Werewolves almost an extinct species?

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Cure_for_Lycanthropy

"This is why the great crusades against lycanthropes led by those like (hunter's name) are ultimately futile, unless the families who carry this bloodline are exterminated as well."

And in Solshteim, when asked about werewolves, some people would say "I don't believe they exist. I mean I know they did at one point, but I've been told they have been hunted down to extinction"

So, lore is kind of vague on the popularity of werewolves and such. Does the Great Crusades against Lycanthropes have to do with their supposed extinction(Which we know it's not true since Bloodmoon had werewolves". And the time frame from "Daggerfall" to "Morrowind" was how long?

How can you tell one is a werewolf, if they look and smell just like you during the day? I could be that lycans are very good at hiding, and very good at blending in society (save for the full moon). Heck, the dunmer launched raids at vampires, and concluded that all the vampires in Vvardenfell are gone, yet there are plenty of vampires around.

Lycanthropes nevertheless have been hunted down. Daggerfall is a good example of this. As for the vampires, well, they have been slumbering for many years, that's why people seemed to miss them.

look how many lycanthropes of JUST ONE STRAIN were present in Bloodmoon. Imagine a village filled entirely with where-sharks. Nobody would know about each-other since the'y all disappear into the Ocean and east some random seal.

Lycanthropy Is hereditary.

I know it's hereditary. But I wanted to know the enormity of the Great Crusades.

It's conceivable to believe that they might've completely wiped out Tamrielic Werewolves at one point. Except all Hircine has to do is throw one of his Hounds back to Tamriel and they're back doing their thing.

Daggerfall is around 25 years before Morrowind.
Daggerfall took place in around 400 3E, and Morrowind was 427 3E, IIRC.

The emperor sure didn't age much in 30 years, by the way... although he did grow a full head of hair.

Daggerfall was 417, actually, and Morrowind was 427. So roughly 10 years, depending on how long it took your personal hero to complete the quests.

It's possible that during Oblivion lycanthrope numbers were at near-extinction levels (considering we don't see any) but the quest said "You may not be aware that lycanthropy is an hereditary condition, passed on in certain families, although it can lie dormant for generations before reappearing" so,maybe the disease deactivates at times of peace and reactivates at times of turmoil (the political turmoil in Daggerfall, the deal with Hircine in Bloodmoon, maybe an appearence in Skyrim after the 200 year gap of the fall of the Septim Empire)?Don't know how it would work though, maybe Hircine is just one evil guy? :P

Plus, its easier to destroy a group of people/a disease in a rich, civilized country than a poor one...

Ah, I just loaded up Daggerfall and had a look, and it doesn't tell you the year on the travel or information screen. No wonder I didn't know it.
I suppose you got that date from "The Warp in The West", then? Or is there a way of seeing the year in-game that I'm unaware of?

hm... It just occurred to me that you could have a character in Daggerfall who takes more than 10 years to complete the MQ. So in your personal continuity, the Warp in the West might happen AFTER the events of Morrowind. I love this series.

I got it from TIL's timeline :P 417 is confirmed as the date of the Miracle of Peace in the PGE3 and in the Warp in the West.

I'm thinking of naming one of the tracks on my band's demo "The Miracle Of Peace", because that always sounded so bad [spotted owl] to me for some reason.

It's gotta involve a giant robot(s) somehow then.

The impression I've gotten from pretty much every single game I've seen in the series isn't that they're almost extinct so much as that they've just always been an extremely rare species to begin with. The disease isn't especially contagious and isn't likely to be transferred in a single bite (or even a series of bites), and lycanthropes don't seem to bother attacking people unless they're attacking them with the intent to kill them and sate their urges. Basically, the odds of surviving a lycanthrope attack (where the creature is pretty much invariably trying to kill you) AND being infected by the lycanthrope are next to nil, so they're going to be pretty rare in just about any case. The games seem to match this, too - I think I remember them being mentioned in Arena but as far as I know there are no lycanthropes in that game, in Daggerfall encounters with them were pretty rare, and in Morrowind... well, outside of the main quest finding a werewolf was pretty frustrating.
