What Are the Elder Scrolls?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 6:22 pm

Someone get me an Elder Scroll! I'm making the dunmer back into chimer. :drag:

Sorry, it was a very specific use. The curse was specifically that no one would remember the name of any mortal who wore the cowl. The Elder Scrolls can show any piece of information. Because the Scroll was more powerful than Nocturnal, the names are remembered as long as the cowl is not actually being worn. You can't change history with them, just view it without the bias of the historian, as we saw in Skyrim.

I'm bad at identifying that even in spoken word, let alone written. So as a rule I assume everyone else is also serious every time they speak unless otherwise stated.

In the words of Paarthurnax: "It is an... artifact from outside time. It does not exist, but it has always existed. Rah wahlaan. They are... hmm... fragments of creation." They are pieces of creatia, and possibly intrinsic to Aka's being.

It should also be noted that the prophetic ability of the Scrolls is only a small fraction of their power..

These, and there's the out of game explaination, in that the elder scrolls is the physical game you're playing.
Each scroll tells of an event (each game) that can occur, depending on the perspective the viewer look at it (the player). Usually, it tell of a hero (the PC) who will do stuff (how you play).

And just like how everyone plays the game different, so do the elder scrolls read from a different event.

In simplistic terms, the Elder Scrolls contain all knowledge on what was, what might have bee, what is, what will be, and what could be. As for what they are made of, I'm pretty sure that no one knows. It has never been explained. There are, however, several theories(I think), which I shall leave for someone else to explain.

Edit: there is already a thread on this down below.

I always assumed they came from Anu as the idea of an Elder Scroll is that it holds the knowledge of a certain point in time and because of the Elder Scroll that point in time is forever static, there is no divergence from what will happen.

So therefore the prophecies are Anu's way of inflicting stasis on time.

I think they are fragments of the Godhead's mind, giving people in each kalpa to know the secrets of the ES universe.

Trans-Kalpic creatia in the form of pages from Magnus' drafting board that were left behind when he leapt off into the aetherus.

M'aiq keeps track of many things in his diary, yes. Perhaps he will show them to you. Probably not.

That means that Hermaeus Mora is a crumpled up pile of paper thrown into the rubbish bin that became Apocrypha.

Borge's Library of Babel.

(Thanks, love!)

[edit] UESP is not quite right: the Scrolls aren't Aedric. We don't quite know what they are, though they are said to predate the gods, iirc. Check out the books in http://imperial-library.info/category/tags/elder-scroll for more information.

If'n you're going along those lines I'd say the Aleph is closer to the truth. His name was Borges, btw */nitpicking

An Aleph/Zahir combination I'd say. Whilst the Elder Scrolls does reveal all, it also blinds, and traps the reader into prophecy and paradox. Moth Priests spend the rest of their bound to thier readings and revelations.

The Elder Scrolls are scrolls. That are old. Hence the name.

In reality are the after-name for the Arena designed by Bethesda. Kirkbride is lying to all of us.

The elder scrolls are fragments of creation left behind by the gods. They contain all possible pasts and futures. They are so complicated that reading them usually causes the reader to go blind and possibly mad.

So, they're the Necronomicon? In all seriousness, I assumed that they were "windows into the fabric of Aurbis".

That's basically the explanation given in Skyrim by the Orc in the Mage's college library.
