What age should NPCs be considered advlts?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 3:51 pm

How old does someone have to be until they are not considered a "kid" anymore by Bethesda and thus stop being invincible? In FO3, there was a contradiction with a character from Little Lamplight named Sticky. It states one place that he was 18, and another place that he was 16. What age should advlthood start? I would say 16 is an advlt in the Fallout world.

And I'm not putting any age below 14 to keep the poll realistic.

Well looks like 18 is the advlt age, so should 17 year olds be much shorter so we don't mistaken them for advlts before we know they're unkillable?

Doesn't matter what the "age" is, what matters is if the character uses the "little kid" model. They're not going to let people kill things that look like little kids, whether they're labeled in-game as "6", "15", "400 year old time-traveling vampire clone", or "immortal android replica".

(I also seriously doubt they're going to have multiple levels of body models, along with making all the armor & clothes models to fit them. 99% chance we're going to have "advlt" and "little kid".)

IMO all and everything should be killable, kids and advlts alike. However, killing kids should have severe repercussions in communities, making them hostile towards you. Word should also spread, which would make 90% of all cities hostile against you eventually. This would go along with the whole role playing thing if you want to be a murdering [censored].

I think all publishers dislike the idea of killable children in games. This would be very negative PR because 99% of media is always such a bunch of sensitive hypocrites. Most people understand that things portrayed in games are fictional and that we don't carry the actions over to real life. Almost all action games involved killing or destruction, but we don't go out and kill and destroy because of it. Equally we wouldn't go out and murder children all the sudden. I mainly think it's just a very silly PR thing. Just look at the media coverage on GTA5 around strip clubs. They were not concerned about all the murdering, but they had problem with [censored] and touching the strippers. Imagine the hilarious [censored]storm if you could kill kids.

Short answer; Legally a person is an advlt at 18 in most countries, but how the world works is that age doesn't seem to add to either ethics or morals, but looks does. This means that if a character looks young enough to be a kid, they most likely will be considered a kid and hence be 'unkillable'.

16 is the minimum age for fighting in a real war so it stands to reason that that is the true number. Also it's the age of consent. Unless characters can legitimately age as others have mentioned age is pretty irrelevant as the models are universally either a kid or a full grown advlt.

In a setting where modern civilization is no longer an option and just getting to the age of 20 is an accomplishment in and of itself, the age of advlthood needs to be considered lower.

However...

In Fallout 2, killing Myron, who is at most in his mid-teens, nets you a Childkiller marker (because the game doesn't just call you a childkiller for killing one kid; you might have missed your intended target). So, there is still the remnant sensation that advlthood is still not quite achieved until late teens (17-18).

Where i am from it is actually two-fold. 16 is the first real step into advlthood, while 18 is the last step. So i will vote 18 here.

Yep. Sally in MZ was two hundred years old, but she's still a kid.

What qualifies as an advlt in the Fallout world is irrelevant. Bethesda's protection of children is based on real-world norms. If a character has the appearance of a child, or even if a character might possibly be a child, Bethesda will treat it as such.

I'm going with the slasher flick standard.

If you are old enough to have six (and do and are stupid enough to go off alone), you are old enough to be murdered in a very gruesome fashion for my entertainment.

Just joking, I'm not entertained by slasher flicks, but still stand behind my statement. ;)

advlt in America is 18 or 21.

Can't even gamble or drink in the United States before 21; however, I think we're legally considered advlts at 18.

Post fallout world is harsh Place. You need to grow up fast. Also americans get cars on 16. Wich is quite a big deal for a mere teen. Lot of responsibility for a young fellow. We give mopeds our teenagers (50cc max).

You said in America, so I was just giving the correct age of majority in the United States. Outside of driving we can't do anything in the United States until 18. Our parents decide pretty much everything, we can't live on our own (I think), can't smoke, can't be tried as an advlt in court, etc.

16. I'd imagine that kids have to mature a lot quicker in the wasteland. At least, mentally.

Sticky was a special case. Everyone in Bigtown said they had to leave at 16 but Sticky stayed until 18.
Also, he wasn't killable until you got to Bigtown. I tried firing a gun inside Lamplight but it hit no one.

16 for Little Lamplight

Some people mature faster than others. Sticky did not mature fast.

I'd say anywhere between 16-20

16 like Fallouts 1-2. I doubt we'll see anybody look less then 18 unless it's kids which we have no confirmation on that being in Fallout 4 yet and I don't want to get into that debate on this forums, for obvious reasons. :D

Shocked this topic hasn't been locked yet since this is a touchy topic here. The use of the old fallout baby killer avatar on these boards is prohibited.

OK, what fun is it if we can't kill whiny teenagers.

Better a few virtual teenagers die so that flesh and blood teenagers live.... Some may disagree.

Personally I'm glad that Fallout 4 is for a mature audience, but since I have children at home, I also don't mind some restrictions like not being able to kill kids.

Bad enough when my nine year old walked in while I was dealing with the Blotchling in Witcher 3.

There will be more than enough mods for those things that certain players have to have (and more power to them) and it leaves Bethesda free to make the best game they can.

In Great Britain, advlt age is 16 I believe? I was using that model.

And what about midget characters?
