[Beta] Western Sky Mod

Post » Sat Jun 05, 2010 5:19 pm

Here's the beta version of my new sky/atmosphere mod:

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35497#fileanchor

I added a custom skydome, adjusted the exterior lighting, and recolored some landscape textures, with the aim of improving the atmosphere of the Mojave Wasteland.

So far, it only modifies the NVWastelandClear weather and imagespaces, but once I've progressed a bit further in the game, I'll add variations for Hoover Dam, the Strip, and so on.

Damn, that's some nice skies. Will you do a leg-breaking pitch-black night version for those of us who like ... well, actual nights? :D

The desert is actually rather bright at night. With nothing blocking light reflection, the stars are enough to see fairly clearly. And when the moon is out, it might as well be day.

Ayup, that would be the truth. Plus you don't have all that darned citified light pollution ruining your night eyes. I myself live about 40 miles outside the tri-cities area of Washington State in the Washington State desert (it's like the high desert in SoCal, Bakersfield area). Unless it is cloudy, night ain't so dark.

I lived in that area for a while and I don't remember it that way.

Way I remember it is utterly pitch-black once the sun goes down.

I quickly lost track of how many times I snagged my legs on the damn prickly pears going outside for a smoke, but my calves always looked like I'd been attacked by rabid animals. More so when taking trips in areas with zero light pollution.

I was trekking out into a small canyon out in the middle of nowhere hours from any towns last august and once the sun went down we were basically travelling blind. The only way to have a hope to see where you were was to open your eyes real wide and hope you see the fallen tree before you walk into it. (It didnt work. We hit the tress and everything and fell face-down on the ground with 90Lbs packs on our backs - not fun). I'd have loved to have moonlight that night :D

Might be because I sleep during the day most of the time and am awake most of the night. I guess my country eyes just can see better in the dark then you city boys ;)

You must have really bad sight at night then. I haven't been to the desert but when I was in Boy Scouts camping I didn't have a problem seeing at night in the middle of a forest far away from civilization unless I got into an area where the trees were too close together which blocked out the star and moon light. The only time I was ever in total pitch black was when I was hiking through the Ape Caves on Mount Saint Helens and my flash light went out after dropping behind the rest of my group.

PS. It is quite a bit darker when it is really cloudy but there is still enough residule light for your natural night vision to work.

New Vegas' lights would generate quite a bit of light pollution, actually... So considering the size of the map, a lot of that light would light up quite a bit of it at night.

Also, congrats on being my first NV mod :P A fine piece of work!

Ok, I've released a new version. It adds another sky texture for the Colorado River and Hoover Dam region-- sort of ominous approaching stormclouds.

Edit: Oh, and also: a darker nights variation.

Does it fix the cloud texture ending above the horizon line?

Yep- In fact, the skydome model now extends well below the horizon.
