[WIPz] Westly's Head Replacers (still working on a better ti

Post » Sat Apr 03, 2010 1:59 am

I thought I would go ahead and make a WIP thread for this, as it has been quite a while since my
last headpack thread was locked. This project seeks to replace most of the NPCs in Vvardenfell with
unique faces while still being compatible with any pluginless replacer that might be floating around or
yet to come. Many of the heads from my previous head packs will be recieving "face-lifts" (specifically
scheduled for drastic change are many of the tattooed Dunmer faces, my Breton females, Imperial females,
High Elves [male and female], and all of the Orc faces [will be come more "orcy"]). All of the previous
textures will see some form of change though. so if you have a real favourite, back that texture up as
a new file with its corresponding head). In addition to the new heads, there will also be many, many new
hairs (incorporating the Corean hairs as well as a great number hairs previously unreleased that I have
been converting and cobbling together like a mad man :D ).

Now, bear in mind, this is a long term project for me (two years working on it is seems). So do not expect
an overnight release as I want to get these just right.

ATM (or rather several months ago), I began working on the Redguard males that appear in Morrowind
(sans expansions). Here is a look at the heads that I have so far (but have many more waitng in the
wings to be cobbled). Many of these make use of previously unused head meshes that are, perhaps,
better suited for Redguards than I have used in my other packs:

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g235/Wesadam/Mod%20Head%20Packs/WAR_xRG_HDS_GRP1.jpg

I hope to keep working on this all the while I am making other mods. As I understand my limitations, though
, and for the sake of gettting the mod finished for all those who are waiting, I might be inclined to
recruit a team to take on some of the "work" (by dividing the heads up racially among the team with
one person focusing on a specific race rather than trying to bounce from race to race). This is just a
thought ATM, as right now I am probably not close to implement such a team effort (and am
happy to do most of the tedium myself right now, so no worries).

'Til Next Update (might be a while, though ;) )

UPDATE Tuesday, October 20, 2009
I am working on a pluginless replacer as a base ATM (that will stay very true to the look of the original heads, but at higher resolution with extra details added based on the "Original Heads Revamped" from my MHP, but taken to a better level). So, essentially, they are "REvamped-Revamped". I will release these in a modular fashion 'til all of the stock heads are replaced (including the expansions). Then I will bundle them all together in one download for eas of use and access. The heads, when finished, will be OK to use in mods :) .

First up, the Bretons (with the original Bethesda heads on the left for comparison):

UPDATE Friday, November 06, 2009
I am almost finished with the High Elves (the vampire heads are the only
thing left to cobble). Here are a few in-game pics of some of the High
Elf heads and hairs on respective NPCs:

Again, I used the original stock textures as a base for the
new versions; I gotta say, though, the original textures, by
themselves, look little like they do when they ended up on
the original meshes :).

UPDATE Wednesday, November 18, 2009
I started on the Orcs [Females] tonight (well most of the afternoon really while I was
waiting for a kiln to finish firing). With these, I had to basically start from scratch, using
the originals for inspiration (as to the placement of scars, highlights, etc). Ultimately,
though, these look like "my style" orcs (if that means anything), though still have the
intrinsic feel of the originals if one looks closely with an open nature without trying to be
too critical (as I like them, so surely others will as well). But don't worry, I'll do the same
for these as I did with the High Elves and relase the new textures on the original meshes
(for those that like their Orc females with and elongated/horsey-type face ;) ).

Anyway, here is a screen of the first Orc Female face:

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g235/Wesadam/Mod%20Head%20Packs/WAR_ORC_F01_1.jpg

Now that I more or less have all the base layers for the Orcs females, all of the Orc females
from my previous packs will recive makeovers (to give them a bit of gruffness overlayed ontop
of their femininity; beauty within the beast, if you will).

UPDATE Saturday, November 21, 2009
I have finished up the Orc heads to my satisfaction (mostly. I think). I still have the vampire heads
to address as well as the hair choices. I hope that I have these finished before next week
(if I do not it might be a while before I am able to finish due to the compounded Holiday Season).
Nevertheless, I will continue to do my best to get these released in a time appropriate manner :) .
That said, here is a look at the heads as well as the one hair that I have completed thus far:

Wow! These heads are amazing Westly! I have to say, I think that my favorite changes are the Orcish eyes and the Altmer male chins/face. Everything is exquisite! I hope I can still NINJA and PIRATE the early releases!

Keep up the good work Westly! :goodjob:

Yes (points to the screenies) ;)

Well, it has been a fairly smooth holiday thus far, so I am able to work on these a bit
here and there. With the full Holiday season 'round the corner, though, I am in overdrive
in my studio (filling a few custom orders and restocking my inventory), any updates will
be rather sporadic 'til the new year. That said, keep-a-lookout in this thread; there will
be upates although fewer/infrequent for the next month.

Wood Elves and Redguards next, then the Dark Elves and Imperials

Yay, I got half my wish! :D Makes sense to do the Dark Elves and Imperials last, since they seem to be the most ubiquitous races. And I'm confident that the plug-inless portion will be done before I get around to ordering W7 and re-installing Morrowind.?

With the Dark Elves and Imperials, I guess I am saving the "best" for last (as, not only being the
most numerous, they seem to be the more popular player races [aside from Nords; everyones a
Nord these days ;) ]).

Nothing to report, really, as this is just a humble attempt to check-in to reassure my commitment
to this project (despite my lack of productivity ATM).

Sorry this is a little off topic here but just a quick question... I've always loved your http://pnmedia.gamespy.com/planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/fms/images/mods/6173/1198957374_fullres.jpg heads because unlike all the other head packs out there, this one holds completely true to the origional feel of TES3. Fargoth looks like fargoth, jiub looks like jiub, etc. Have you ever released just a simple replacer using only these heads, if not do you plan on it? I don't need 10,000,000 player head options I just want to walk around morrowind and see the same old NPC's and not have them feel like new NPC's

It looks like you are trying to stay true to the old heads in this new mod you are making and they look great however when you change the basic shape of the head you change the head and many of the heads look like impersonators more then the old npcs. I really like the new textures on the old head models though. Most of the textures are spot on. A few are off, especially in the eyes. For instance with the http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g235/Wesadam/Mod%20Head%20Packs/ORCM_Before_After2.jpg. They eyes are different and change the face entirely.

Anyway just a thought! Keep up the good work! I love following your threads just to check out the pictures! :)

nice to meet you (virtually) Westly.

Let you know that one of your usual faces in Male Breton pack it became my usual face of chioice^^ and i like much this face, that usually mix with one of your hairs found in Hair pack I and II.

Yes, im quite content, but as Tiber Septim said in Daggerfall, "i have a smaller request".

I have liked much your short bearded males, but you havent did any blonde in your packs, only brown white and red bearded. Since i WAS blondhaired (in my youth, now im white/grayhaired) i liked some add in this pack:

1- some short beard blond to pair with your marine-like blond hairs, OR these hairs in grey/white version (you have made only blondie) to pair with the shorthaired face.

Can you do something for me?

The hairs i refer are the short square cutted like Marines, now are blonde with a nice white spray, but i will like a white/greysprayed version.

if you need, i will try to post some image for show hairs and head which i refer.

Thank you of all, and i will continue to use your good work for my characters, you do good.

The heads that I have released in this thread (by way of the previous thread) are versions
of the OHR heads (redone and at higher resolution). So see the DL links in the first post
so that you can make use of what you will :) .

It looks like you are trying to stay true to the old heads in this new mod you are
making and they look great however when you change the basic shape of the head
you change the head and many of the heads look like impersonators more then the

Anyway just a thought! Keep up the good work! I love following your threads just to check out the pictures! :)

The textures were never meant to be exact, but a mostly faithful interpreteation in my style.
I could reproduce them exactly at a new resoultion (as compared to the smudgy originals),
but then I really wouldn't be putting myself in the texture (so to speak). That particular Orc head
texture is not on the right mesh in my "after" screen (as explained previously in the last thread).
It looks a bit more like the original on the correct mesh, but it still retains the "my-style" quality which
I was after (thus, am happy with the results regardless).

Anyway, I am extremely busy in RL, so the spare few hours I get at night to make a texture here and
there is a sort of "live and let live" situation (as I could go on and on trying to get a texture just
right, but then nothing would ever be released).

Right now I am in my studio even more (more than full-time), so projects outside of my pottery
and sculpture have slowed enormously (and likewise the nature of what is created when I get the
chance).

No worries, though; I will keep on doing what I am doing with a glad heart (as I love to texture).
If the end product is then useful to other gamers, then my heart would be all the more glad :) .

@adventurous_pilgrim,
I am not really taking requests ATM, but I will see what I can work into my work flow in a natural
fashion for all to use (by way of blonde beads and what not); although, beard colour is not
necessarily determined by one's hair colour (I have sandy blonde hair with a red-brown beard).
I only say this as perhaps making do with one of the other bearded faces will have to be sufficient
'til I am able to make something better :) .

I would like to add that I think that (as far as the full replacer goes) I want to start with the "essential" NPCs
with specific textures only for them (well, at least as far as their faces are concerned). This means mostly
completely new textures not previously made in my other packs (I may use some of my older textures
as a base, but then add unique detailing for a specific NPC). This will, at the very least, cover the quest
NPCs (with the pluginless to cover everone else 'til I am able to make a more complete/comprehensive
replacer).

Well, back to my lunch and then its back to work I go

Uh Westly what exactly is it you do in RL? Do you have like an artist studio or something? beacuse I usually think of you and Fliggerty sitting in a huge studio surrounded with half finished models & scupltures (a la Leonardo da Vinici) :)

I do http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/Weslow/WesThrow.jpg... :D

Well, that and a great deal more (painting/illustration, sculpture), but that takes up a great amount of time ;) .

EDIT: I will add (to stay relevant) that I have finished up the Wood Elf heads, but have yet to tackle their hair options. I am in a firing cycle ATM, so I have a bit of down time to work a bit on them, but not enough time to format the screens for all you wonderful people to have with which to take a look. Hopefully sometime later this weekend I will be able to get some screenies taken for those who are curious as to the choices that I have made ;) .

Problem solved. I think all steamies should have a look at http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1060929 thread. Apparently the game was not detetecting Westly's textures because the original .bsa archives were modified later and by default the game is set to use newer data files. Actually I think it might even be worth putting some info on this into the readmes.

And thank you Westly! This replacer truly turns characters into... real people. I'm now falling in love with every Nord chick I meet. Hehe. :)
