and exploring the area, there appeared to be numerous bunkers hidden in the dirt. I explored two of them and realized that while you can go down into a basemant like area, they were blocked off from further exploration by high tech doors and terminals.
As it was getting late I decided to hide in the bunker farthest from them, hoping to get up early in the morning and resume spying. Then the rain started.
