Nope, but neither do Mirelurk Kings look anything like either Mirelurks or Crabs.

EDIT: I stand corrected, they are in fact heavily modified Jackson's chamelions. Whatever one of those is.

I've been racking my brain for the answer too.

If you take a close look at Deathclaw's, you'll notice they have horns, a large protruding underbite/jaw, and long arms and legs. No living creature fits that description, my guess is that its a genetically engineered creature, who made the damn things in the first place I'll never know. Maybe some veteran Fallout characters can shed some light.

Oh hey, after reading Attenater's post that makes a lot of sense (what it says on the wiki page)

It says that some Deathclaw's who were given the FEV ended up having the intelligence and speech capabilities of an 8 year old. Wouldn't it be awesome that if in Broken Steel we got a semi-intelligent Deathclaw companion, but make him sound kind of stupid. Like a scary as hell little kid following you around, that'd be awesome.

Deathclaws are genetically engineered creatures. They were meant to be "Super Soldiers" that would replace humans in the war.

I always figured them to be radiation mutated lizards like Godzilla. I didnt know they were meant to be super soldiers. Thats pretty cool and opens a wonderful can of worms for other monster types in future DLCs and Expansions etc.

Looking at Fallout's history and the Fallout Wiki they seem pretty unexplained, I guess it adds to their creepyness. E.g:

Mirelurk runs at you: 'AAARGH! A giant mutated crab!'

Deathclaw runs at you: 'AAARGH! A giant... a... OMG! WTF IS IT!?'

EDIT: Well, looking at the Wiki it seems the above posters are pretty much all right, they're genetically engineered Jackson's chameleons who were intended as Super Soldiers to replace humans in close combat missions during the Great War.

DeathClaws are (as was mentioned) derived from http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj125/Gizmojunk/040.jpgDNA. (and I really expected them to have 'Active Camouflage' like in Halo ~or passive camouflage).

I really don't see the resemblance to the Jackson Chameleon aside from the horns. Given that anybody can write/edit a wiki site, I would need a more concrete (e.g. from the developer) explanation before I believed any one argument.

Maybe a bear, a wolverine, and a rhyno all got it on in a pool of atomic sludge. *shrug*

Many deathclaws were intelligent and wanted no harm for humans.

If you read it more closely, you'd notice that the wiki has references to specific in-game dialogue, namely:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Ocjoseph.msg

{146}{}{Well, let's see... Deathclaws appear to be mutated Jackson's Chameleons, the horned variety.
There are a lot of similarities still present, but an even greater number of differences. The mutation
factor is quite high. This species is highly intelligent, about the equivalent of an eight-year-old,
with some individuals reaching human normal level. Their learning capacity is very high and they are
capable of abstract thought and reasoning.}

(He's speaking about the ones further mutated by the Enclave).

Information about them being genetically engineered and not a natural mutation comes from the official Fallout 2 guide, written by Matt Norton, the lead designer of FO2.

Even some used to protect humans for shelter in return.

Not questioning the deathclwaw?s intelligence. I?m talking about the people who made them.
I mean, could the screw up be any worse? They let loose hundreds of hostile and extremely dangerous beasts into the world!
Dont the people have enough trouble as it is? :shakehead:
