What about that dialogue system ?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 2:17 am

So, either the gameplay videos are not representative or a modder is going to have a lot work to do.

This is supposed to be a rpg, and there are good reasons to text boxes. Just release the appropriate devkit.

btw-Voice acting is supposed to happen in your imagination.

I don't see why that should always be the case, but I'm not optimistic for the male SS's dialogue from what we've seen.

I honestly like having a voice protaganist and being silent the same, They both have their disadvantages/advantages. I wouldnt wory to much about though, The first mod somebody will make is a silent protag.

Aren't there a couple dozen topics about this already? I've been playing Deus Ex:HR for the last couple of days and the 4-choice dialogue system works really well on it so I don't see why it wouldn't work for Fallout. It's just fear of change that people are dealing with. Text box was [censored] in Skyrim, highlighting the choice worked erratically and I can't even count how many times it caused me to say the [censored] wrong thing! I welcome the change with open arms! And same for voice acting, just turn off sound when in dialogue if you don't like it.

No need for a devkit then. Simply turn down the voice volume slider and your voice acting will happen in your imagination as it supposed to for you.

Is that how it works? I guess every rpg I've played that had voice acting wasn't an rpg at all because I couldn't make the voices in my head. That, or I have the advantage of not having a cripplingly narrow view of these things.

The dialogue system actually looks to be highly intuitive. We select the type of response we want from the following:

Y Ask for more information

X Deny or avoid answer

A Positive/friendly response

B Negative/hostile response

The choices shown above may vary if, for example, we ask for more information. This may then lead to a choice of three different topics, along with the usual 'talk about something else' option. Each available selection gives us an idea as to the content of the spoken dialogue, which makes perfect sense. If we were given the full voiced line to read out in our head, only to hear it spoken in full for a second time, it would soon become monotonous. Having an outline allows us to enjoy the dialogue more fully, and the fact that each line is voiced allows for a great deal more emotional content.

I'm quite sure that if previous games in the series had worked this way, nobody would be complaining about it, or suggesting that we should have a silent protagonist.

I think he means the acting of the main protagonist. I have issues with that as well, because of every thing you say you have it in your head, how it is supposed to sound, tone-wise. With a voice-actor he might not always use the same tone you would have, some interpretations of text are ambiguous.

This is a gripe I have with the dialogue system. Since we only have small scraps of text that we have to extract the meaning from, we do not know what really will be said. Usually it will work alright, but sometimes it might have consequences. I had this issue a few times with the Mass Effect series. I ran into some guy that was really aggressive and the options were basically the following:

1. You looking at me, pal?

2. Uh, sorry I will walk away.

3. Think this trough!

So I am a rational character and chose the third option, figuring he would say something like: "Think about what could happen if we sort this out the hard way." in a diplomatic tone. Instead he said something along the lines of: "Use your head for thinking, moron!" which resulted in violence of course.

Just having keywords has another disadvantage. With your answer written out and you having to read before you decide, you might gain information that was not clear to you before. With only keywords you do not have additional information before you answer. Also you might not fully listen to your own answer and miss something. Happens rarely, of course, but is a thing. Then again only having keywords, if they are chosen well, can really help bring out the essence of answers, so this is an advantage. However I doubt Bethesda can be 100% right, if even Bioware can not fully handle this feature.

Generally, in a game where we usually have a blank character to start with, i.e. Fallout/Skyrim etc. I rather have no main protagonist voice actor, in a game like the Witcher where we play someone else, a rather colourful person I am all for voice-acting. Now there is nothing I can do about it, I just hope that the voice-actor with both audios (german and english) is good enough and meets my needs in conversations.

I wonder if there will be a voice slider. . if there is would it also turn down the sounds that happen when you get injured?

In reality all the past Fallout games have had voiced main characters for sound effects like breathing and pain sounds. I guess people don't really notice those as much or something.

Why would Deus ex apply to Fallout ?

I dont know rpgs with a voice acting protagonist.

I really cannot make a guess how a interesting, complex, extensive dialogue ist possible if there a 4 short answers after every turn.

Im going to stop reason here because I didnt actually see the whole game for myself yet.

Ever hear the word "example"? Both are RPGs with lots of dialogue.

Right now we've reached what I like to call the "too bad, so sad" phase of development. The game is complete, has gone gold... meaning it's being printed to disks as I type this. Also, "voice acting is supposed to happen in your head".... yeaaa, no. Voice acting has been the standard for most videogames for quite some time now.

In these days when developers like to serve the simple-temper-people, its happening that good interesting games that need your commitment get degraded to silly crap that doenst ask for your attention at all. You know this happened to old games and is still happening. So in these days Im very attentive and maybe paranoid to changes on beloved games.

Doesn't have to cumbersome at all on PC. Y,X,A,B would simply be replaced with W,A,S,D.

EDIT: given the fact that we can walk around during dialogue, this may instead be assigned to the arrow keys. Either that, or there would be a toggle used to activate or deactivate 'dialogue mode'. Whichever method has been used, I'm confident the devs will have incorporated a system that feels natural without having to look down at the keyboard all the time.

I'm a mixed bag on this. While I actually dont mind the voice actor, I actually do like his voice, I dont like how they've done the dialogue options. It's basically shorthand that your going to have to guess the outcome of your choice on.

What would be nice, and I feel the modding community should push for if its not going to be easily accessible to us anyway, is the release of the pc actor transcripts. So a mod can be made that would give us the whole dialogue or at least a clearer idea of what it will be.

There surely is one as it was with Fo3/NV/Skyrim. Yes pain sounds will be muted too as all other NPCs will be. But as the original poster wrote: "Voice acting is supposed to happen in your imagination.". So he gets his wish fullfilled fully.

ok... respect that view but:

  • I think it voice is a huge improvement.
  • Modding would be impractical.
  • It is - and still is an RPG.
  • The good reason for text boxes was the same that green screen monitors was green, technology has moved on.
  • There are mod tools coming but for this change I feel the effort would be wholly unnecessary.
  • Voice acting is not 'supposed' to happen in your imagination any more than the moon is 'supposed' to be made of cheese.
