What about new raiders and mercenaries in Boston?

Post » Sun Mar 20, 2016 2:57 am

About mercenaries and raiders. I wonder why there are so few variations.

In the game we only have generic raiders and the Gunners. Why can not we have more raiders and mercenaries who control the city and every time we travel, we find war zones between the gangs. I think it would be more immersive. It would add a greater challenge in exploring Boston.

For raiders and mercenaries, I would have a few suggestions.

The raiders are struggling to survive, and then we see a "homemade" equipment.

So I wonder how it would be if some of them have some "variations" as a gang:

Fanatics of the pre war or the "Lords": unlike all other raiders, have a good taste for the elegance of the past, but who are "adapted" to their needs of raider, and often their armor have a bulletproof vest equipped. And some members were formally part of Triggerman. But in most of the cases they are bounty hunters.

Their weapons would include: revolvers, shotguns and sniper rifles.

Dunwich Cultists: their appearance would make them seem like strange druids with long blacks clothes and strange metal masks or even bones, used for their rituals. Often they use wild ghouls as "watchdogs" and often are "equipped" with knives tied to their arms and metal masks that cover only part of their face, and they are wrapped in a black robe. And in rare cases even Yao Guai or Deathclaws!

In fighting the cultists use daggers for rituals; flame throwers, laser rifles incendiary grenades, and incendiary guns

Warmongers: they are equipped with heavy equipment, which includes: metal armor or power armor. Their style is reminiscent of a mix between the Roman, German and Viking style; often accompanied with war trophies or "medals".

As weapons, they would have supplied different minigun, rocket launchers, assault rifles, shotguns, and in rare cases even a fatman.

And since they are very "powerful" with equipment, they captured and subdued some super mutants to use them as cannon fodder in their raids.

And now let's talk about the Mercenaries:

Silver Ghosts: they are silent mercenaries. They included black and black gas masks suits. Their use of the old pre-war technology of camouflage; ranging from Stealth Boy to the Chinese stealth suits. They fight with silenced weapons, and many of their robots can go into stealth mode during combat.

Omega Legion: unlike ordinary mercenaries, this group has formed a strong passion for the energy weapons and power armors; as well as for science fiction and superheroes from the pre war era (yeah they are huge nerd). Also they managed to capture and to convert some synths, of the first and second generation. But are dressed as if they were the road warriors. Or other times as normal henchmen, or even with a power armor. And at every sentence, they pronounce quotes from the pre-war comics, tv series and movies.

Bombers: the particularity of these mercenaries is to blow up all enemies with explosives. And to avoid any major problems with the "side effects" of their damage, they are heavily equipped to protect themselves by their own explosions. And since they love strongly; the explosions, their armor are often colored yellow, red or brown. And like all the other mercenaries wear special power armor specially modified by them to "reduce" the explosive damage.

As equipment; The Bombers have several weapons and explosives, ranging from simple grenades, missile launchers up to the Fat Man. But it would be interesting to see a few grenade launcher in the game.

Well, that's all. If you have any suggestions you too, you're welcome. It would be really nice to see new gangs to fight in Boston. And not just in the next DLC as Far Harbor.

Well what do you think about folks?

Because raiders are to disorganized to be any major distinct groups, as for Mercs, I'm sure there has been other Mercs, its just that gunners are so ruthless by the time the player is around the gunners has...well gunned down there competitors.

Well, generic or lower raiders. That populate the entire Boston. I think it would be possible to find other groups. Many of which are more dangerous than normal raider encountered so far. And I think that would be "immersive"

I agree with more variation - That was somthing I appreciated in New Vegas. One of the raider gangs were even joinable.

I personally like your Dunwich Cult idea. Reminds me of The Children from FO1

Eheh thank you ;D

I admit i take a little inspiration from them. I really like to see more cultist like them in the Fallout games. Not as generic psychos. But more dark, evil and "not of this world"

Technically speaking there already exists different raider groups. You pick up stories on terminals about this group stealing from that group or another group stealing members from this other group. But they all fall prey to general raider syndrome and the conflicts are never expanded beyond terminal stories that I know of.

But the problem is: they looks too much generic. We don't find the name of the gang and uniform of their gang. Only a generic raider armor and sometimes other clothes,

Gotta love how those stories make you feel bad for the gang you just slaughtered. "I'm gonna go save my sister today!" Well, not now, cuz I just killed you, so....

Don't feel too bad. Turns out if you find the other end of the story there wasn't gonna be any saving done anyway.

That's because bethesda considers the raiders as generic bandits

Its actually more do to the fact that its illogical and unreasonable that most of these groups would form highly specialized forms of dress and manner when they all do basically the same thing.

Such levels of specialty and identity are only formed by far larger and more organized factions like the BoS, NCR, Legion, etc. etc.

not necessarily must be a main faction of the game. But only of secondary enemies. Maybe involved in side quests, not necessarily have to be major. They exist because they want to survive. Or because they want to expand their borders by making war against the other gangs.

And they can do all those things without having to adopt some kind of "uniform"

But again, such low level and disorganized groups wouldn't form such highly individual groups as you proposed in the OP.

The differences would be the minor ones we see in-game, such as how Judge Zeller's group of raiders all sign blood oaths to him, or how all the raiders in the Quincy quarries are ghouls due to the radiation of the area.

There is already plenty of variety in game it really doesn't need anymore.

Raiders

Gunners

Triggermen

Children of Atom

Forged

Remember Fallout New Vegas?

Powder Gangers, Great Khans and Fiends are a good example

Raiders are not a real faction you know? Just generic thugs and criminals.

Gunners are a good mercenary group, but i would like to see more, than only their group.

Triggermen are criminals, not a real raider group. Basically they are gangsters.

Children of Atom are only fanatics but not raiders

Forged are the only first real variation of raiders in this game

This: they are all raiders but they have their group names, their combat styles and their uniforms as a meaning of belonging to that group.

And above all: they are organized, unlike the common raiders in Boston.

And there are "organized" groups in Boston too, its just that they are more realistically subtle, unable to magically copy/paste a "uniform" upon there members.
