After returning Harold's nod, Harlan once more turned his attention to Joe. He grinned, "Joe, I kinda pegged you for a ladies man when we met. You bein' extremely close with Celeste and all. If I was a bettin man, and I'm not, I'd guess you were defilin' her in the wee hours of the night, like she's your lover or somethin'. Then again though I wouldn't know, wouldn't put it past you though. Who knows, you two might not be somethin' soon enough. My son'll probably swoop her off her feet and hold her with love and respect, something you probably don't do."
Harlen nodded and went on his way, "Well you have a good night big man, keep the street safe."
The old bounty hunter strode away, looking pleased with himself. Joe glanced at the brute standing beside him, Harold was glaring at him again.
"Stupid old bastard," Joe said to Harold, "Probably senile, that or too many years out on bounties has baked his brain inside his head. That or he saw me speaking with Celeste and just assumed we were bumpin' uglies, y'know how these religious types are. "Defilin' her in the night"?" Joe chuckled and shook his head, as if dismissing the idea as absurd. "No Harold, sorry to disappoint, but you've got no reason to kill me today. The old man's full of [censored], but I'm sure you'll get his story when he goes with you and Pawnee."
This seemed to mollify the giant a little, he continued to glare at Joe, but the murderous glint was gone from his eye.
That was low you old bastard. Trying to provoke some kind of reaction from me in the street. But you're barking up the wrong tree there. It's kind of funny the way you tried to use Celeste to bait me there, if anything Junior would be doing me a favour if he took her off my hands. Plus, all you've got is a gut feeling old timer, no evidence. And sorry to say, I'm far to clever and I've been in this game far too long to fall for a trap that obvious. In fact, quite the opposite. I can use this to my advantage.
"Listen Harold, I'm going to do a lap of town, then stop off for some dinner. Why don't you go fetch those suits from the security shack and deliver them to Jimmy. It'll probably take a few trips, but once you're finished you can call it a night."
The big man stared at him for a few moments before silently nodding and walking away.
Ok, time to go lighten the load as it were. If I can pass her off to Rusty, then Colin and Harold don't need to know about what's happened between us. I won't have upset her by abandoning her or by breaking it off. And it's not like she'll say that she was with me the night before she got with Rusty, that kind of woman can get a reputation. So I doubt she'd spill. As for Rusty, well if he has more respect for her than his father does, then he won't say anything either. Don't want to be spreading rumors about your own girlfriend now do you Rusty. Rusty.... He doesn't get on with Harlan, I've heard them bickering in the diner, maybe I could use this too...
Joe strode into the diner, his face looking somber and a little hurt. He walked directly up to Celeste and took her hand. "Can we talk?" He asked, looking into her eyes.
Joe happened to glance up and spot Rusty lurking nearby. "You know, even though we don't know each other that well Rusty, I expected better from you. I thought maybe you were honourable enough to deal with things for yourself, instead of sending Daddy to tell me about your intentions to steal my lady. I guess it's a case of like father like son eh?"
He turned back to Celeste, smiling sheepishly. "Really sorry for that little outburst darlin, but... Well it isn't the best thing I've heard today. But listen Celeste, I've been thinking..." Joe paused for a moment, looking deeply into her eyes.
"Maybe it'd be for the best. I'm always busy around town, wheras I don't think I've seen Rusty leave once since he fell on his face outside. And well, if that's what you want, y'know a guy who'll follow you around all day. Well then you probably should be with him, he can give you a whole lot more attention than I can. You deserve that, I feel awful that I don't spend enough time with you, Rusty could be good for you. It isn't what I want, but," Joe paused and sighed, "but, well I love you Celeste and I only want you to be happy. If that means you being with him instead of me, well I'll just have to try to be happy for you. It's absolutely up to you." Joe offered her a weak smile, continuing to hold her hand.
That should do it. She'll go to Rusty, no hard feelings and no need for Harold to shoot anyone. And I might have sown a little discord between Harlan and Rusty into the bargain. I don't think that Junior will be too pleased that Daddy's telling people his business.
