What about Lockpick?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 6:58 am

So I have finally found out what a nerd I am, checking these forums everyday, putting Skyrim screenshots as my background. This is the most excited I have been about a game. Oblivion was my first, I know I know I never played Morrowind and I am a console gamer
I was surprised that I have not found a topic on lock pick yet. Oh well maybe nobody cares that much, but I do. Oblivion was easy once you got the Skeleton Key of course. But I liked what they did with Fallout 3 and the screwdriver mini-game. What would you like to see?

May start a flame war but I liked the OB lock picking mini game ( cue villagers with torches and pitchforks ) should have been harder though. And the Fallout one. Maybe I'm just a bit...you know, odd. Still can't understand that persuasion wheel thing, so maybe there's still hope.

I sort of liked the minigame in FO3, I just hope they improve it and have it more affected by character skill.

I very much prefer fallouts lokcpikcing.. I could see them do it with a pick and a thin dagger in the animation part of it rather then the screwdriver and bobby pins.

Well, in Morrowind it wasn't a minigame while in Oblivion that game was optional. I suppose having the option is vetter than not having. By the way, how was the FO3 lockpicking minigame?

I played both Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3. Oblivion's lockpicking system was tedious at best and it the skill felt pointless as you could unlock any lock at level 1 if you were patient enough. Almost the same with Fallout 3. Morrowind was perhaps more realistic as it was based purely on character skill. But it was dull as hell.

I want a minigame that is fun to play, challenging at times but not always. And of course some locks that are so out of my range that I would never be able to lockpick them.

But, I have a hunch that Sneak and Lockpick might be melded together into one skill... just a hunch.

Oblivion's lock picking was ridiculous. It makes no sense that your character, having no skill and experience in lock picking should be able to do a very hard lock in one shot easily.

I liked Fallout's system a lot, but it wouldn't make any sense in the TES universe. Also, I loved try to lockpick people in Morrowind...

Haha yea I think sometimes (actually a lot of the time) people choose morrowind over anything related to oblivion because its the "cool" thing to do.

I would personally prefer something totally different. I felt like Oblivion's was to easy, but Fallout's might as well have been Morrowind's because it came down to just guessing. It they could come up with a scheme like left stick for torque, and then using the right stick to control the pick so that you would have to put pressure on the lock because otherwise the pins will just fall back down, but if you put too much pressure you would jam them and pushing up with the pick wouldn't move them. I am really not sure how something like that would translate to mouse/keyboard but I think it would be a much more rewarding process.

Ok the fallout lockpicking is yiu see the keyhole and move a bobbypin around and try to turn the key with a screwdriver.. the pin will jiglle and flex if your in the erong spot.. it jiggles and flexes less the closer to the right spot you are.

BUT you cant even try to pick a lock unless you have enough skill to try.. like you need 25 skill to pick easy locks 0 for very easy and 100 for very hard.

Not a perfect system but not bad and not annoying.

I wonder if Security was one of the removed skills. Anyway in Fallout 3 it felt like I was really picking a lock, OB was cool because you can try to pick a lock no matter what your skill was. How about an option to just kick down doors? That would be crazy.

Oblivion's lockpicking system was terrible, I could pick ANY lock at level 1 because it's piss easy to do so. The only way I'd like the minigame was if there was a restriction on lockpicking depending on your lockpicking skill (you can't attempt to open hard locks if your security skill was at level 5).

Basically MW + Ob's system put together.

Oblivions system was just ridiculous on PC. Worked pretty good on console though.
Morrowinds relied on your characters skill instead of your own which makes it the most RPG-ish system.
Fallout 3/NV was pretty good and they skipped the difficult vs skill problem by having you only able to attempt to open a lock if your skill was high enough.

I'd like to see some sort of mix between Fallouts and Morrowinds system.

as long as I don't feel like I'm stabbing the lock to unlock it, it's gonna be good for me

I think Morrowind was much better than Oblivion in many many ways, but I would prefer Oblivions lock picking over Morrowinds.

I'd like to see a lockpicking system where the whole process takes place in real time (instead of paused, like Oblivion). The worse your skill, the longer it takes (and possibly the more noise you make). This would obviate the need for "You must have 75 skill to pick this lock" immersion-breakers. If you are really poor and the lock is very hard, it might take you over a minute but you should still be able to get it open (assuming guards or monsters don't interrupt you).

Edit: Oh, and NO PROGRESS BARS! I hate them, they ruin immersion. :verymad:

I'd like to keep Oblivion lockpicking, where you actually have to do something over than hitting the attack button with a lockpick as a weapon.... Also, it would be nice if the world didn't pause while you were doing it.

Oblivion's lock-picking system made no sense? You've got a better chance unlocking a 5 pin lock with no experience than you do by stabbing the box repeatedly until the lock opens...

If there a mini-game I hope it's optional. I'm hopeless at hand-eye stuff on the computer.

I'm voting the FO3 system. Takes the specific level requirements of Morrowind with the minigame.
