Werewolves are overrated!

Post » Thu Jun 10, 2010 1:29 pm

Whether it's a question for Todd, a topic on the forums or an article in a magazine, it's all about werewolves. Haven't you noticed there are other kinds of werebeasts as well? The TES lore has many of them, from werebears and wereboars, present in Daggerfall, to weresharks! Still, whenever there's something to do with werebeasts, people discuss werewolves. In fact, it seems there's a huge love affair with werewolves and vampires, so I'm starting to think too many have seen Twilight, a movie that makes me want to puke...

Anyway, I think the other werebeasts that could be in Skyrim, like werebears and wereboars, werebears above all, deserve more time in the limelight. I've seen people regarding lycanthropes as werebeasts, some even wishing for werebears, but it seems the werebears and wereboars are threatened beings.

So, do you agree werewolves and vampires are overrated? Of course they should both be in Skyrim, since vampires have been in all TES games, and werewolves in Bloodmoon. But isn't it cooler to have something unique to the TES instead of just werewolves and vampires like every other fantasy game series?

Edit: Forget about the Twilight reference, it's just a joke and people seem to be taking it too seriously.

Don't care
Don't care
Don't care

Werewolves/Vampires have only been a small part of the previous two TES games, I'll be fine if that's the case with Skyrim.

How about editing that last question so it actually has the answers "Yes, they are" and "No, they aren't"? And the second question so that answering with "they should be considered, but not more or less than werewolves" is possible?

Currently, that's a very biased poll.

By the way, your premise is flawed. The question directed at Todd specifically asked about "shapeshifting", and gave werewolves as an example.

No, giant CGI dogs are overrated. Awesome werebeasts are not.

I say this, werewolves are common in EVERY province. So they make sense to be anywhere. Werebears are the ones that are native to Skyrim. So, if anything we should see both. It doesn't have to be a either or situation.

Oh by the way it was WereWOLVES and Wereboars that were in Daggerfall. Werebears are only mentioned in the book ''On Lycanthropy" And if you want to stick the the lore as you suggest wereboars should not be in Skyrim. As they are only known to be in the high climates of High Rock and Hammerfell.

I didn't vote because the poll svcks.

Just because something is "in the lore" doesn't mean it has to be added, and I don't see why you're so against werewolves just because they're the favored werebeast. No one expects to turn into a wereshark, that would be ridiculous. Werewolves are so popular because they're the most popular in the real world. Leave Twilight out of this, it has absolutely nothing to do with it. Werewolves have been popular since The Wolf Man and probably years and years before that. They were also available in Bloodmoon, so of course people want to see the return of features that were fun in previous games.

Anyone remember Carebares and their alternatives werebears..
Everytime I see these threads makes me wish for those to be in game.

However I like lycanthropy lore, sod Twilight and even True blood.
Skyrim is its own beast and whatever creatures are in will most likely be so too.

I'm just saying it's a shame people seem to have forgotten the other ones. And weresharks won't/shouldn't even be in Skyrim anyway. As I said, the Twilight reference was a joke, tongue in cheek you know?

That sentence is easy to misunderstand, I'll modify it. And you're right about the wereboars, but who knows? It's 200 years later and things may have changed. They weren't too far away from Skyrim to start with anyway, and Skyrim seems likely to have boars.

I don't think it's surprising that more people are interested in werewolves. Werebears seem to be somewhere in that middle area where they're not rare enough to be unique but not common enough to be iconic.

I like werebeasts and don′t think they′re overrated at all.
It really depends on how they add it to make the gameplay more interesting.
If they put them just for the sake of having them I really don′t care if they′re in or not...

The most interesting thing to happen to werewolves and vampires in the last 30 years was by far Underworld's premise of siblings immortal. I will however say that Twilight's premise of werewolves as existing to kill vampires is interesting but being formatted for tweens is a story killer for me at 35.

Edit: didn't the GI article say something about wereyetis?

No it said no thing of the sort. However people did fly into wild speculation and assume that the frost troll screenshot that's getting blasted with a firespell was a wereyeti.... :glare:

I have to admit I like underworlds lore, and the films as well.
Twilight I've never watched so I show myself to be a hypocrite in my post, I meant more to say the second part that TeS will do its own thing.
If skyrim was to put more horror than fantasy in its style ( not that it should ), I'd hope for a ravenloft feel tbh.
Lots of dark twisted family history combined with power struggles and mental torments.

Werewolves deserve their spot. They are the ultimate werecreature. Werebears? wereboars? werevultures? It's ridiculous to know such things even exist in ES lore. Werewolves will always be a fan favorite, but I hope they add werebears just to calm people down. Face it, werewolves are the original Beast. Hell, even Hircine favors werewolves over other werecreatures.

That's why they deserve an expansion. After the boring AI, the magic and the dumb factions, make an expansion just for werewolves. Frankly, I could care less of Dragon-born and the MQ. Just give me something to turn into.

Hopefully, all of those things above become a failure. Ha.
