What are the Angels?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 3:48 am

The 7th Song of Pelinal compares Umaril the Unfeathered's face to that of an angel's. The 36 Lessons of Vivec mention Angels twice, in Sermon 25 (referring to Saint Veloth) and 35. The Second Volume of the Mythic Dawn Commentaries mention angels who loved "Maztiak". The book "Saints and Seducers" mentions that the name of the Golden Saints would make one think of an angelic being. All these references to me suggest that angels are a part of Tamriellic mythology. But what exactly are angels in the Elder Scrolls universe?

The closest thing I know of are the Jills, which are special dragons that fix Dragon Breaks. But I've never actually heard of angels. It's always possible that such beings exist in some corners of Oblivion or Aetherius that mortals have rarely, if ever, ventured, but if as far as I've known I've never heard of anything like it.

Exactly what they are around here, attendants. It's just a word to describe a relation, nothing more.

Well, bottle of Skooma and Golden Saint.

Who knows what creatures are in Oblivion and Aetherius, perhaps some angelic beings are servants of Aedra or Princes.
But I am against using word angel to name some being in Tes lore simply because name doesn't fit at all in such setting.

The same can be said about gods, demons, heaven and earth. But rather then throwing out half the English language it's easier to throw out all preconceived notions. What would be bad would be actual bloody babies with wings and diaper showing up.

Etymologically, angel just means "messenger". In the bible it was used not only for supernatural "angels of God", but of human prophets, and even ordinary secular couriers.

How about quadrilaterally symmetrical man-beasts, or flaming wheels-within-wheels?

Interestingly enough, some consider the Seraphim, whose name means "the burning ones", to be quasi-reptilian, the "burning" in this case being the "burning sensation" of their venom.

So really I don't think calling Jills Angels is really all that far off.

Well, that's better than them being on fire, or glowing bright with disintegrating god rays.

Etymologically speaking an Angel is the same as an Angle. The Ang of Aleph and the Lamed or the EL as it would sound (God of the Bible). All named Angels (angles) in the Bible end in EL being of EL.
How about quadrilaterally symmetrical man-beasts, or flaming wheels-within-wheels?

The Quadrilaterally symmetrical man-beast is the 4 points of the Zodiac(The Angles of the wheel.....see Angles not Angels).....the flaming wheel within a wheel would be a Tesseract. The wheel within a wheel the microcosm and the macrocosm.....as above so below.

The Magi has spoken....

They could be immortal souls in mortal bodys. If angels exist in TES universe, they would probaly be body guards. Not soldiers like dremora and other Deadric Prince servants. I would considere them as worst than a lesser Aedra. Something like the maiar of Lord of Rings.

Tyrael from Diablo disagree. He is a good concept of how a angel should be in tes universe. And he is not strong as a Deadric prince or a higher Aedra.

Something like angels in TES universe would be better if they could choose their form as Deadric Prince, or at least be diferrent from each other.

I don't even know what disintegrating god rays are, but it sounds incredible.

The Mnemoli always reminded me of angels, coming down from the heavens when gods walk Nirn.
