Well, it's based off that movie. The show seems to revolve more around what's going on with the Androids. I thought the first episode was interesting! Reminded me of a buggy Bethesda game, lol! Soundtrack is cool too.

I was interested in it until I found out it is HBO Canada and JJ Abrams is behind it.

It is an American show. Filmed in America. Created by a Brit.

HBO Canada just distributes it in Canada.

(Also, many great shows/films are filmed in Canada. Probably many that you like.)

I haven't seen it yet. I've read reviews and heard the thoughts of friends on the show...so far the responses I've heard have been pretty mixed. One thing that much of what I've heard has in common is the sentiment that the presentation is great, but the story lacks direction...like they can't commit to any core themes, so they just touch on many vague ones. Also, that [censored] and violence are overused for shock value. Again, I haven't seen it, so I can't judge for myself yet.

Edit:

Hrm...that word is censored, I guess. How about, "brutality against women," then?

Yes I know but I do not have HBO Canada. I meant since it is on HBO Canada. I am a slow typer since I have arthritis and sometimes I miss a word since I am thinking of the next word already.

I haven't watched it yet, but it's on my list.

I'll see if the good reviews continue through the whole season.

The old movies were pretty cool. (at least the first one, can't really remember the sequel)

Ah, that makes sense :)

Loved the first episode. There's definitely violence, including of the against-women variety, but I don't think it's out of place in the theme or setting. Definitely nothing GoT level.

I don't know if it's available in Canada, but HBO NOW is a great alternative to having cable.

It is through HBO Canada.

I have free Cable due to it being part of the rent. HBO Canada is not part of the cable package I have and I do not want to pay extra since I do not watch that much TV, except for Sports, News and maybe some Turner Movie Classics since I prefer movies that are older than me.

Futureworld and if youve seen it you know the outcome, but if JJ Abram has anything to do with it, then he'll will have probably written one of his alternative universe stories, that tries to overide the original.

JJ Abrams is just a producer, he has nothing to do with the writing or direction. Jonathan Nolan is the head showrunner, and he also created the outstanding Person of Interest.

Anyways, I'm intrigued so far. Little slow start, but they had a lot to introduce, so it's understandable. Interested to see where they take it.

One of the things I liked most was the soundtrack. Blackhole Sun being played on a self playing piano and that awesomely epic "Westernized" instrumental version of Paint it Black during the "robbery" scene were the standouts, but I remember thinking the intro tune was good too.

I liked it, a couple comments made it sound like the aftermath of the movie. Never saw Futureworld, so I have n idea what happened after the original movie.

I'm really interested in watching the show further. It seems like a couple more philosophical themes are hinted at in the first episode, like the nature of personhood and sentience, and the nature of reality.

They are billing it as "The Next Game Of Thrones"...

So considering there are no swords and it's set in the future we can only presume Anthony Hopkins gets killed in the last episode.

Lol, nooooooo!! I wouldn't be surprised if it's sooner.

Spoiler
The guy is super sad in the show. Having drinks with one of the first Androids he made, making comments in a tired sounding attitude. Seemingly very world weary to me. Not to mention I bet his paycheck is astronomical. They'll be seeking to get rid of him ASAP, lol

Based on the tech they are using does the control room make any sense (they have a landscape map but their view is limited?)

I haven't watched the original film(?), but the first episode has me intrigued, if somewhat confused. As others have said, the presentation is breathtaking, but the philosophical themes are somewhat banol; what is sentience? What is reality?

I enjoy philosophical themes, but I'm going to be mighty annoyed if Westworld tentatively explores the same themes that have defined A.I and cognitive science for the past fifty years.

Aristotle hailed metaphysics as the highest of the sciences and this show is absolutely brilliant even if it's going over 3/4 of the audience's heads.

Sat with the head of security discussing how Arnold had created 40 narratives that allowed people to champion good and these were almost exclusively ignored.

That they had wagered on the result.

That our choices had driven Arnold mad.

You wonder is Anthony Hopkins God? Arnold the Devil?

While at the same time being pushed to consider if Hopkins is the devil all along.

How many people watching consider how entertaining it would be to [censored] and kill at our pleasure?

How many people watch in horror at the prospect that this could be accepted as entertainment.

It's both a fascinating introspection and exposee all at the same time.

(Metaphysics is essentially theology... religious discussions are a violation of the Forum Rules so make your observations but let's not try to debate them please)
