Wet Shaders And Rain Collision

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 3:36 pm

I am assuming that Bethesda addressed the rain collision issue since base building is going to be a feature of the game and having rain pouring into your house would be a HUGE oversight. However, I didn't see any wet shaders in the few seconds that they show rain. I don't know if its because they didn't think to include them or because it was only light rain or the rain just started. If you played the STALKER games or Dying Light you know that wet shaders for the ground and objects add a great deal to the atmosphere of a stormy night. Yes its a little thing but if someone could confirm that they saw wet shaders on objects if they played a demo at E3 I would be much obliged. :D

I thought there were wet shaders on the power armour during the sequence where the player gets into it?

Although, there was something odd going on there, as it looked as if the appearance of the power armour changed during its animation... Maybe my imagination.

Oh sweet! Thanks for pointing that out. You are correct and I slowed it down frame by frame and I am pretty sure that I saw wet concrete as well when he was shooting at the deathclaw with the minigun. I was looking mostly at the scene where the blimp was going over head in the rain storm and didn't see anything on the statue. That could just be the angle or whatever but I am positive that I saw it in the scene you mentioned.

I did notice some kind of weird warping texture on the shoulder when he opened it up (not sure if that is what you are talking about) but I have to find a higher res video to see if that is just a texture glitch or something else.

I saw the same thing, it just looked like some shader weirdness on the underside/inside of the shoulder-piece. As for environmental wetness, I definitely saw that on the ground in the rainy Concord sequence, but it was subtle.

As for rain clipping through ceilings, the way he talks about weather and volumetric lighting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ty2hU0Y7kAg makes me optimistic. In prior games, their weather was just a series of effects on the screen (as opposed to precipitation in the game world with collision); it wasn't that big of an issue because Bethesda designed very few areas in the older games where you'd be under a ceiling in an exterior zone. The only places I can think of where it became noticeable and ugly were Vivec city in Morrowind, and some of the Nordic Towers or smaller ruins in Skyrim. But this game has a lot more stuff like dilapidated houses, custom-built settlements, and whatnot that aren't loaded in a separate interior cell, so I think Bethesda stepped up their game here. I hope I'm not wrong.

Yes, wet shaders. I want that for the body. Well I prefer more oiled up, because, taking pictures..

Well you know, there's just something about seeing certain parts of the body being all wet/oiled up. I'm sure modding will take care of this, however.

Todd Howard also said that the new version of the Creation Engine and Fallout 4 support Physically Based Rendering (PBR), which makes textures materials like cloth, metal, wood, etc look better.

Yes, this one agrees :D
Bethesda, we want, nay, demand beautiful, glistening oiled up bodies, with beads of moisture running down over their flesh. And hey, the clothing supposedly has physics this time!

Clothing with physics? This just keeps getting better. Now if only the hair had physics....

Fallout 4 also has hair physics if you look at the Bethesda E3 2015 YouTube video you can see the wife when she leans against the wall her hair slightly moves. You can hardly see the hair move, but it does move.

I saw the hint of hair physics, but what's this about clothing physics?

The ghoul getting lit up in the kill montage video had noticeable cloth physics. The woman's dress swaying as she ran to the vault from the reveal trailer also was physics based. There's more examples but I'm too tired to go find them.

I'd like to think they would have sorted out rain collision by now - it would be ridiculous if they haven't - but there sure didn't seem to be any in the gameplay footage. Namely when the player entered the Vertibird, and then walked briefly under shelter while firing the minigun. Did it look like the rain stopped to you? I can't be sure because it was so brief. If the rain just clips through everything as it did in past games I'll be extremely disappointed. The evidence of hair and cloth physics is exciting though.

I just hope the animation is not moving everything, that it is true physics.

I watched some footage from the new MGS5. The animations are really pretty, so are the physics.

From re-watching this interview [https://youtu.be/Ty2hU0Y7kAg?list=PLSHdOA4o6T_fdEQXP5sW2UHXx9kRgMzwQ] it cam across to me that they have been far more physical when it comes to to the weather systems in Fallout 4. Todd mentions that fogs are actual particles, I'm hoping this extends to rain. Either way it's still a huge step up from the overlay on the camera technique they've used up until this point.

The more I learn about this game, the more I want it. This thread is like a little checklist of things I didn't know I wanted to have in the game but there they (maybe) are. T-Minus too many days.....
