Hell, you wrote that whole thing, I felt like I was obligated to read it.
I can see what your saying, but I have to disagree. Perks could add so much, if they are implemented right. We may have lost mystisism, but the spells themselves are as far as we know still in game. And we're getting a few more spell effects on top of that. We can't make classes anymore. I still feel that the only thing we really lost is the ability to name it. We never were held to those classes really in the first place. The wall has finally fallen, and this could be ground breaking idea. Just writing it off as less rp and more mainstreem isn't even giving it a chance, and I feel almost insults the developers. I'm glad you still have faith, and I believe it is well founded. The people at Beth are not idiots. They'll try something, something huge. Is it a good idea? Hell, they said they don't even know. But the fact is they are brave enough to try. They look at their modding comunity, they learn.
Lets look at Halo and its makers. Even if you don't play any first person shooters, you still probably know the title. From Halo, to Halo Reach, what changed? The graffics got better, and they geared themselves to multiplayer. Thats all that really happened. And even if in a small way, they made classes. An rp element worked its way into even Halo.
The Elder Scrolls has changed so much in so many different ways. For better? In the end, I feel it was for the best. Because of their trials, the way they tried big new things that no one thought of, Skyrim will be better. For me, The Elder Scrolls has been trying to really grow. It didn't want to get into a rut that a first person shooter like Halo can so easily get stuck in. There will always be growing pains, but the fact remains that they are still growing.
Sure, Oblivion had its faults, its own growing pains. But it did many things right as well in my mind as well as the things it did wrong. Skyrim is just another ring in the tree that is Elder Scrolls. That ring may have scars, things that we may or may not like. But the tree will continue to grow. For better or worce? I dont know. But the fact that it is trying to grow. Its trying dangerous things, thats why I like it so much. It doesnt just give in and go with the mass because thats what the people wanted. It continues to reach for that blue sky. And in the end, I think everyone is just reaching for that same blue sky, in their own way. They put their two cents in, because they want the tree to continue to grow. They want the dead, or not that great things cut, so new things can then grow from those spots.
As long as Beth sticks to its guns and continue to grow, I'll be there with them.
