Well I finally bought this :)

After playing Oblivion and playing Skyrim (currently), I finally decided to bite the bullet and pick up the Morrowind GOTY off from Amazon. The story, enviroment and freedom of the game sounds exactly like something I'd like to get a taste of. I'm still concerned that i will despise the combat but am willing to try it because of the deal I got on it.

Just though I would let you guys/gals know, that you have another Morrowind new player around and I will try not to ask all of the questions I've already seen answered.

I grew up with old RPGs and found the combat based on character skill the most normal thing in the world, and nearly all RPGs I had played before Morrowind lacked dodge/block animations, so combat in Morrowind didn't bother me in the slightest.

If you've never played a character-skill-based RPG (Oblivion and Skyrim have twitch-based combat), however, you'll probably need to acclimatize. The game's definitely worth it, but it all comes down to your playing style. And imagination.

EDIT: Nearly forgot. Welcome to Morrowind. :)

Just be sure to keep your fatigue bar high and combat won't be a problem. Feel free to drop by again to share your first impressions of the game. It's always fun to read. :)

But of course! :) I plan on making an evil Sorcerer. We'll see how it goes.

I always envy people that are able to roleplay evil characters. The best I can do is Chaotic Neutral, I think.

And now I want to get some D&D action, damn it!

Welcome, I started my first MW playthrough in previous year - I love the game so far compared to both Oblivion and especailly Skyrim.
I must admit, combat was difficult for me at the beginning.

Once your character has some meele skills under their belt, you don't notice the misses in your fights among the hits, as usually by that time, you've got multiple opponents after your skin.
Fighting your first mudcrab, rat or kwama forager though is a chore :P

Just roleplay that you've been drugged up from your boat trip, so can't hit anything :D

I tend to roleplay Lawful Evil at times. While I look out for myself first and foremost, I wont break the law because I respect power. I am honorable and keep my word, but its not my problem if somebody else is disadvantaged by something that helps me.

Just remember not to "spam" the attack button. Winding up for a full swing does the rated damage of the weapon, whereas just poking the button does the minimum rating. Unlike in OB, in MW your skills have no effect on damage done, only on the odds to hit, so you can actually HURT something badly at low level, IF you manage to hit it. As you gain skill, hitting becomes the norm. The game represents the "effect" of combat well, where you and your opponent would be probing for an opening while mainly protecting themselves, rather than trading "whacks", but displays it in an absolutely primitive manner.

Installed and started exploring and it is the GOTY edition by the way. Only installed Morrowind for now, though. Controls are something to get used to, but thats because I'm primarily a console gamer. So far, so good though.

I recommend that you install the expansions as well because they contain bugfixes and gameplay improvements, the journal is much more organised for example , and you don't need to visit either expansions until you are ready to.

Agreed on the fixes/improvements, but part of Tribunal might visit you. :P

Will do and thanks for the advice. Also I know what the Tribunal add-on does, hopefully it won't be too much of an issue.

If Icewind Dale 2 taught us anything, it's that we're all Neutral Evil, really.
