What about seasons?

Post » Sun Aug 14, 2011 12:25 pm

Just wondering. Sure in OB there were months and years, but the weather didn't really change at different times of the year. For example it only snowed up towards the northern regions. No matter what time of year the trees never changed color and it never snowed anywhere else. Now this may be pushing the limits a little as to how far Skyrim can go but I think this would be a neat feature. I do remember them saying that in Skyrim, when it snows the ground will gradually become covered in it, but I don't know if that's for certain areas or all of Skyrim. Just a Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, feature would be nice to see in Skyrim or future TES titles.

Changing seasons was in Arena and Daggerfall. I wouldn't count on things that have been in previous games and since removed ever making a return.

Ah ok. My mistake. Sorry, I never played either of those. I guess I should have looked it up first... :(

Meh, i would love a return of the seasons. Sure, a winterwonderland is great, but it would add realism if there were more snow in the "winter" months and less so in the summer time :P

I can see seasons maybe next gen but now I don't think so. They would be cool though. Like in winter everything is cold, then in spring stuff starts melting and growing, etc.

The problem with seasons is that not very many people would take notice of them. A lot of people who play Skyrim probably won't spend a whole in-game year with one character.

That said, I'd still love to see them added in.

Since Shivering Isles had the whole mania/dementia theme, perhaps there could be a seasonally themed expansion for Skyrim. Maybe the weather could be all out of whack or something.

Not to derail Daggerfall, best TES imo, but hat's because it's a lot harder to have and make each distinct area look meaningfully good with different seasons as the bars been raised in that area.

And things would have to make sense such as plants dieing off depending on the season, drought if it's summer and the area gets too hot, etc.

A lot of work.

I read somewhere that seasons aren't going to happen. Based on the information we have about the various regions and their diversity, though, it shouldn't really be an issue. You want winter, go north. Fall? Go south east. Spring? Go southwest or central. Maybe.

Summer? Go back to Cyrodiil. :obliviongate:

Seasons would involve actually changing the landscape and flora back and forth. It would also mean changing the habits of NPCs - farmers would go off to hunt in winter instead of plowing and so on. I'd imagine that takes up a lot more processing power and raises specs. Maybe in a future game they can have an option you can toggle. Seems like too much work for too little reward at this point.

There are seasons. There's just no noticeable difference in them in-game. :P

I am pretty sure Todd said that the trees don't change...something in relation to the region that has the autumn look. Unfortunately I don't have the source, but I think it was one of those earlier gameinformer audio interviews.

I would be perfectly happy if all seasons did was change the lighting cycles, and mechanics in the game to actually drive time forwards. It's pointless if you always play through the game during two or three months. But yeah, I'd like seasons like that and holidays to go with it. For those that "makes a choice on when", choosing when to become a vampire could have meaning to the game. I really wouldn't want to be one during the summer ;)

For comparison: Arma2/OA has seasons according to island location lat/lon, moon phases, but all it affects is the lighting. I think it also have tidal waves caused by the moon (I know it had in Arma1). FSX has seasons that affect textures, but I don't think that would look too nice in Skyrim.

Maybe some day. But I don't think Skyrim will be it.

if they added seasons to the game, i would expect there to be some correlation to the 20 hours of daylight during the alaskan summers, and during winter, 20 hours of darkness, or something cool like that, but not expecting it at all

Pretty sure I've read a developer say that there are no seasonal changes. The only thing that bothers me about that is the "autumn forest" region. It's going to be a bit strange to see trees with brown leaves that never fall throughout the entire year. Hopefully a mod fixes that.

One of the early weather mods for Oblivion added seasons, it worked realy well. in the month of Rainsfall (or what ever it was called) it was raining 80% of the time and in the winter it often snowed. It worked well.
