What are these?

Post » Mon Sep 06, 2010 2:38 am

I stumbled upon MK's homepage, and as I browsed through the concept art, these three caught my eye:

http://crimegorilla.8m.com/index/2dff.htm
http://crimegorilla.8m.com/index/2dEE.htm
http://crimegorilla.8m.com/index/2dGG.htm

I can only guess that these Might be Argonian/Sload concept art, but I'm not so sure. Heck, they might not even be from TES! Either way, Does anyone have any idea of what these might be? Here's a link to MK's homepage for those curious:

It says on that page that the black and white images are illustrations for Tekumel, not Morrowind ;)

Those look like some types of argonians (notice one has minerature wings.) Maybe the startup of the Eye of Argonia.

No, they have nothing to do with TES. It's been said by Keltaria already, they are for http://www.tekumel.com/index.html.

Lol. I remember when I finally got my hands on the physical copy of the 1st Edition PGE, and how stoked I was to see it covered in MK-style artwork. The pic of the bald bearded noble in Wayrest on page 20 is perhaps my favorite.

Wait, what? I've never seen that picture before! Yeah, I've looked at the concept art on UESP and TIL, but I didn't really read anywhere (to be fair, I wasn't looking) about who the artists where. I know Mark Jones is one artist, but I was unaware of MK's presence, too.

Who did the Bloodmoon concept art? http://www.imperial-library.info/gallery/bm_armor03.jpg. [/art critic]

The Ald'ruhn artwork is not MK's. It belongs to another member who has not been present in a number of years, and we're not going there.

Haha, looks like he did this on the back of some technical doc thing... something about a body tracking API. Mocap or something? MK's concept art is really good, it's a shame they couldn't get all the detail in at that time (stuff like http://www.uesp.net/image.shtml?morrow/preview/indoril.jpg) but they definitely captured the feel. Did he do any art for Oblivion or was that someone else?

And that Bloodmoon concept art is... uh... well, I've seen better pictures on DeviantArt.

Exactly. That sketch has MK written all over it in terms of artistic style, let alone that it accompanies his "Fall of Ald'ruhn."
Hence my confusion at "The Ald'ruhn artwork is not MK's."

MK did the sketch that accompanies the text on the Imperial Library.

Then Lutemoth applied some photoshop magic to colour it. The coloured version can be found http://red-aardvark.deviantart.com/art/The-Fall-of-Ald-ruhn-67081427. I can imagine this causes some confusion.

Indeed. The black and white sketch was MK's. I even remember him telling us about his sudden inspiration for the story/sketch and how he grabbed the first sheet of paper available, which obviously had writing on one side of it.

Lutemoth colored it in later, and that version of it is fantastic as well. MK himself praised it.

Aren't those sketches on the races pages at the Imperial Library MK's work as well? Not the ones from the Oblivion manual, but the pen outline drawings on the right hand sides of the page?

Like http://www.imperial-library.info/races/mw_highelf.gif? Yeah, they're from the PGE1 and therefore are MK's.

Oh, please don't go to that website. Please. It's older than the creation of Coca-Cola. My real website is at [NUMINIT].

As for Tekumel, Google it along with the name Peter Gifford. (Hey, Peter!) That will take you to the proper site for that particular artwork in better context.

I still cherish being given a name by Professor Barker in the language of the Petal Throne. Send him all your money; what you cannot spare, send to me. If you can afford neither, damn yourself and then, at the very least, look up his work and marvel at its world-building, whose concentration on non-white cultures puts most post-Dunsany fantasists to shame with their airport-safe Anglo-tropes.

And, finally, shame on you for not understanding my full glory regarding Tamriel. Why, the very first glimpse of the buglands of the demons of the East as you know them now was an online sketch produced by my left hand on a bus, as my right was too busy steering that vehicle, whose driver had passed out from a dose of ether that I really had no business owning, much less using on the heroes of mass transit-- a practice I was quite inexplicably obsessed with doing in those days.
