What are these weird lines in the sky?

Post » Sun May 20, 2012 2:02 am

I walked into Whiterun this evening at around 8pm and noticed there are some crazy lines going up and down in the sky. I've taken a screenshot of then so you can all see, they move up and down slowly and cross over eachother. What could be causing this? I am running the game on Ultra graphics settings on the PC with out any performance issues at all, and I've not noticed this before now.

It took me a while to see what you were talking about.

Honestly if something that hard to see is bothering you, the problem is not with the game its you. OCD much?

No... you can't see them as well in the picture because they're not moving, but you can see them in the sky if you look closely.

I get them all the time. Apparently the ENB patch fixes the buggers but that replaces the d3d9.dll from the FXAA Injector, which I see that you use. So it's a toss up between http://enbdev.com/download_en.htm or FXAA.

I am actually using FXAA I think.

They are bad seams caused by the various "brightnesses" in the sky - if you look up into a clear starry night they are very visible, but if you look up at a clear starry night at dawn/dusk, when the brightness in the sky is changing quickly, you can see these lines moving across the sky very quickly.

They form a "dome" of ever-smaller concentric circles (though they are not really circles, they are like large shapes with perhaps 20 sides) extending up to the tip of the sky-dome above you.

I've tried to take two screenshots of this myself showing the lines with hopefully better effect, but tbh these are most visible in-game rather than in screens - just take a good look at the night-sky on clear starry nights to see them best.

(nb: I am using FXAA, with AA fully disabled)

I have this exact same problem.

Has anyone got a fix for this yet?

Its almost like one of those "When you see it you will...." There is an improved nights sky mod on nexus. See if that helps.

Actually, it won't go away. That has nothing to do with Skyrim, but the actual color depth of the gradient transition and how monitors display colors. That becomes more apparent during dawn and dusk, when the sky goes from a warm bright color to a cool dark color or the opposite.

You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colour_banding

the fading effect when it is getting dark. Not really bothered by it as long as the game runs smooth (which it does for me on ultra and antialias 4x)

Hmm, I had to stare for countless wasted minutes of lifetime at that picture to finally see the 'problem'.

Other than the posts above my only thought was 'Chee, I bet aurora borealis would drive this guy to murder or something
. Oh , waving lines from hell then.

yah, gradients just say no.

I had to squint really hard and zoom in quite a bit... yes, I suppose it is a case of banding, an incredibly minor one. Maybe it's more obvious in action.
