What abour REAL real-time gameplay ?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:20 am

Say I work from 9-5. I make it home by 6. I have dinner, and relax for another hour. Its about 7:30 to 7:45 now. Shops in game close at 8...

Maybe I want to roleplay a character that takes damage from sunlight, or maybe even doesn't regenerate mana at night. Options like this get tedious if I am forced to play only in a certian time frame because I have to work.

What happens when we wait? Time doesn't go forward 8 hours even though my character just slept for 8 hours?

This. Absolutely not. Never. No.

Interesting idea, but that's taking realism one step too far - gaming time shouldn't be constrained to RL time. Most of us either work 9-5, or are in school. So it's not an option really.

How about a slider instead? Weither you like 4:1, 3:1, or maybe even 5:1, you could choose that to start and you could tweek it as you play, if things don't feel right.

But ya, its a little extream. It even was like that for pokemon. I'd always get stuck with night pokemon, cause...you know, I do stuff in the day. Travel would also be a little off. With fast travel as it is, you could go from one side of Skyrim to the other countless times, and it would still be the same day.

Oblivions time scaling was fine. I wouldn't really change it for Skyrim but that's up to Bethesda. If they want to make changes to it then it's their decision

Bad idea. Hell for people who become vampires... I say change the time scale by a little bit, and add in some timed quests.

I didn't know what you meant the first time...I voted wrongly. All I have to say is that you should save that kind of stuff for when we have those controversial virtual reality machines where you spend your entire life inside one, interacting with real and virtually-fake people. C'mon man...we all have to eventually come back into the real world. You wish to spend your entire life in this game.

I would be happy if 15 minutes IRL was 1 hour in/game.

Current time scale is 24min = 1hour so what your suggesting would speed up in game time. It can stand to be slowed a bit but not to1:1.

The worst idea yet - and that says alot!

Motion controls currently hold that distinction.

It's a good thought, but ... it's a pretty big no to me. Here's why:
As a student, I want to be able to play the game fully without ruining my grades or my future.
As a human being, I would also like to sleep at night :P

Concerning time, I think that time went a bit fast in Oblivion though. Maybe change the time-scale a bit, which is no big problem, really.

This. In my opinion 24 hours in Skyrim just last 6 hours, so 15 minutes would be an in game hour...you can wait in any case for those who want to speed up but for those who want to enjoy a long day i think it would be a perfect ratio :)

I don't remember if Tamriel works on 24/7 time count but:

Skyrim will be scaled down. Just like Oblivion When you see a journal talking about days of walk until you see a *don't remeber* shaped rock (or a statue, something like that), and then head east for hours till you see a door, it's done in 10 IRL minutes.
But still takes a few IG hours.

As the Geographical aspect WILL be scaled down in Skyrim, the time also has to be. Doesn't makes sense if not.

Having longer day/night cycle would be better IMO, like 3 hour days. Problem with matching with real time is what happens when you "wait" ingame? Or how Immersive is it when you save and walk away from the game at noon and come back and its suddenly midnight?

The in game time has always been separate from RL, it should stay that way for lots of reasons. Id like longer days but I don't want to have the ingame time pass while I'm not playing.

I find it interesting but voted no, simply because of practical issues. It'd be more awesome if it was an optional feature though. Maybe a case for the modders if that's within reach :)

I say that reduce the speed of time from Oblivion by like 30-50% and it will be perfect.

No, but I would like to see the day/night cycle slowed down to half of Oblivion's speed.

i just want it real time but not based on your time. so then you could just use the wait feature.

I played various games in the past that made use of the machine's clock to adjust the time of the game's world.

For example at Star Wars: Rogue Squadron for the Gamecube there where some planets that the in-game's time was always the same with real worlds time.
That means when I played at morning it was morning in the game, when I played at noon it was noon in-game and when I played night it was night in-game.
But the game only made use of that feature for graphic representation and it didn't used it for gameplay.
At the other hand some Gameboy Pokemon games took that a step further.
There where some specific pokemons that where nocturnal and the player had to play the game at 2:00 to 5:00 the morning to catch those pokemons.

Would you like a feature like that to be implemented in Skyrim ?

Hell no! I'd like to actually have stores open occasionally, and my schedule is such that under your "mimic real world time" system I'd never see an open shop.

Second worst idea to date, beaten only by motion control.

Oblivion let you set the timescale to whatever you want. I see no reason to remove that ability in Skyrim.

Personally, I'd use a 12:1 timescale (2 real-time hours per in-game day).

Edit: I'd also like to register a formal protest against terrible poll options! Please exclude redundant options and include more exhaustive choices.

It should be toggleable!! Jk jk

It sounds like realtime would just be troublesome.

Agreed, there should be an automatic "other" option in every poll.

And no way, I work and often don't start playing on work days till after 7, even if I did not work and was home 24/7 still no, as I want to go sleep at some point. And even if I did not need sleep....well you get the point, no.

You'd only want something like this if you are what one of my friends calls a "no-lifer" and playing video games is all you do. As for the rest of us, we're lucky to be able to play 3h a day at most, and it's usually at the same time of day each time. And we want to experience night-time as well, so the time scaling is appropriate.
