What are THE mods to play Morrowind with?

Post » Wed Nov 30, 2011 6:37 am

OK, so after reading some of the complaints about Skyrim I've decided to postpone purchasing it until 1) Mods are released to address a lot of the issues; 2) it reduces in price. Sorry, but the straw which broke the camels back was the unique items leveling with the players :nope: - what's the point in exploring at all if this is the case?

Anyhoo, to keep me ticking in the meantime I've decided to re-install Morrowind and play through that again, however previously I've only played vanilla versions of the game, so can those of you in the know recommend which mids I should download for it? (also where to get them from if poss :) )

I want it to be as stable as possible, so am looking for mods that work together and make a significant difference, not just farty little things.

Cheers all!!!

Well, I've never run it, but I've heard great things about: Morrowind Overhaul. http://morrowindoverhaul.net/blog/

One download, tons of mods tested for compatibility and awesomeness. Includes all critical patches, graphics extender, texture packs, all kinds of goodies, etc. Gets the head-nod from a lot of folks around here.

Tamriel Rebuilt (http://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org/) is pretty awesome and very high quality.

Also, I recommend the Morrowind Code Patch and the Unofficial Morrowind Patch for stability, quest fixes, etc. I'm not sure if Morrowind Overhaul includes them or not.

Sigh - I know that feeling - have Skyrim on PS3 where it has multiple issues including skippy framerate but is playable - and my PC copy for modding which is not playable especially since the stealthy Steam update which seems to try and prevent it from being modded - very irritating

Don't sneer at the little things sometimes they can make the biggest difference - if you have the GOTY edition then a little mod like my http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8471 can make a game immersion difference

You didn't say what sort of mods you were looking for - quests, weapons, clothes, buildings, dialogue - if you say what sort of things you like then it is easier to offer suggestions :)

Again, thanks all for the info, I'm a bit of a technophone and wet behind the ears when it comes to these things so much appriciated.

Yeah, I've decided I'll be playing Skyrim on 360 most likely so am just going to wait until a GOTY edition with all the patches and fixes applied is released - really hope they make certain items non-scaleable, it really kills any desire I have to expore knowing that if I complete tasks at an early level the rewards will be locked at a low level too.

Love the idea behind the rumour mod! Looking forward to giving it a try tonight! Wasn't there also a mod which trimmed the the text which you repeatedly find NPCs saying? One which meant there was less BS to wade through? That's the main mod I'm looking for, and one's (such as the rumour one) which add a bit more spice to the RPG aspect of the game. I find Morrowind's world amaizing so quests, weapons, clothes etc. don't really make much difference to me (although the odd new weapon or armour may be cool).

Really just looking for stuff that adds that little extra spice without destabalizing or butchering the game.

The Morrowind Patch Project (MPP) essentially replaces the old Unofficial Patch, and the more recent Morrowind Code Patch (MCP) corrects numerous problems which were unfixable through conventional Construction Set techniques. Those are the "essentials".

The graphics "should haves" are:

( 1 ) a "base" graphics replacer, such as the venerable old Visual Packs or one of the newer and higher resolution collections

( 2 ) a body replacer, for which Better Bodies (by Kahlazzo Studios (sp?)) is the defacto standard, and there are a few higher resolution texture mods that work on top of it

( 3 ) Morrowind Graphics Extender (MGE), which also generates "distant land" to push back the oppressive fog. I set the fog to around 1 min and 6 max, which blurs out the really far objects gently so it doesn't look like a cheezy Model RR layout from the hilltops, but still gives you a nice scenic view.

( 4 ) specific replacers for whatever details you feel need a little more "attention" than the more basic overall replacer offers. This includes little treasures like Ghostnull's "Reflective Silverware" and the spectacular cliffracer texture replacer by the elusive Connary, if you can still find any of his work.

Gameplay changers (for which I recommend playing the game without them at least once before deciding what you do and don't want to add) include the following, as well as many others:

Levelling mods - either GCD or MADD Leveler allow you to just "play" and have your character improve through doing, without having to count "multipliers". GCD is a bit more polished, but tougher on a multi-role character, while MADD still retains the traditional level-up screen and allows you to manually place a single point into 3 Attributes, although the rest of your increases happen as you play, as with GCD. I prefer MADD for a "hybrid" character like a Battlemage, Combat Archer, or Spellsword, and GCD for a straight Fighter, Mage, or Thief.

Crafting mods - the two contenders are Morrowind Crafting and Complete Morrowind Full. The former is far more polished, but a lot slower and more difficult to advance in (my Level 15 character could finally begin to smith his own basic leather armor without constant failure); the second is very "spoilerish" in several respects (make your own high-level items worth a fortune at Level 1), with a few "bugs" that aren't necessarily game-breaking, but obviously wrong (like smelting a weapon down into more material than it took to make it, or breaking your mining pick about 20% of the time at low skill, with only a handful of replacements available anywhere in the game). MC doesn't allow you to cut your own wood, you have to buy it or find it in loot; CMF allows you to defoliate the entire island, and it won't grow back. CMF failures cause injury to the character, which is annoying when you stab yourself to death while sewing (Duh!). MC failures destroy the materials you are using. Aside from the noted "eccentricities", MC is a very polished and thorough system if you don't mind "working at it"; CMF feels a lot more haphazard and only covers scattered items in each category, better for "casual" crafting.

The Less Generic NPC Project (LGNPC) adds conversational topics, unique dialog, and several quests to the game, and includes seperate mods for each of the major settlements or areas. These are highly recommended if you're into the "interaction" aspect of the game.

Tamriel Rebuilt is gradually creating the entire Morrowind mainland, and two of the eventual 6-or-so sections are available as very playable betas (the first section has most of the side quests included, the second has NPCs and creatures, but no quests, a third section is close to release and hoped for in the not-too-distant future). You'll need the Morrowind Code Patch to expand the world map in order to find your way around.

I won't get into the combat and magic overhauls; someone else can give you better info.

Couple of mods that I like to use for role playing purposes are;

As I put before LGNPC (lots of little tasks and backstory for npcs)
Morrowind Come's alive. More for the companion selection.
As before Morrowind Crafting. Handy for if you want to have a reason for taking your time and improving mercentile and speechcraft. A good motivation for travel also. You can make a lot of different things.
Romance mod. Gain (and possibly loose) a partner, have kids that need to be taken care of, prostiture yourself. Add's some well handled and not tackily done features that are good for rp options.
Stormrider. A boat, well more a small ship you have control over. Goes well with Morrowind Crafting for transporting goods for sale. Nice for travelling also.
Abot's Silt Striders, Boats, Gondoliers. All great for adding imersion while travelling.
Regionally Known Criminals. Great for adding some much needed sensibility to the way crime is handled. Based on regional as opposed to island wide notoriety.
Ashlander Tent. Portable home, handy and good for rp.
Children of Morrowind. Add's a lot of atmosphere. Particular favourite is the girl saying. "I went to the temple to pray but forgot what to say so I just stood there and went naaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrr".
Living Cities of Vvardenfell. Put's people and buildings on schedules. Great for atmosphere and believability. Makes being a thief far more interesting also.

The trouble with this request is that, as is, the game is extremely unstable and butchered like a fat cow in a meat processing plant.

It helps if you think of mods not as things to *add* to the game, but rather as things to *fix* the game.

Return to III - Morrowind
